why are the lone pairs counted as pi electrons? The definition of pi electrons said here are side to side overlapping p-orbitals so doesn't that mean it needs to overlap with another atom's p-orbitals to count as pi electrons?

This is complete gold...I had an Austrian Orgo II teacher whose English was horrible, so not only was there a language barrier but he also photocopied the examples in the book and read of the slides to teach. I wish I had someone like you as my professor.

I have an organic test tomorrow. I've been trying to figure out exactly how to gather the number of pi electrons for a while, and by some miracle, google led me to this video.
