I utterly disagree, this is not in the Satie spirits of music, this lacks so much of emotions, ok the fingers are put in the right place at the right moment but please, Gnossiennes are supposed to be more than that, where is passion, desperateness, melancolia or hesitation? It does not sound like coming from a disturbed mind and it misses all the point, to me at least. Far too much in academic style. Put your soul in that music!
@MrLulu33210 I think I have put soul into the music. But you are right, there is more space for expression. I think today my playing has much developed compared to that.
@MrLulu33210 Nonetheless it is still beautifully played. We must remember that when you mention a "disturbed mind", that this will only come from the source of composition. This can be said of any genius. No one can play the simplest melody such as Moonlight Sonata as we may perceive Beethoven played it and no one can sing a Wagner aria as we might conceive Wagner would have wanted it sung (save Flagstad or a few others)...in other words, appreciate the fact that the music is being kept alive
@CarloAchdjian you miss my point, i was not alive at Satie's time obviously but music player such as historian must use what Paul Ricoeur called "good subjectivity" not to try to do such as the author would have done, but to be in the conception of what this music means. It worths only if you want to intreprete the song as it was made for, and i'm not against a reinterpretation, but don't tell me this is an essay to modernize the song, this is much classic, let's play classic then
all the recordings i have of this piece are too fast, this is a perfect tempo, well done, you played it beautifully. I shall take inspiration from this performance as i learn it
for real this is a super job....really great i admire you so much...dont get me wrong but try and put more soul in it...let yourself go with the song....it is a super great job though....congrats....
No, no, no. Too evenly! Use more rubato. Sounds like a machine, no emotions and identity in it at all !! Play it like you feel it, make it your own way, introduce your individual idea. Hitting the notes in the same tempo is below your skills. A computer can do that as well
Beautiful touch and sound. Though I want to comment on the visuals that are to me equally haunting and appropriate. There's something surreally appropriate about the black outline of the player, playing a mirrored piano, reflecting the whole world outside as well as 'inside' in his soul. The visuals stick in my mind as symbolically appropriate for these haunting and minimal tunes.
Thanks! Yes you are right I need a better microphone. Actually I have one and I used it for my newer videos which are mostly recorded between Christmas and New Years Eve. The thing which still bothers me is the noise in the video even with the microphone. That still appears because I connected it with the camera. I bought a sequencer to connect with the microphone and a laptop. Currently I haven't got much time to try that out but my next session in August will be hopefully without any noise.
You play this piece beatifully. Thank you! I have some of your videos on my favorites, yo are great. By the way, where can I get the score for gnossiennes 4-6?
Satie. Very nice. Rather-Impressionist,tho. fairly stark lines in his music, yet uniquely classical & lovely, simple, enchantingly melodic French touch. - Erik Satie. Merci!
the right notes in the right order is always a must. hehehe! But playing them with feeling at the right tempo (that is, without a steady metronome) is very important in my opinion, there's no point in playing Satie if you are going to dance to it.
he sais its beautiful and you play the right tones, exectly like it has to be. you play them in the right order. (i'm sorry, my englisch isn't very good, i'm dutch, you see)
But i agree with olaola4: erik satie can be proud!
außerdem musste ich beim lesen deiner profil-zeilen schmunzeln, in denen du erzählst, wie du unter dem klavier lagst, während deine mutter spielte. das bild ist sehr harmonisch und schön. wie dein spiel. wie eine filmsequenz.
the first time that i heard any of satie's compositions was in chocolat, no. 1. i heard no. 4 tonight and i was enthralled. i'm somewhat of a pianist myself and i know it's hard to get the dynamics just right. you did a great job.
My absolute fave and you play it the best I've ever heard it from a non-professional player.
I've said it before, 'easy' music but hard to catch the right mood. If I remember correctly, Satie says somewhere on his music 'like a whisper' or something to that effect. How do you play a WHISPER... that's what I would like to know.... Well, you certainly come closest as I've ever heard it.
I definitely agree with what has been said here so far. Great performance for the most part, I mostly agree with the timing, but I like for Satie a very short, light touch for the final chord. I feel like you played it a little too hard and held it for way too long. Otherwise, well played.
I'd like to mention one thing for all people who discuss about the tempo. The original´sheet music declares a duration of 3:33 min. I am a little bit faster.
You are a fine pianist. But, this is not the Moonlight. This piece was written by Satie, and there is evidence that he did it while he was alive. I like a faster tempo. This was really the first Blues piece in history, not merely Romantic. The grace notes could suggest melancholy whimsy or sounds of nature. Ciccolini nailed it: ambivalent, mysterious, modern.
You are partly right but in my opinion it is an adventurous assumption to call this piece the first Blues piece. Indeed, he uses some "blue notes" but when you are engaged with his biography, you will se that he was very interested in Hellenic music as well as grogorian music. I agree with you that it has some elements of Blues but I would not use this word in the context of Satie's music. It doesn't do justice to his very own style of music.
Of course, "Blues" did not exist yet. I am familiar with only the biographies available in English. I am sorry we do not agree. You are a fine pianist.
I thought the last chord was just a little too late and too dramatic. (Satie is the master of understatement, not exaggeration) You seemed to miss a note on the way down (left thumb).
Otherwise I thought it was an excellent rendition.
Beautiful interpreting. This stuff give me many memories. It illustrated a radio emission in the end of 70's which had many succes on Europe 1 in France. The tittle is "open the night" with Gonzague St Brice. He is a great writer in France.
My my my are we critical... I've never played this song, but I've heard enough versions to know this one is more than acceptable. :) Agreed, it is a little choppy, but the intensity and speed are right.
When you start, it's a little choppy, make it flow more. When you started with the right hand, it sounded like you were pounding on the keys. Make it loud but don't pound on the keys. You have a good start though! This is my favorite gnossienne.
