  • This album in fact came out in 1971... Shuggie Otis was simply and truly ahead of his time. His last album entitled "Inspiration Information" was in 1974 and there are tracks on it you would not believe are old now, in such wise that even Prince and Lenny Kravitz were making sounds based from that album alone in the 1990s.

Shuggie Otis is a recluse who should have done a lot more albums than he's done. The good news is that he should be releasing a new album for 2012. The man is truly a legend.

  • Shuggie should have been born later cuz he could have toured with the stones, but he had a fear of crowds and declined. this music is so cool it's like an air conditioner blowing out of my speakers!!!!

  • I'm only 22 this song is 17 years b4 my time but wow this is music.... comin from a true hip hop fan

  • Hello, my love I heard a kiss from you Red magic satin playing near, too All through the morning rain I gaze - the sun doesn't shine - Rainbows and waterfalls run through my mind In the garden - I see west Purple shower, bells and tea Orange birds and river cousins dressed in green Pretty music I hear - so happy And loud - blue flower echo From a cherry cloud Feel sunshine sparkle pink and blue Playgrounds will laugh if you try to ask Is it cool?, is it cool? If you arrive and don't see me
  • This version is way sicker than the brothers

  • yet another good reason to just Listen to you tube, and ignore the video's

  • Why the FUNK does Brothers Johnson pop up before Shuggie Otis for this song?!!!!!!

  • Urgh. What's happening to Youtube. Lawson can suck it.

  • makes me proud to be named shugie one g though.

  • Apparently one of the brothers was dating Shuggie Otis' cousin at one time and so they were close. They liked the song and would have obtained his permission before recording their version. They couldn't stolen it from him due to copyright issues and would have credited him album as the songwriter of that particular track. Both parties would have been smiling all the way to the bank as Shuggie would get his royalties too.

  • Hmm I had always thought that the Brothers Johnson was the original....I like this one but I guess I'm preferential to the other

  • And now the instrumental (guitar) part falls into place. This is definitely how it was ment to be! To Brothers Johnson: If you steal a song, do it well and not the way you did...

  • @Hansepans68 Who the hell STOLE a song? They got permission to do it... had a MONSTER hit with it.. and Shuggie got paid. WTF is the problem? By the way, that's not George Johnson doing the guitar solo on the record. It's Lee Ritenour... no guitar slouch himself. I like both versions....

  • @megavega4 and @anto276k Still it's not a reason for brothers johnson to sing this wonderful song, dressed in tight shinny pants to show their ass

see 1:32 ain't they look dumb then ?

This song is a Master piece, One of the heaviest musical monument in history

They got to respect this song and be dressed decently

  • WWOOOOOOWWWWW What a Shame for the brothers johnson, not happy enough to STEAL this song from a great Artist like Shuggie Otis, they showing their ass in tight shiny pants then!

    see on 1:33

    WHAT'S WRONG N'THEM ?

  • Herd this at work. Wrote it down, came home and looked it up, and that's how I'm here now.

  • Damn @ 17? Beautiful.

  • This version is the DEFINITIVE one. Thanks Mr Otis.

  • This song was referenced in a recent of Monreal album. Its great to listen to musicians with good taste in other music that they will lead you to.

  • Psychedelic, man. Makes it feel like you're flying into the sun.

  • i think that whatever an artist puts out is absolutely perfect; if it comes out the way that artist intended it to, then there's nothing that needs to be changed, there will just be people that don't like it, as well as people that like it.

  • This version is OK but a bit plodding and slow. I respect the man for writing such a great song but prefer Bros. J. version.

  • shining star!

  • The whole album is amazing. Heard it at the giant record store in San Francisco (in the Haight I think) and bought it immediately.

  • @nesnejls ilove haight ashbury, they have everything!

  • @aishaxoxobela What?

  • Check out our Chopped & Screwed version of this funk classic!

  • i think i like the brothers johnson version better.

  • I heard this for the first time on XM Deep Tracks yesterday. I consider myself pretty knowledgable about music, but I never heard this before, and it kind of made me feel embarrassed...what a nice tune!!

  • Comment removed

  • do somebody know what song is the last part of this video? i mean, its amazing!

  • I checked out all the sampler songs, and still can't find the links to how they were sampled. Can anyone help out?

  • Hey RAPPERS, Gaga, Kanye, American Idol Wannabees, posers, Rhiana, Beyonce, fifteen hundred back up dancers-THIS IS MUSIC! LISTEN AND LEARN it!!

  • @MrVeesworld Tell em off mane!!!

  • it was also sampled for Tupac - Bad boys

  • kenny!

  • i found this track on a a world wide psychodelic album i down loaded and immediately chose this version over the brother's johnson version, (which too is nice) BUT this is my s**t right here, this version just feels so much more free and flowing, not so robotic...

  • nice video...love the song...there where many more that sampled this song as well

  • Just discovered Shuggie Otis for the first time, and have already bought two albums off Amazon to hear more of his amazing (and all too few) albums. That guitar outro is 20 feet deep, and amazingly inventive for a teenage guitarist. Don't let the production values fool you: this man is a true GENIUS!

  • HOLY FUCK ?!?!?! i was just sitting here with my eyes closes and i opened them and i was floating in my room and i looked down and saw me body and then i like opened my eyes again and i was in my body ?!?!?!? whoa wtf maybe i need more weed!!!!!!

  • isnt this the melody to "crazy in love", by beyonce?

  • @hfanti No - Beyonce sampled the song for another track called "Be With You". This is also on the same album as crazy in love.

  • @hfanti do you mean 'didn't beyoncé rip off the melody for CIL?' ??

  • Missing the FUNK..... Brother Johnson Put the BASS in it hard both nice...

  • only version that matters to me.

  • I'm watching this in 1911 mode

  • Not sure anything was imperfect about the original

  • Shuggie Otis wrote this for a girlfriend who used Strawberry Scented paper when she wrote to him. This is from his 1972 Album " Freedom Flight."

  • Shuggie Otis > Brothers Johnson and everyone else who covered this song.

I love both Shuggie's and the Johnsons' versions by the way.

  • nice, but the Bros. Johnson improved on it - for real...

  • Here because of Adam Buxton - thx!

  • Shuggie Otis sounds like a New Orleans zydeco singer in this version.

  • GROOVY!

  • I wonder if the beautiful poem that this song is, goes overlooked.

  • So, who sampled it?

  • @murcuryvapor Meaning, this version.

  • I prefer the Brothers Johnson's version, but this guy deserves credit for having written a great song. Funny, I'd never heard of him though until I did a little research on the song.

  • so this is the original

  • so glad to have heard the original. the brothers johnson version is funkier no doubt but this is marvelous.

  • Sorry, this cover can't even sit in the same store as the Brothers Johnson, he just did not hit the mark... AND it isnothing personal, my opinion, has nothing to do with Shug

  • @rainspirit100 you're a moron! you r a moron! moron, moron, moron! shuggie otis wrote this song when the brothers johnson were 2 faggots who couldn't get their own hit single.. then they cover shuggie's song and make a shit load of money.. not much talent there. i do admit, the bros johnson version bassline kicks ass.. but nothing beats the original, or shuggie otis, for that matter.

  • Sounds gay compared to the Brothers Johnson version

  • 1st time ever hearing the original OMG!

  • Tevin Campbell as well in 1991 on the album T.E.V.I.N.

  • Hey ..... It's cool to "agree to disagree" everyone is entitled to their opinion.... I like this version too....but love the Brothers Johnson remake... Maybe because it was more my era.. maybe it's the Louis Johnson bassline....whatever.... Just my opinion, it won't hurt anyone.... Peace!!

  • this is honestly freaky . Like something your best friend wrote .

  • uhhh...yeah, a bunch of uneducated listeners here. This is Shuggie Otis, this is the original. He wrote this and played every single instrument on it by himself at the age of 17 so > better than Akon's entire music library put together...period.

  • @bobbychuchio sorry, he did not write this...this came out in 1977 by the Brothers Johnson, and that is not to take away from the talents of Shug, he may have played all the instruments, he just did not write it...

  • @rainspirit100 MY BAD the man wrote this song, i was so so so wrong and i stand/ or sit corrected

  • @rainspirit100 Wow!!!!!....before you get on here and spew your uneducated nonsense, perhaps you should do a little research. Shuggie Otis wrote this song and released it in 1971 (6 years prior to 1977) on his record titled "freedom flight". The Brothers Johnson covered it in 1977 on a record called "right on time". Which by the way, I own and it does indeed say written by Shuggie Otis.

  • @bobbychuchio You are so right about Shuggie.

  • @bobbychuchio great info!!

  • I love freedom and cherry pie

  • @teringkutnaam you`r mentally ill

  • @teringkutnaam You must have got hearing aids.

  • nothing like the original.....

  • @curtisb3000 this IS the original

  • @curtisb3000 cunt

  • @splatch1000

....This is real music! Here is some aspirin for your menstrual cramps and do not forget the heating pad.

  • Comment removed

  • @curtisb3000 so sorry, i think i misread what you were saying. when you said "nothing like the original" i thought you meant this version is not like the original version, even though it is the original. if you meant that nothing is as good as the original (this) then im sorry and completely agree. if not the cunt still applies.

  • Fascinating to hear a nearly all- acoustic treatment of the song (except for the cascading guitar break near the end) by the man who wrote it--totally different treatment than the Brothers Johnson, neither better nor worse, just different. They both did justice to the song in their own way....

  • The phase-shifting and harmonies @ 2:20 is cool.

  • sl23 if u r out ther let me know

  • Now please don"t get me wrong...I like Shuggie. He's a Great blues guitarist. But the Brothers Johnsons version of Strawberry letter is so much better.

  • OK...I'm sorry. I try not to make rude comments in my posts but this version is bad!!! Compared to the Brothers Johnson version, this sounds like a bad Karaoke attempt with a bad sound system and recorded on an old Walkman.

  • @MrSkatelandwest Well lets hear your version since U R talking so much shit....Shuggy proably did this as a demo but obvious U R too stupid 2 realize this...plus the mere fact that this Shuggy's original he got straight paid from the Bros.Johnson and everytime it is played Shuggy gets a check in the mail...WATT about U?

  • @zyruemusic Sorry...I don't have a verison. My post was mainly reguarding dillweeds post saying that this verison was better then The Brothers verison. If I had never heard any verison of 23 then I would proably like it. But can you honestly tell me that you think this verison is better then The Brothers Johnson's verison?

  • @MrSkatelandwest U R a GOOD MAN!!! I can always speak with a humble heart... I believe both versions were GREAT however I believe there was a bigger studio budget which made the Bros. verision slicker sounding...I am sure if the radio would have spun Shuggy's version more the people's ears would have noted the BROS. version 2 B a cover of the original...Y? because people R very fickle when it comes 2 music..maybe because of the slicker engineering? PEACE 2 U Mr.Skateland west

  • @zyruemusic Way back in the mid to late 80's I did the car stereo competiton circuit. Strawberry letter is one of the songs I used in competition to display sound quality. I had a 1986 IROC-Z with a $15,000.00 stereo system it. I got in the habbit of looking for sound quality over content. This is a habbit that is hard to break. The Brothers Johnson's verson is one of the cleanest, clearest tracks in existance. OH...it sounded soooo good!!!

  • @MrSkatelandwest The bass riffs are sweet! Must have sounded great on the $15k system!

  • @kidyubyub Yes it did!!! I had 2, 15” Kicker competitions and 4, 8” Kicker comps with a thing called an “Epicenter” by Audio Control. All driven by 6, Orion amps. The whole system was very tight and very well balanced. When the bass hit it felt like your heart was going to bust out of your chest. Not like todays systems. 2, 15s and 2 tweets with nothing in between. That was a long time ago and I miss it very much.

  • This is better than the brothers johnson version

  • Made a mix tape with Shug on it a long time ago. Actually was introduced by my grandfather. It was known as the hook up mix tape. Let one brother borrow it and from there a legend was born of the "mix tape at O's". It was eventually stolen. Had alot of stuff on it varying in music styles. Wish I could get ahold of that tape again cause it was something about the songs and the order they were in.

  • There's still some gentle people fucking to strawberry letter 23

  • @OEForty yeppers, nothing as "gentle" as getting FUCKED to shuggie Otis's kewl strawberry letter 23 tune, huh, "my friend"? :o)

  • this takes me back...what a beautiful song...and Shuggie is soooo fine!

  • Love the phase-shifting part. Thanks. Wish he'd put more music out with videos.

  • L♥VE THIS SONG :)

  • literally one of the best songs ever recorded

  • honestly Akon is on point 50% of the time, which is 50% more than most NEW artists. I dislike the remake and this song is way better.

  • Quincy and the brothers johnson really took this song to the next level, and this great, no. This is genius, because all the changes and magic are already here, its just that the Johnson brothers an Q, are awesome players, and going by the drum machine i'd assume Shuggie might have played alot of this himself, but yeah this is cold...

  • @kingofdaundaworld Shuggie played ALL of the instruments on it.

  • Can anyone write songs he knows and resembles this kinda psychedelic RnB? I wish shuggie would have done a whole album like this song...

  • And also Das Efx used the sample on Whut goes around

  • What a genius.

  • I gotta say i like this version better cuz the song should end off with that tuff Guitar riff that's playing, not to be just a bridge!!!

  • I want this version, i'm going to the beach and smokin out 2 this!!!

  • this song, even in all of its later covers, is amazing

  • ok this is my story.i had this cd with songs that came out in the 70' s and 80's.

on track 13 i saw strawbeery letter 23 but it was the brothers johnson version.about a month later i searched it up on wikipedia and its said shuggie otis wrote it.so to finf i listed to both vrsions.i found that the brothers johnson version was funkier and the shuggie otis vesrion was oringinal.

  • Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis who is most famous for co-writing the original 1953 version of Hound Dog for Big Mama Thornton. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller rewrote the song in 1955 for a male singer and removed his name off the songwriting credit. Otis also wrote "The Wallflower" for Etta James and "Willie and the Hand Jive" in 1958, "Every Beat of My Heart" which was no. 1 for Gladys Knight and the Pips and which James Brown also recorded. He also wrote "So Fine" for The Fiestas.

  • Gotta give props to the original Shuggie ver, but I always liked The Brothers Johnson version more. Ya'll know Beyonce sampled this right?

  • >_< Those pants @ 1:34 !!!!

  • 2009 me

  • Too bad the Bros. Johnson had a falling out. They were great.

  • Love it!

  • I love this song, it's something to send to my ex-girlfriend.

  • mad song not

  • So, so classic.

  • i love his pants ;)

  • shuggie otis' a bad man

  • love the instrumental last part of this song.

  • the shoes @ .49

  • Pyschedelic music written by a jazz+funk guitarist = Awesome.
