The problem with onagers is flaming ammo is too inaccurate to do much damage and regular ammo is too weak to do much damage. A regular rock can only knock out like 5 guys, flaming ones can knock out 20 but barely hit.

Eastern Infantry are pretty bad. I playing as Armenia (yay mods!) and they're fodder. I usually use them to bleed the enemy white: take and deal as many casualties as possible before they rout because they WILL rout. If you get blacksmith and temple upgrades they're better because they're cheap and there is a lot in a unit, but the basic units aren't as good as Hillmen, Heavy Spearmen, or Armenian Legionaries. Still, numbers are nice, especially during sieges.

hillmen may have better morale and better attack (could be defense?) but eastern infantry have so many men in each unit it basically cancels each other out. Personally i'd always go for hillmen

Onagers are not a good tactic in regular map battles. Onagers are only good in siege, really. Even if you ARE good at maneuvering them normally, if you have infantry vs infantry, you usually take out the same amount of YOUR infantry as you do the enemies. Some people think they're intimidating, though, so they could be a good intimidation factor... Whatever. You owned by the way.

Please learn to type properly. It's extremely hard to flank with onagers because they're so slow. Just ditch them unless you are besieging or the enemy has tons of infantry.

the strategy is to weaken down the enemy with horse archers then engage them with your infantry. have your infantry hold them for just a moment then sweep your cavalry and hammer and anvil the enemy ive beat the campaign easily with parthia i can massacre roman legionaries using this strategy

Why do people use onagers? They suck, plain and simple. The regular rock attack is very weak and the fire attack is very inaccurate, you just can't win with them! They can do some damage against a heavy infantry army from afar on a hill map. Pretty specific criteria...

artillery is nice when you have 4 of them and have them placed on high ground. nice in high-money games Vs highly upgraded infantry. btw, onagers should at least have 3 bronze chevrons to be accurate. he only could have 1 attack upgrade or 1 chevron. that is way not enough. gg

I take nothing away from POM but the Roman player was terrible. First, why would you take artillery against Parthia? Their strength is cav not heavy inf formations. Money would have been better spent on more inf. and archers. The archers would have hurt his eastern inf. and more roman inf. could have done better against the Cataphracts.

To reply to erevos111, The other player used a VERY basic and VERY risky strategy. He depended on the Onagers to demolish the infantry and cavalry before he could reach the units. Thats were it all fell apart.

What went wrong here for the Romans. I understand the cataphracts had the advantage over the Roman cavalry, but the Roman infantry should have routed the light armored Persian infantry. I would expect that the battle woulf be determined by the cataphracts with the Parthian infantry barely holding the line with heavy casualties
