Intelligent thoughtful songs. I was blessed to be in college when this group came out. We had some great song writers that time. America, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce......I could go on, but my wish is that the young writers of today go back to this kind of melodic, thought provoking music.
@casper1918 They have been, and for well over a decade. Check out the Jayhawks, Gillian Welch, Son Volt, Ben Sollee, The Decemberists, Midlake, , and many others. Radio as we grew up knowing it (I'm 43) was DESTROYED in the 80's and never recovered. The great acts I mentioned get practically zero airplay outside of college radio and the rare exception like KGSR in Austin & similar stations.
I just bought the dvd of this session (Musikladen) by America and I am watching it now. It is awesome and anyone who is watching any of these videos needs to get this!
Dan Peek and even John Lennon really influenced me to try the harmonica and I'm trying my best to learn songs on it especially Beatles songs and Perhaps some America the band songs if I can find a song book of America the band I might learn that harmonica solo in Rainbow Song and Lonely People that would be so cool I'd love to try that
On my first overseas deployment I learned how to play guitar.. a friend started me out on a 12 string.. I STILL have that guitar.. 38 years later. I wanted to learn because of this group.. Loved their music.
What a true loss that they were never able to come together before Dan's passing and play as America. I cannot even imagine just how magical that would have been. It is just such a heartbreak.
I am so glad that I rediscovered America. They are so talented and their music makes my heart smile. I wish I was old enough for Gerry back then. Love them love their talent and love the fact they sound better live than on their recordings. That is true talent.
@sweetied221 Your comment reflects my feelings exactly, about everything! My favorite song by them. I really hope that Gerry and Dewey will continue to tour since I never got to see them. :(
Reminds me of when i used to hear this on the radio inthe 80's. These guys had to have influenced coldplay and many other bands. I could of swore it was a coldplay song as soon as that piano came in and then the vocals.
I hear and read comments, such as here, by those who say in part, "this is so much better than today's music". Are things really that bad now? Maybe they are. And I feel fortunate to have grown up listening to this music. Strange, though; I'd had all their albums for years, but it's only recently that I've come to know "Hat Trick" as one of their finest albums.
Feeling blessed to have these beautiful gems to listen to in these turbulent times. How lucky to be able to tap into this music and be transported to another time and place. Ironically, it is YT that allows this "time travel" to occur - a brilliant mix of cutting edge technology preserving a rich history of musical genius.
This is to all the real people, who still listen to real music, who havnt sold out to the commercailed sht thats being played on radio and television today.
Wow!!!! I had no idea Dan had passed away till I just happened to come by here. He's with his Lord and Savior playing in The Heavenly Choir. You left a great impression here with us, Dan. God bless.
how lovely! beautiful voices harmony and instruments arrangement! i hadn t heard it for almost 40 years...beautiful America, beautiful song...san francisco in the 70s, sigh...
Dan received Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, so yeah, he is FULLY at peace and SO MUCH MORE than that. Dan could NOT be in better hands. God has that same love for each and every person, but no one is saved until he or she
repents from his or her sin and makes Christ the Lord of His life as his or her Savior. God is NOT willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance, 2 Peter.
Just because you forgot something, how does that make you a DA? Everyone forgets things. God loves you man. turn to Christ Jesus in repentance from sin and in faith receive Him as your Lord and Savior. Dan Peek did, see his interview with Ross right here at you tube.
I could not believe that DAN PEEK died this summer. Shocked does not begin to describe how I feel. He was and always will be my favorite singer, songwriter, and multi- instrumentalist in AMERICA. more important, LONELY PEOPLE (a song that I can relate to) and OLD VIRGINIA (from HEARTS) were the best songs that her wrote and sang. What a shame that there were no reunion concerts before his death. He will definitely be missed.
Seems like I hear a little of Neal Young in there somewhere. I guess Neal Young had a lot to do with influencing that southern California music style. America may have been influenced by Neil but they were a great band in their own right.
@GNO89 agreed:)) if only their whre more like this band? Where when.why has all the pepole gone to hip hop three lined shit?where is america? We are so mixed now, what we-going to do question-Great songs Have meaning-heart sothings we can relate to . Thats what makes life love song real. Where are you know what are you teaching yours? Lok in the mirror, ask yourself is this who i am?
@GNO89 I was lucky to see them live back in 1991 when i turned 18 and instantly cried when i heard their songs because I remembered being a kid in the late 70s singing to their songs. Im so sad because I love these guys and i love REAL music and not todays' trash
A great band. Thanks for the memories. Channel 30 , the first independent TV station in Jax, FL used to sign off with this song and showed the lunar landing. Amazing harmony!
Drinking from the same beer bottle. " hey! can I have that beer back please?" said the keyboard to the guitar player. Their modesty only exceeded by their greatness.
@beremj29 ; Don't despair over those whom God uses to bless us and sing to us. They are messengers sent to us from God to remind us that He loves and cares for us. I GOT A E-MAIL FROM DAN JULY 23 AT 11:14 PM.. MUST OF BEEN ONE OF THE LAST E-MAILS HE SENT OUT BECAUSE THE NEXT MORRING HE WAS GONE.. WHAT GERRY ABD DEWEY SAID ON THERE WEB SITE WAS A BUCH OF SHIT.. THERE ALL MOST WAS A REUNION UNTILL THEY CHANGE THERE MIND AND WONT NOT EVEN HAVE LUNCH WITH DAN.. SO EASY NOW FOR THEM TO SAY NICE THINGS... LETS SEE IF DAN NAME IS ON THE WALK OF FAME WITH THEM... DAN TOLD ME THE TRUTH AND ITS SAD... GERRY AND DEWEY SHOULD OF KISS DAN ON THE CHEAK LIKE JUDUS DID
@snowiemann I think Mr. Peek (rest in peace by the side of the Lord) didn't need to be on the walk of the fame. There are things people who love Jesus don't need. As fame. Whatever Mr. Bunell and Mr. Beckley said, it doesn't matter. Mr. Peek made his choice to leave them and follow the Lord, leave the drugs, and alcohol, and follow Jesus' love. He was happy with his choice, and he had a sweet and peaceful dead. Now, he is by the Lord's side. Other stuff doesn't matter. :)
You have no idea how much your music still inspires myself and my family I hope you are still out there reaching out and spreading your love and music! Thank you so much !! Elizabeth:-)
When life passes you by; is it because you gave up? I did; and become a different
person. One lost and the bewildered soul, that also kept that small voice we all hear quite too. You have to try, my friends and fight the feelings of despair. The only option when you give up...is to wait for your death. Anyway, smile even if its a a painted one...somethng will come along to make that smile geniune.
