73 dislikes from morons who dont understand time or rhythm and think the drummer sucks ... look at the way he brings the song back in and goes off, that dude is nuts.
Tal rocks, but unfortunately she looks a little like Taylor Swift! The word is out that Simon Cowell wants to take the bass out of her hands and force her to stand on stage and sing songs about puppy love and high school so she can compete with Taylor and Britney!
Oh well, enjoy her bass playing while we still can.....
you don't have to enjoy Tal's style even if you appreciate jazz....it is obvious that she is amazing, but honestly I don't think she produces the sound I personally like to hear from that bass. Even in her beautiful solos with Beck she lacks the punch. Take into account that I am comparing with other pros at her level and no geeks off the street.
@caseyjones67 Isn't she amazing!!?? Yeah, she played with Jeff B at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London in 2007. I believe the gig(s) are available on DVD!
@etabone1 not this metalhead, that's for sure. Thanks for the reminder of prejudice against us, though? I love funk and am looking for a cheap bass before I get too old to learn it. Tal makes me think about that factor quite a lot! Especially since the Jeff Beck gig.
@etabone1 shut up. i love metal, but as i bassist i appreciate nearly all musicans with talent and originality. Tal is amazing, but im the biggest Robert Trujllio fan in the world :P Wooten is my hero, but then again so is Cliff Burton. YOU saying and generalizing that metal heads are close-minded, just shows how close-minded YOU are.
Well I'm a pro muso; IMHO drummer [Chaun Horton?]=killin'.He's just "breakg up" groove but it's still there & in time even if slightly "elastic" in certain spots, still gr8, just preference.Theyre both just PLAYG,its not bad but both very good playing.A beginner nor even intermediate drummer couldnt just pick up sticks & pull this off w/o yrs study, practice, listeng,& playg w/ others.2 the naysayers: just let them PLAY; stop the "shackling / handcuffing:" they both know exactly "where they are."
Insane drumming! Tal has been a major inspiration for the Norwegian band AdLib. We've got a new EP coming. Check out adlib4tet on myspace for the new definition of funk jazz.
they r playing out of pocket... he's still in time 4/4 but he plsys 8th and 16th notes in between. i have a homeboy that plays jazz in the same way...i showed him this vid.
he told me this ,we use 2 play 2gether he on drums me on keys 2 great musicians
jesus, what a drummer, where can i get this timing and feeling for metric modulation ? Unbelievable. One of the crazy and inspiring drum parts i ever hear. Thanks for posting. This clip has made may day. And Tal is actually a great one.
PS. Pretty to read, what a few deaf-and-dumb-typ-of-guys wrote: Come on, go kidding and play a little bit of merry-go-round, but please stop talking when it come to music.
@seelanne I think it is a binary metric .. not very usefull however as it not describe the entire rythm process. For the feeling it is based on the repetition of high tempo hits breaked at very high speed. In fact, i think the only way to get that technique is to listen to it a lot and try to do the same ^^
Boy, she really was MADE for jazz fusion, wasn't she? Her musical sensibilities were just plain created for the style. That's a fabbo drummer, too, who's expertly keeping up with her flights of fantasy on a small kit, still maintaining the style (because it's a bass clinic). Tal in utero!
its incredible the amount of people who think this drummer isn't doing a great job , GO FIX YOUR MUSICAL EARS,cos he's sharper than a sharp thing, and he does so much , with the most basic kit, c'mon everybody , give me a hell yeah
this is what's known as "playing in the pocket". no, it doesn't mean they don't know what they're doing, it basically means they're trying to play odd time signatures while staying in 4/4 time. this drummer is good at it, but i've seen hundreds of amatures do it too. i used to work at guitar center, and every sunday when church would let out, a few black kids who were all brothers would come in and do things on the drums that would blow my mind. Ok shit heads stop ranking on the drummer! First of all this is a live jam. Jam being the most important word its improvised and if you are waiting for him to play parts from a record or a chart the go out and buy a record this is live music in its rawest form! So chill she is getting some of the best bass gigs around right now she wouldn't just play with any dude! They have good chemistry and it sounds great!

KingNutz: Excellent post! The "average listener" idiot thinks unless a drummer is playing with flailing arms on a 15 piece kit(e.g. Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, both excellent drummers), they're not a good drummer. Truth is this drummer is genius. He and Tal compliment each other so well. THESE two are musicians of the highest caliber.
What makes this so impressive is that it's a play on timing. Tal is actually keeping the time and the drummer is following because it's an improv. She keeps changinig the meter and the drummer matches her. She starts to get into some 6/8 type stuff and he matches it and then throws in some syncopated accents but still keeping the original meter. That's what all the pausing is about, you can see the audience gets it.
i dont think the drummer sucks i see this sometimes its like he changes time signature or something (im sure thats not it) gives it an edge. goes great with this bass solo too
He doesnt just suck. He sucks comprehensively. Completely. He has some ideas, but no skill to get there. He even has a few brain farts with his meter, and his dynamics too. You can tell she isn't feelin it at all. He's garage level.
King ~ I agree with all you say..except the word "conversates"! LOL, how about "converses", as in "carrying on a conversation...that's what they're doing. And you're right, it's freakin' awesome.
She was something like 16 or 17 here. Today Tal is mind-blowing, as seen in a 2009 concert movie she did with Jeff Beck. (Search "Jeff Beck and Ronnies.")
Good drummer ,but in my 40yr.+ of playing drums opinion, he does in fact get lost in his mind at times. He tries to go in one direction while Tal goes on a left turn, leaving him to wander. He does keep time within time very good. There is mainly a loss of flow throughout this whole thing. He could be much smoother and still push Tal.
The drummer knows perfectly well what he is going to give Tal, which is a challenge which in turns shapes into interesting and very fun times for all in the room. For those that think this drummer sucks, you are mistaken.
thought about commenting on the drummer but had to sign in just for the REAL MUSICIAN JAZZ drummer who is defending him...your right bout bar lines and all and mastery of this n that....the part this guy is missing is WHERE to do it. his playings main impact is to draw attention to himself, not the whole. if thats what you like dont call it jazz. JAZZ is a four letter word....btw im a guitar player and part time drummer, i just school drummers...Go Tal.
The one thing I have learned about Jazz is that the less I understand of what they are playing, the better they are. You could ask this guy to come back on the "one" a week later and he could. Tal....always excellent.
Uh, drummer can jam--he's responding to her--but he can't keep time. Just as important, if not more so. That's his fucking job. Everything else is secondary. He's all over the place. If he was really working with her, he'd be holding down the /beat/. Listen to this with a metronome. If you can't hear that, try clapping along. Shit..try clapping, period, and keeping time. And if don't think that's important, I can't help you.
@jaronee ... or we could just consider her an artist in her own individual right and not derive nicknames from male predecessors. we need more women like THIS in music. she's dope... the drummer's doing WAAAY too much, btw. it sounds like "insecurity" sometimes... but he's dope too.
Modern bass playing, you use whatever comes to hand - thumb, fingers, even a nice stiff pick, like the Golden Gate mandolin pick, which I use for everything - guitar, bass, even ... wait for it ... mandolin!
using the thumb is becoming more common, it's a good utility finger for the E string, rather than jumping from G string to E, the thumb saves time. Wooten is a good example of a player who utilizes pretty much all of his fingers.
Ok first, for anyone who thinks this drummer sucks, you obviously know nothing about jazz or fusion drumming. This guy has grasped the concept of playing "through the barline" and it sounds good because it conversates with the solo tal is playing. These two are killing this solo!!!! So if you dont think this is great, dont think that you are a real musician. I am a jazz drummer and know personally that most bassists in this era love to be pushed!!
of course the drummer is great but I think he was a bit distracting to Tal's solo. there's a time to show off...there's time's to spice things up and there's a time to simply keep it in the pocket and lay low. But I see your point.
You guys realized they've rehearsed for this and she hired him. He's not doing anything she hasn't asked for or at least isn't ok with, otherwise he wouldn't be there
I'll also agree with the comments about the drummer against those who are saying he "sucks"...wow you know nothing about Jazz or drumming to say that.
k about the drummer if the solo was with a full band yeah he would have to pull back.....But for what tal is doing she wants the drummer to push her and play abstact.....remember as a musician u play what the songwriter/producer WANTS U TO!!!
they're pushing each other. he's giving her stuff to go off of and she's giving it back. no messing up or over compensating...just out and out flowing, call and answer stuff.
the drums and bass are having a conversation. I like playing in the pocket as much as anybody, but by the look on Tal's face, I think she's having a good time, so haters should probably pipe down and learn to play.
Such little lady act like locomotive! Great Loco!

@stratdaddy89 it's spanky doc. he's the man
thetrumpetman29 2 years ago
Most of it's actually landing on tripolet beats or offbeats, he doesn't actually go completely out of time. It's just really syncopated.

ummm a lady Jaco. That should be her stage name. I like that Lady Jaco.

Lady Tal would be better.
SyvetheShairks 2 years ago
@jaronee ... or we could just consider her an artist in her own individual right and not derive nicknames from male predecessors. we need more women like THIS in music. she's dope... the drummer's doing WAAAY too much, btw. it sounds like "insecurity" sometimes... but he's dope too.

Beauty and the beast... and another beast (drummer)
peterkray 2 years ago
She seems to use her thumb a lot to pluck the strings. Is that a common technique?
hhold 2 years ago
Modern bass playing, you use whatever comes to hand - thumb, fingers, even a nice stiff pick, like the Golden Gate mandolin pick, which I use for everything - guitar, bass, even ... wait for it ... mandolin!
EllJayAitch 2 years ago
Actually yes and it is more & more common to use the 4th finger (if thumb is n°1)
passemagique 2 years ago
using the thumb is becoming more common, it's a good utility finger for the E string, rather than jumping from G string to E, the thumb saves time. Wooten is a good example of a player who utilizes pretty much all of his fingers.

Am I the only one who thinks this girl has no groove?
lm99990 2 years ago
Ok first, for anyone who thinks this drummer sucks, you obviously know nothing about jazz or fusion drumming. This guy has grasped the concept of playing "through the barline" and it sounds good because it conversates with the solo tal is playing. These two are killing this solo!!!! So if you dont think this is great, dont think that you are a real musician. I am a jazz drummer and know personally that most bassists in this era love to be pushed!!
KingNutz 2 years ago 77
of course the drummer is great but I think he was a bit distracting to Tal's solo. there's a time to show off...there's time's to spice things up and there's a time to simply keep it in the pocket and lay low. But I see your point.

ok, seriously is she married
Mrbrezovsky89 2 years ago 19
You guys realized they've rehearsed for this and she hired him. He's not doing anything she hasn't asked for or at least isn't ok with, otherwise he wouldn't be there

Besides that it's just awesome!

I'll also agree with the comments about the drummer against those who are saying he "sucks"...wow you know nothing about Jazz or drumming to say that.
smoke117 2 years ago 3
My uncle is a professional Jazz stand up Bass guitarist and Jazz bassist are definitely the best and Tal is very impressive...

whoever says this drummer is doing a bad job is crazy, they're meshing with each other really well

The people saying the drummer has no groove are missing out on so much.
D4athPanda 2 years ago 2
k about the drummer if the solo was with a full band yeah he would have to pull back.....But for what tal is doing she wants the drummer to push her and play abstact.....remember as a musician u play what the songwriter/producer WANTS U TO!!!
phern77 2 years ago
that bass player is insane,, she is awesome
basstastee 2 years ago
they're pushing each other. he's giving her stuff to go off of and she's giving it back. no messing up or over compensating...just out and out flowing, call and answer stuff.

There's nothing wrong with this drumming. You just have to have the musical ears to hear it.
mlcoo17 2 years ago
The problem is not the drums, it's your lack of ear. This is very tight stuff.
mlcoo17 2 years ago
the drums and bass are having a conversation. I like playing in the pocket as much as anybody, but by the look on Tal's face, I think she's having a good time, so haters should probably pipe down and learn to play.
