Honestly, it depends. How comfortable are you with staying up in the water in general? If you know how to do a breaststroke kick well, this one shouldn't take too long. It's a similar motion, though not quite the same. The most obvious differences are that you're legs are alternating, and that the egg-beater usually uses a more circular motion from the knees and hips, and has the legs more widespread.
i was watching anime and then my browser froze and he said "Hi this is phillip toreyellow this is how to use the eggbeater" then my anime makes a explosion sound and im like WTF?!
I have never seen this type of kick, I have been a swimmer for a number of years and have never seen this kick. Will have to give this one a try when i get in the water next time.
@irishkisses3 I will try this kind of water treading too. So far I have been using the up and down motion of my legs and hands skulling which caused me to get tired quickly. That's why I start to search for other technique which is efficient; now here I find a new thing I have never known before : CIRCULAR MOTION of the legs.
Ya, i never knew how to do that, i didn't learn it the first time i was in water, and I didn't learn it in school either for some reason. Now i finally learned it, thank you! Now i can finally learn to swim!
I've been practicing this technique for the past few weeks now and feel I'm ready to move on to the next step - shaving my entire body. Do you have a vid for that?
Hmm tbh found it much easier to refine my breast stroke into an egg beater :)
i have been swimming competitively on a team since about 2nd grade and i just joined water polo for my highschool last year and i found it much easier to do a one legged breast stroke kick and add a circular motion to it
this shit takes weeks of training if youre just starting out water training...I just started water training for Air Force Pararescue about a month ago and just barely got down the eggbeater. Once you can swim 500m with ease, the eggbeater should be simpler.
i think what he forgot to say, also, is that you have to have your feet in a fixed position. nearly at a 90. vs. what you would be doing in a flutter kick, in a more relaxed position. also, your using the arch of your foot to do the pushing.
Hey, I take Bronze Cross, and I still have problems doing the egg beater. I think it's because of my lazy foot.. it never does the right thing. Even for swimming. Do you think this can be fixed? I mean.. I reallly wanna pass Bronze Cross, it's just that when I do the egg beater, I sink, and i suddenly have my leg s going in all different directions so I stay on the surface.
As a lifesaving society examiner I can tell you that Egg Beater is not a requirement for Bronze Cross. However if you wish to go on to take your lifeguarding courses, you will need to become proficient in eggbeater.
thats strange cuz I actually failed my first bronze cross exam because I couldn't get an egg beater.I got it eventually, but just bearly so now in NLS its getting kind of hard to catch up and everyone is doing so easily! I recommend people get their egg beater completely down in bronze cross actually...
The egg beater kick is the main source of knee pain in synchronized swimming and probably in Water-polo too. The best way to prevent those injuries is to warm-up well before each training by doing Half-Squats for exemple. When you perform the egg beater kick, its also important to rotate your thighs in and out. Doing that movement is still in the hips range of movement and it reduce significantly the stress on your knees.
(I'm a synchronized swimming coach for 10 years and I have an underdegree in kinesiology. One on my main concern in my coaching is to prevent injuries so the athletes can practice their sport all their life.)
I've noticed most people have their right leg move in a counter-clockwise circle while their left moves in a clockwise circle. But is it just as effective to inverse this? In other words, you left goes counter-clock wise and ect. I just find this easier but i don't want to be doing it wrong!
Its normal that one goes clockwise an dthe other counterclockwise because your body is symetric. To do the same movement on the other side, you have to perform it as if you're in front of a mirror in order to use the same muscles.
Doesn't it seem a bit silly to have a guy spend the majority of an instructional swimming video in a pool, but telling you how to practice the maneuver while in a chair? Why not have him do the maneuver... idk, while in a chair? Minute and a half goes by before he even does anything in the pool. It's good advice and a nice vid, but I don't understand the sense in having a guy use his fingers to demonstrate a swimming maneuver that you can practice in a chair. Meanwhile he's in a pool.
Whether or not you recommend practicing in a chair, what does that have to do with my comment? I think you missed my point entirely. Try watching from 0:26 where he recommends we use a chair, then ask yourself why he's replicating leg movements with his arms while in a pool.
nah i had the same question. i went from lacrosse to water polo after having a "career" ending knee surgery my senior year in high school, and the egg beater doesnt bother my knee at all. just be sure to stretch your legs out and start off slow. you'll work up to it. I never thought i'd be great at it, but im training to be a goalie now

Some more tips for the most powerfull egg beater (proven by a UBC student in Human Kinetics):
- Wide knees
- Large knees
- Big circles with your legs (Nearly touch your bum and the surface of the water during your circles)
- Use your feet. (Your ankle is pointed when your foot is at your bum and flexed in front of you.
