  • In God's Kingdom the music will all be this beautiful and magestic.

  • @ManuelBetten Perhaps it will be even better. (:

  • I believe a young Swedish singer wrote a Swedish text to this tune.... He did it as a duet with wonderful Norwegian singer Sissel..... check it by searching for Sissel and Peter Jöback - Gå inte förbi!!!

  • I love modern praise music - but it is also good to hear old hymns as well. This is one of my all time favourites

  • beautiful...

  • Thank you lieness7...this is wonderful.

What a lyric! Such powerful words. God bless everyone.

  • ahh irish styled music.. makes hymns (already beautiful) more beautiful

  • @LeviFangZ I agree! I love hymns and Irish music, and what a combination!!

  • Thank u for sharing the tranquil flowing waters of life in song..effervescent ..devotion..

  • Did anyone else notice the cloud at 0:29 is in the shape of an angel!!

  • Beautiful.

  • I never thought that I would grow to like the tune of this hymn, but I must say, this song is absolutely lovely!!!

  • I love this song so much...what an awesome song to use for prayer and praise to God! Thanks so much for posting and God bless you

  • how can anyone dislike this is beyond me its so beautiful and moving and on the list for my funeral :0)

  • Loving Father....may this be the prayer of my heart always....may my whole being long to be with you here on earth...and there in heaven....be Thou always my vision...I love you Lord

  • So pretty =]

  • Proof of God is proof in you.

  • I thought, here the original medieval hymn, but this is nonsense modern pop, and even in English

  • @deformator100 how is it possible to hear the medieval version.. did day have recording technology? lol the hyme is still the same as it is past down, just hipped up a bit.. listen to other versions of this song you'll realize..

  • @my8villains Actually, the medieval hymn is miles different. go and look at it on wikipedia or something! It is ermmm, interesting!

  • I noticed my favorite verse was missing.

Be Thou my battle-shield, sword for my fight,

Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight.

Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tower.

Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power

The band played this at Leon for the Paws concert as well as a Jewish song.

My friends were upset that I was sitting in the seat sobbing.

  • @XxAdmiralxThowraxX this verse seems to be missing from every version widely sung accept for the original, which, of course, you can google

  • I keep coming back to this. It is my favourite hymn. I love the hauntingly beauty of it. This rendition does it the honour it deserves.

    God's blessings go with you.

  • ahh

  • the singer sings this beautifully

  • this is ancient?

  • @madmiguelh2o

I'd say 8th century is pretty ancient.

  • i know exactly what you both are talking about it. whether i hear it in mass or a baptist church, it has such an effect on me. We Irish have the best hymns!

  • Left out my favorite verse. Too bad that we are afraid to admit that we are in a spiritual battle with God and The Word are our only weapons.

  • Needs verse 3

  • Thank you for putting up a version in 3-4! The one they play at my uni's christian union is always in 4-4 and it sucks as a result, sounds so stilted

  • peterkar

i understand that you don't like the style of the music but it is hardly an abomination!

Rowanda was an abomination, Nazi'ism was an abomination, etc etc.

  • Do you know that when you see the sun streaming through the clouds or the moon dazzling white in the autumn sky God is giving you a gift and yes it is just for you because he sees you looking.

  • You put AMAZING and really beautiful pictures!! Thanks!

  • I love this, upbeat for an RC hymn!

  • I wish the flute intro and simpler accompaniment had continued. Sometimes less is more ;-)

Still my favorite hymn of all time but not my favorite rendition.

  • Not too many songs give me goosebumps every time I listen to it. This one does.

  • The day will come, brothers and sisters, when we will sing this great and wonderous hymn face to face to our Lord and Savior. Never will the universe have heard such a glorious anthemn to our heavenly Father sung by the multitudes of his children. Praise be to God for such incredible music. Our tears of joy will fall like rain.

  • This is my favorite hymn!! If only we could all learn to live out those words...

  • Great song. We need to use the "thou" word more often!

  • This was the processional hymn today in Glasgow as the Pope gave mass! Fantastic.

  • "Thou my best thought by day or by night"

If we would only let him lead us always........

    Lord be our vision.

  • * * * * *

    Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art

Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

    Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;

    I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;

    Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

  • Glorious! This version of the classic hymn blessed my heart!

  • That would be native Irish... tin whistle...

  • This Hymn was written by Mary Elizabeth Byrne (18881-1931) these words have been slightly altered from her original.

  • I love this song, I believe in god. But I would not say that I am a devoted christian. This song brings tears to my eyes.

  • @jazmyrose06 Gods word said only believe.....but try opening your heart and read Gods word daily that you will be renewed Pslam 91 is a great place to start....

  • Hello,

With all due respect to your singing ability you do not do this old hymn justice.

    Have a listen to youtube(dot)com/watch?v=NCGxhzb7JP0

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (July 18), we sang this as our closing hymn. It is #793 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

  • ESTE HIMNO ESTA EN EL HIMNARIO PRESBITERIANO SOLO A DIOS LA GLORIA, EN ESPAÑOL SE LLAMA SE TU MI VISION

  • Praise God for hymns like these! The Irish certainly were good song-writers a millenium back. They're still pretty good now, too! Haha

  • This is beautiful. Thank U so much for posting this one. Its very refreshing!

  • Such a tune can only be conceived in a heart at rest and at peace with God.

  • This is pretty much the coolest old hymn I have ever heard. I kind of want to bust out singing it because it is so inspiring... even though it is currently 1 am.

Maybe I should hold off until morning. Tee hee. :)

Thank you so much for sharing this!

  • St. Patrick what great saint ,may he bless us all .Praise be Jesus for this great hymn

  • Awww what's wrong with the 11 people who do not like this? D:<

  • Really great Hymn my favourite of all time... Thank you Jesus...

  • Love the song. I get how you're part Indian or whatever, but for the love of God keep Ireland Irish.

  • I love 4Him! Good job guys!!

  • Despite what lieness7's notes say, the The original Old Irish text - Rop tú mo Baile - is usually attributed to Dallan Forgaill ... two centuries after Mr. Patrick.

  • Great :D

  • I doubt he was converted in a pagan ireland and believe he became a Christian after his escape and knowing that branch of the Celtic language then returned to Ireland as a missionary.

    Aled

  • Man the way the music sound with the words it brings tears to my eyes!

  • No problems with the nowadays arrangements and instrumentations but the melody itself sounds to me too modern in key and rhythm.

And impossible that in ancient Ireland the language would be English.

You can't sing ancient Roman or let's say Indian music in English.

So the language should have been Gaelic.

  • @schildpadable

Yes, it has a modern sound Someone could write different (& secular) words for it. I could hear in my mind the Irish Rovers using it. Patrick was Welsh. He may have been born in Strathclyde.Oherscholars believe his birth place to be Pembroke,an important place on the route between Ireland & Europe.

  • @schildpadable It's definitely an Irish folk melody (original Old Irish text), however similar to a modern melody it may seem. Actually I don't think it suggests anything modern. It's very folk, there are only six tones in the melody (perhaps a hexatonic scale?) - no e-flat, although it is in b-flat major. Initially the feeling is pentatonic though (first 8 bars) which accounts for the strange charm this hymn has for me. I doubt that most modern-sounding melodies use a hexatonic scale.

  • These are Truely Great Art in display

  • when i get to Heaven, i would like to meet the one who wrote this timeless song...

    Praise Jesus..

  • It's amazing, it's been hundreds and hundreds of years and this song is still alive. It too makes me tear up.

  • Beautiful song. It touches my heart.

  • Bravo!

  • Thanks

  • Maravilloso. Es el cielo en la tierra.

  • Somehow I was able to sing this hymn at my wife's mass of the resurrection. It does have a power all it's own, and I believe St. Patrick played a role in it. My compliments to the musicians... excellent rendition of the hymn... from one musician to another. Sing on and Bless YE!

  • This is one hymn I've never been able to sing to it's end without sobbing. I'm tearing just writing this comment. This hymn has a supernatural ability to touch people's hearts.

  • I am with you on this macpduff. I have loved this hymn since I was a child trying to sing it at school. Cried then, and still do 60 years later.

  • @macpduff I agree my brother, one of the most powerful Spirit led Hymns of all time I would humbly suggest.

Combination of Strong music & awesome words. How can any saved person be not weeping at the end of this song, even many of those who don't know Him yet are moved I'm sure.

  • @macpduff I am in a point in my life where everything is falling apart. I am trying to sing this song right now 11:53 5/26/11. I can't do it with out crying my eyes out... God Bless my good friend :)

  • @macpduff Amen to that!

  • Very nice version

  • very beautiful

  • beautiful! this is a nice video indeed

  • this music takes you into the realms of heaven - truly beautiful

  • This is just so beautiful. I cant find the proper words. Bless you.

  • God is love today and for ever he is love

  • There is something about this hymn that is just beautifully unique. I mean, all hymns are good, worshipping and glorifying God, but this song is just magical. First off,the tuneis energetic, while at the same time breathtaking, which isn't common among energetic tunes,if you know what I mean. Usually the breath-taking tune is this slow, steady and a very focused tune, while this is rampant, powerful,AND ridiculously beautiful. Itjust seems to offer something different thanother hymns,in my opinion

  • Yes kankowski95;

This hymn has a supernatural quality to touch human hearts

  • @Kankowski95 I absolutely agree. It is one of my all time favorite hymns :)

  • @Kankowski95 It has wonderful words but it needs to be sung by an Irish voice

  • @Kankowski95 i totaly agree, it's by far my favorite worship song, i love hearing it & singing it...which i do lots!! it never gets old, unlike some others i know...

  • @Kankowski95

that something is probably the spirit of God

  • @Kankowski95 It's Irish! I don't like the way they jazzed it up. Thumbs down on this one!

  • @magpie4321

The way they jazzed it up still kept it Celtic-sounding! I think it's an absolutely beautiful version that sticks to its roots.

  • irish and spanish musics are the best all over the world!

  • Beautiful hymn.....simply beautiful

  • the best song in the world :-)

  • Over the years we have all been lied to by many false Religous Leaders and so called prophets. Many things we have been taught are not even in Scripture and millions have swallowed so many lies by these false leaders. If you are a truth seeker please visit the web site which is displayed in our user name and take the time to read some of the articles... You will be very shocked.

There is a great audio there for you to listen to. You will come away asking many questions.

    Blessings

    Thanks Ben

  • Beautiful

  • Beautiful photos for a beautiful song! :)

  • I miss the innocence that came with being a new Christian. Passion, poetry, unabashed by those around me. Why does it seem to fade as years go by? This world is just an image covering up Truth. I'd rather be blind to this world and enlightened to the other. God bless.

  • you can recapture all that you knew...just decide to do so...it is all there for you...the joy, the passion, the beauty...remember it, follow it, love it...

    peace.

    rainfalling2

  • @spectersparten Jesus told us who the lord of this world is, right? This world is a counterfeit of the real world God intended. The adversary always imitates what God does in order to capture souls. Don't worry about the apparent loss of your initial enthusiasm. You WILL get it back a thousand fold and it will be eternal. This world is a temporary distraction. God's Kingdom is where we abide eternally and our spirits are there NOW. God is the only reality and we abide in His eternal Spirit.

  • I'm atheist (former Christian) and this is on my playlist

that shows you how awesome it is

  • @JohnRiemannSoong

YOu are always welcome to come back.

  • @JohnRiemannSoong Please come back , God is real. I know life gets hard and we are filled with doubt but I can bare witness of the holy spirit because I was given the spirit and have felt the presence of God. Please don't deny him. Because Jesus loves us and died for us and did rise from the dead and ascend to heaven. I have felt the presence of God and Satan whispers doubts in my ear, don't listen to the lies. Please before it's to late.

  • this song is amazing I love it!

  • where can i download this version? I REALLY like this song! and THIS version!!! :DDD

    thanks :)

  • right on the page it says (well at least in the States) "Download this song: AmazonMP3"

    right under favorite

  • There's another version that is perhaps easier to get :-) It is the recording of Peter Jöback and Sissel Kyrkjebø, the lyrics are in swedish (and some norwegian I believe) but still beautiful! It's called "Gå inte förbi".

  • Check out Ricky Skaggs and the Kentucky Thunder - "I am Ready to Go" to see how Celtic music (more Scots background, but some Irish and English as well) evolved after 250 years in the mountains of America.

But this is great, wonderful mellow devotional music - my favorite. Thanks for posting

  • I love mellow devotional music. This is certainly that. Most of my ancestors spent some time in Ireland - they were lowland Scots pretty much sent by the English. They immigrated to the Appalachian mountains in the 1760s - just in time to do what comes naturally - rebel !!

I will attempt to post a video response from the Kentucky Thunder, so you all have an idea of what Celtic music evolved to in the hills of America.

best wishes for a Merry Christmas

  • Does anyone have the Tin Whistle music for this? or a link to where i can get he music?

    thanks :)

  • will be remain in our heart...

  • Oh! This is so very beautiful! Thank you, Eric, for sending it to me!

Beautiful views, too! Thanks for posting, lieness7 !

  • Lovely version of this song!

  • This is a Great version of MY all time favorite... This song captures all that is within my heart...

  • 1:31 - I live about 25 minutes down the road from where that photo was taken :)

  • its a tin whistle

  • NOOO!

I love 'Be Thou My Vision' so much, but it sounds best (in my opinion) sung simply with an organ and that's it. It should be all about the lyrics and the voices in unity! I cannot bear all these instruments, drums and the sugary style of singing!!

Frankly a massacre of my favourite song :(

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  • in fairness, this is a celtic songs, and thats the message it tries to convey with the music style. I do admit, it could have been done better, but 'massacre' is a bit far, in my opinion.

  • been asked to sing this hymn at my nieces baptism, slightly nerves hope i do it justice its such a beautiful hymn

  • It is true indeed, that God speaks to us in our hearts.

    Beautiful song.

  • love this song so much

  • can anyone please tell me if at the beginning of the song is it a flute piccolo or something???

  • This song makes me cry, because it reminds me of the people and the land I came from.

  • This is a fantastic rendition of a favorite hymn. Not without reason it has lasted 12 centuries.

For another great Irish-style hymn check out Selah's "Before the Throne of God Above."

  • Nice video.

  • Beautiful! Thank you for posting this! :-)

The hymn has the the same simplicity as the ancient song "St. Patrick's Breastplate"--attributed to the great saint himself.

The tin whisle is appropriate, as are the bagpipes. Organs & pianos hadn't been invented when this song was written; nor had accordians (melodians-concertinas). Pipes, recorder-like instruments (whistles) and harps (lyres) were the period pieces. New Age? Old age is more like it! ;-) :-)

  • Thank you so much for posting this song!

    :-)

Your video is very nice too. :-)

  • I don't believe in god.... this song still moves me

  • That's because God still believes in you...

  • 7/8ths Irish Catholic, not particularly religious, but by God this song moves me like no other!

  • 7/8ths Irish, this song stirs something within me like nothing else!

  • Yes, sasmig, I can tell this hymn, like so many other greats, sounds like a hearts cry, a prayer from the heart. Because of this, you can tell there's an anointing of God's Spirit on it [not unlike 'Amazing Grace'] Beautiful, Simple & Touching. The slides are a wonder to behold & makes me wish I could do more traveling, esp to Ireland, the country where my mother's family comes from~ Peace & Blessings To You All~ ~ ~ ~

  • shame it is song sung in english and not old Gaelic...

  • God bless Ireland. We need our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ now more then ever.

I love my country, our heritage, Please Lord Jesus, King of Kings help us overcome the tribulations that are coming.

  • Oh OK=) Then I understand. You should be proud=) They are two great cultures.

  • Well done!!!! Have Irish roots and heavenly citizenship. Singing along with this vid --I can feel my soul "take flight". Wish we could do this in church choir---

  • soul takes flight . Spot on description.

  • My... What a beautiful sounds, I'm not Irish but Honestly I would like it to be

I love that country, there's something on that land...I Can't explain but I Feel so attached, Someday I'll be there.

    Greets from Mexico!

  • I think all of us Catholics feel fondness towards other Catholic countries, or rather, the people there. I'm from Croatia, i like both Mexicans and the Irish. :-)

  • Hmm I love this song but whats with the Native American in the end??

  • Red Armed Panther (Native American) Cheyenne warrior, hunter and scout (also known as Red Sleeve) scouted for General Nelson Miles during the 1877 Nez Perce campaign. He later became an Indian policeman at Lame Deer. This picture taken at Fort Keogh, Montana Territory in 1879 captures the beauty, dignity and self-worth that is so often found in the photographic portraits of the Plains Indians by photographer L. A. Huffman.

  • This is a real prayer to the LORD before my day starts

  • I Love it!!!

  • lovely song :)

  • Yeeech, this version sounds pretty new-age. :-s

  • The Irish whistle is a very traditional instrument and has been around for a very long time (In Ireland, one was found dating back to the 3rd century). Just b/c the Irish whistle has been used more recently in new age music doesn't make it a new age instrument, nor does it make the traditional Christian hymns that use the Irish whistle new age. The Irish people were using the Irish whistle in Christian hymns long before it was used for modern day new age music. This song is NOT new age. :)

  • wow this is a wonderful song. praise God :) haven't heard it before i just found it.

  • Praise the Lord !

Powerful song here. My respects to the irish

    -a mexican

  • Hey lieness! Thank you so very much for this fantastic video. I have a question where did you get the 2 pictures of the angels, one sitting by the water and the other sitting on a rock with a light in her hand. Thank you so much again for this blessing.

  • I can play this whole song on piano!!! I just finished it not too long ago

  • We're playing this song in band :) I never heard it before then, but it is so pretty!

  • Showing Some love from Down Under, All the Best wishes to all, The time is near but so many of us including me are so far, Thanks for adding this song it has certainly opened my heart once more,

  • A sharing :)

There is a video called :

Jesus Christ blood visible in water baptism (on youtube),

thought you might be interested to take a look.

Please also take a look at the info.

    God bless :)

  • A wonderful unexpected gift. TY

  • Wow that was so beautiful, I got teary-eyed...

  • Hard to understand how something as beautiful as this tune could come out of the 700s. It's a lovely counterbalance to that other 8th century religion that hates music as well as a womans face. And yet in the 21 st century we have State sponsered torture just as real as in the year 33. Incomprehensible as 9-11.I 'm not judging just reflecting my world.

  • stevenstreets3 (3 weeks ago) Show Hide -3

You are judging and also being a fool, if you believe the USA is engaging in torture.

  • thanks for posting such lovely hymn.

    regards from Brazil,

    CelinhaFerrarez

  • I also like Glad's accapella version on their first accapella cd.

  • What a superb arrangement - the tin whistle solo is just magical. Pity about the vocals though...

  • This and "In paridisum" I want sung at my funeral

  • Im 13 and quarter irish, i was looking thru irish songs and i came arcoss this i felt as if i knew it i was singin some of the words and i have never heard it in my life lol its weird buti listen 2 this everyday now x

  • Demi, keep it up, you sound like a nice girl

  • I'm half-Irish and felt a connection! Scientifically, some of our ancestor's experiences of the last 200 years get written into our genetic makeup (e.g. children of Holocaust survivors are genetically more anxious people, not just from their parents' impact on their upbringing). People often feel connections with certain types of land, so there is a chance this could explain our connections to this song (due to ancestor's singing it maybe), though it could be false memories (no offense at all).

  • 1. This is not the song that was sung, it is a translation with a new tune.

    2. There is no science behind your ''science''

    3. You feel a connection because one of your parents is Irish.
