The three lead singers all have terrific, distinctive voices. And they sing three part harmony in a totally fresh style....my personal favorite is Tony Hicks.
@midmodgal It's actually a reddish-salmon colour..I have seen it in person at a Hard Rock Cafe..what a great sound..12 string, but very unlike a Rickenbacker
Thanks so much for posting this. I always wanted to see the Hollies live, especially from England) but never got the chance. This is a good example of how great they were.
@MattWhatsGoinOn Well, Tony's my fave, and I do tend to agree with you about the over-praising of Nash--I mean, I like him and his body of work a lot, I just don't personally find it to be godhead. But let's not belittle Graham's part in the Hollies...in addition to his distinctive and inimitable high harmony, he also contributed wonderful songwriting (though I could do without "Fifi the Flea") and the leadership/spokesman role (a task the other members were happy to leave with him).
I'm a guitarist and this is the first time I ever saw this. Did Tony knock himself out of tune about 3/4 of the way through the song? He shouldn't have played that Vox guitar live. It was an untried, brand new guitar at the time. It looked cool but I think it was discontinued shortly after production.
@tomthefunky: Yeah, I think he knocks his E and his A string out of tune at about 1:40. The only other time I ever saw that guitar played was Tom Petty in his video Refugee. Can other guitar fans think of other guitarists that played one of those? Didn't Dave Wakeling play one?
What a great tune! Hollies were always great singers but this song really shows up the musicianship which is awesome. The guy on the 12 str is great. Drummer is outstanding and the bass is solid. Great band. What show was this?
Thanks peter d for the posting! Loved this since I heard it the first time back in the 60's.
@MattWhatsGoinOn Thanks bro'. Yeah, very good musician. We could fill pages at You Tube with under-rated and under-appreciated musicians and performers. The stuff looks so simple but it's perfect which is always far better than Page style empty pyrotechnics. Hicks did that cool banjo drone thing on Stop, stop, stop and that was brilliant bit too. Damn, the 60's had great music.
@TheGB1950 It's strange how people take up for Nash, who bailed out on the group while the remaining members carried on admirably and had a huge career. And you call Long Cool Woman, The Air That I Breathe and Long Dark Road "hokey"? If you call these hokey, what did you call King Midas In Reverse? HAHA!
@7188181 I guess I felt their material wasn't as good as when Graham Nash was in the band,it's a mater of opinion.I had tickets to see them at the Fillmore East but they canceled last minute and the Turtles replaced them, (a sad day for me) Nash left the group shortly after to join CS&N, that may have been why they canceled.
@7188181 Graham Nash is a genius songwriter, enough to eclipse his mates in the rock history books - he had to go follow his star when the Hollies didn't support him. While they did just fine, I suppose, good on Nashie, who went from strength to strength.
@7188181 I think they're bitter bec the Hollies were so successful with Nash's replacement, Terry Sylvester. In fact, his high harmony singing was more compatible with Allan's voice. Terry's voice wasn't screechy or overpowering of Allan like Nash's could be. Also, Terry was a more skilled guitar player, gorgeous, & HOT!! Oh, I wouldn't call He Ain't Heavy hokey, either. Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe? Definitely!!
@7188181 I screwed up with the whats up with tony hicks guitar, posting it twice, I really wondered what it was,I was informed it's a Vox guitar. I'm not a musician so I haven't a clue> cry out loud.
This piece reminds me of simpler times when most people when this was a civilized, orderly society ((not perfect) and people felt good about their lives and their children's future. Let's hope we can get back there, somehow, for the sake of today's children. THANK YOU HOLLIES! And, Congratulations on your long overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Peace & Love.
@7188181 - Hello. I fully respect your right to express your views. Do you realize, though, that your negative remark demonstrates my point? This society did not used to be drenched in that level of cynicism. I will state my hope that optimism/respect return as OFTEN AS I WISH, whether others acknowledge my right to do so or not. In any event, I hope you find some joy & meaning in your own life. Peace, Love, Bread & Justice for ALL.
Did anyone else catch, at .26 seconds, the man running behind the center screen from the right side? Just trivial, but he must have gone on-stage while they were playing for some reason beacuse there was no one else on-stage at the start of the song.
He was probably a stage hand removing the previous band's equipment. In the 1960s when they used these revolving stages they would often have two bands set up simultaneously-one of either side-and as the next band took stage to perform the previous band's equipment was removed by the stage hands.
@typingnow VERY sharp noticed !!!! Funny these tiny missings .... very curious now WHAT he went for ..... was it a genuine 60-ties terrorist?? VERY rare to find those years ... LOL !!!!
Good question! I always took it for granted that it was Eric, but your question made me look at this more closely (I've a pretty clear copy on DVD) & now I'm not quite so certain...
Of course it's Eric. Bernie didn't officially join until "Bus Stop", although they used Bernie in the promo video for "I Can't Let Go", the single right before "Bus Stop".
Definitely a live version but where are the guitar leads?

@gino066 A Vox Phantom 12 string...sweet. I bet it's orange. I saw a 9 string model recently, a little easier on the fingers.

@RayNDeere Bobby didn't start regularly wearing a hat until 1966 (he's even pictured without it on the first few album sleeves).

@RayNDeere I think the less hair, the more hat.

Can't see their amps, but I think is definitely live, no lipsynch.
This song hit me like a sledgehammer the month I reached puberty.
Interesting how little Graham Nash had to do with their sound. A little high harmony, that's all.

@brianallancobb Graham (Cracker) Nash - terribly over-appreciated musician compared to Tony Hicks. (See above.)

ALLAN as lead singer and TONY on lead guitar.
