@JD3s To learn this song, it'll take some time learning the manouche jazz style. I can point you to a good site that will help a lot with this. If you try to dive directly into playing this song, you'll get confused and frustrated.
Read through the site starting at the top, and (only when you're ready), check out the gypsy jazz section (link on the main page). As with anything, learning this style will take much patience, practice and time.
This dude shreds. I wanna learn to shred like this. I have looked at other versions of this on you tube and this guy has it down the best. All the subtle nuances are here. Top notch phrasing. -jeff metal-
@kpgpwi64 shredding means to play fast. you say blind, linear improv, but i say first of all, if you worked your ass off to be able to play that fast than you deserve the right to play THAT fast. and also i doubt the human mind can think of melodies to go with specific chords when you are playing notes in a flurry of that speed. Just because someone is playing fast doesn't mean they arent musically talented. they've obviously put in alot of effort and time.
@detroidxl Agreed. I think phrasing, dynamics and playing somewhat mellifluous (just like the guy in this video) is more important that blazingly fast arpeggios. I think there's a lack of appreciation in here of how hard it is to play Gypsy swing! Fantastic playing.
You've got a good feel,Leigh.Lots of guys in this genre (Django started a whole Genre!!??!) play too much, too hard, etc.Unfortunately for you, you're the real deal.
Great playing. I'm more of a bebopper, but just recently picked up a Gitane John Jorgenson model and was looking for some stuff to learn in this style. I'm really enjoying this!! :-)
@zeQHCF oh no no an acoustic not classic, I know the classic guitar can't support these strings because it doesn't have the truss rod...that'll brake the neck into two pieces!
@san5a89 hmm the neck is not the only problem, although it would be warped by the pull of the strings. The main problem would be the tailpiece and the guitar top, because the string tension of steel strings on a classical guitar would probably tear the bridge off, thus breaking the top of the guitar. Maccaferri Style guitars have a steel tailpiece that compensates the tremendous pull.
@dudewhosaysarrh well okay truss rod+tailpiece will compensate the pull of the steel strings..but I'm talking about the sound: the most of maccaferri sound is from the neck and the top and not certainly from the strings or other things..so an acoustic guitar will not ever sound like a maccaferri
@SexyItaliano20 I made it and the sound is not bad...but there's not a great change.. It's just the acoustic guitar with a bit more bass frequences..just this..
I think most of the sound it's from the cedar top of the Maccaferri and not certainly from the strings or the turtle pick...Materials used in classical guitars add some classical tune to the guitar
@sosippus ...It's called a Maccaferri or Selmer after the original designer and builder, although Selmers haven't been made since about 1950. This is a newer guitar, probably by a boutique luthier. Try wiki under Selmer Guitar.
lol. I love this. In my dreams, this is what plays while Im waiting in the elevator. When it stops and makes that little bong noise, down the marble hall and into the foyer I go for one hell of a gun battle. I need the money that safe full of diamonds will bring. I dont need the elevator to go back down. I brought a rope, some explosives and my old lady is a helicopter pilot.....Baby's dont sleep this well.
@Brucy6666 Nope. lol, I don't don't drink, smoke, or use any drugs. I'm an all natural lunatic with a vivid imagination and a very unhealthy diet of too much television. :)
@mabyenot I'm a freelance writer so I spend lots of time exploring my imagination. I have friends who use LSD and it's not for me. I do enjoy watching them do the most bizarre things they deem necessary at the time. My favorite was watching Dave karoke "I had the time of my life." to a mini our lady of Guadalupe nite lite in his hallway. Great fun! :)
Wonderful playing! I'm having a hard time with the fast run at the beginning, can't tell exactly what notes at 0:17, any help? where from E flat you descend chromatically and into some pentatonic who knows what?
Great pickin' -- By the way, here's a message for all you neophytes, tyros and tenderfeet out there -- There's no TAB for the "second section" -- in fact, there's no second section in this tune -- it's just a 32 bar gypsy swing tune in g minor.
omg really, this dude must be sick.... i would give everything to get this skill on guitar :) django's style reaches the sky in the guitar world .... thanx django =)
Learning tabs might help visualizing motifs, but being able to play this requires a complete understanding on intervallic relations, tensions, dynamics, melodies, rythmic functionality and cadences. And i'm not counting all the technique to play those ideas.
so im downloading this video and putting it on a flash drive so when im cruzing in my 62 meteor this is the first thing im going to hear ... oh and the old mean women next door so all she'll hear is this blasting and me peeling out!!
