This is an interesting interpretation of Buxtehude's "Jubilate Domino": elegance and virtuosity. The voice of the countertenor is both clear and smooth.
so cute and charming ian, thank you thank you and please do more for the music, i would be happy to hear mor from you! what a charming voice, so well ranged!!! wonderful!
Hello Ian, i dont´t get tired to see this video, i hear the ¨jubilate domino¨version of andreas schol who is an amazing singer but i like your way for a wider diference. well i mean there is not a ¨is better than...¨ it´s just that i feel more rich and soft your voice.
As a fellow countertenor (just now trying to get back to studying) - I am deeply moved by your performances and would LOVE to see you live! I'm not going to compare you to anyone because everyone is different, but WOW, such musicality, such beautiful everything! I can't wait to have a lesson someday or a coaching!
You have a beautiful voice. Sounds very pure and pristine... it's enchanting! :)
Funnily when I try this countertenor register, I can reach the same keys but it never sounds as pure and female-like as you... I better stick to my baritone reg then!
Great voice dude, would be great to see more new videos... ;)
His voice is not as high as Philippe Jaroussky's, but it's a lot more regal and dignified. I enjoyed his voice tremendously. Would LOVE to see him perform. Best wishes to you Ian, from San Francisco, California.
I will be singing Messiah in San Francisco this December (18th and 19th) with the American Bach Soloists at Grace Cathedral, so you won't have to wait long to hear me live.
I used to live in SF, and it is still one of my favorite places in the world.
What a wonderful surprise to "hear" from you - thank you so much. I'm looking forward to seeing you perform here in San Francisco in December. Until then best to you and thank you for sharing your performances here on YouTube.
hello Ian, I want to extend my whole admiration for your beautiful voice, i like baroque very much. Me and my sister watch this video so often, and we sing in the meantime we see it. Please sorry for my bad english, greetings from Guadalajara, México!!!
Wonderful voice! I recently learned that I am a countertenor, however my control is no where near that of yours, at least not yet nor for a while. Keep it up! great job, looking forward to more!
Blacktiger brings up an intersting point. According to the rules of Italian Latin (also known as 'Church' latin), the letter 'c' followed by an 'i' or an 'e' should be pronounced as an english 'ch' sound. I am, however, singing in German latin, since the composer was Buxtehude. If you listen closely, there are quite a few words that are pronounced differently in German latin.
Hi, I will be in England mid July with the St Thomas 5th Ave Choir from New York City. Just doing evensongs, I'm afraid without much solo work. Go to their website to get tour details (I'll be on from July 16th through 23rd).
As to your other question, I just wrote a long blog about that. Goto myspace(dot)com/ianthecountertenor. Click on to the blog and read the most recent post.
Momentous performance. I have always loved Abendmusiken, and especially works by Buxtehude. This was a wonderful rendition of my all time favourite. Thankyou. Subscription worthy.
No - Buxtehude's Klaglied..You'd need at least two viols for it though, and continuo.
The manuscript for Jubilate is in three separate parts kept in Uppsala Univerity I think. There isn't a facsimile of it available as far as I know, partly because the parts are not very user friendly.
No, she plays it well - just needs to chill more, it would be good for you. If you have access to a good library, go to the collected editions section and look under Buxtehude. It may be that the Baerenreiter edition is slighty old now and heavily edited, but I could recommend a good publisher in Germany that recently got it out if you're interested....so - when are you going to sing the Klaglied?
Oh, I thought you meant that you had access to a facsimile of the manuscript :-). I'm swinging by Yale's library next week for some other stuff (learning D. Scarlatti's Salve Regina for a recording). I'll check out the collected works. I can't remember which I used for the performance... could have been the Bärenreiter? Green cover.
I assume you are not talking about Schubert's Klaglied?
More time as in 'freer', as fantasia normally implies, not slower. But you may be interested to know that the 'con fantasia' only exists in the edited score..
Yeah, i didn't get to look at the original. Do you have scans? If you could send me pdfs I'd really appreciate it! I figured that most of the tempo and dynamic indications were editorial. I still like the way she plays the solo bit :-). But... I'm used to it, of course.
Wonderful singing! I enjoyed the Handel very much too. But your gambist needs to relax more in this piece! It's a hard gamba part, and occasionally I could feel the tension pushing you on..Perhaps she could take more time ...for example in the solo before the last section.
hmmmm.... we actually talked quite a bit about tempo for that solo moment. It is marked 'fantasia' in the score, but taking it much slower makes no sense with the overall lyric meaning of the piece. :-) Have you heard other people interpret this differently?
Ian, perfect as always, that wonderful voice of yours is like those of the angels. The violist isn't quite good :( she's not as perfect as you are. 5 stars and thanks for sharing us this
Very nice performance! I'm sure that you know, you'll make a great career. Very musical and beautifeul phrasing! Thanks a lot. The cellist is also musical but I think, she has to practice for a better sound. Pity that you can see the organist only at the last moment.
Hi, thank you. That cellist is actually a Gamba-ist! The instrument has a very different sound from the cello (more airy and thin, less vibrant) and the bow technique results in a nuance that is distinct from a cellos bite. The sound will never be as full, but is beautiful in a refreshing way (IMHO).
I wish that I had a shot to include the organist. This was the first song on the concert, and that camera had not yet been turned on. If you view my video "Flammende Rose" by Handel you will get to see the same performer (Ilya Polataev) playing harpsichord.
he has a beautiful voice, i love he haha
