The former Portishead - Bristol line used to look like that! In one place the pikeys cut up the rails for scrap ! Happily the line has been relaid, refurbished and is currently open to freight only at this time, although the last mile or so has yet to bought back into service for passenger traffic. The whole line was 'mothballed' for about 30 years!
Man, makes me wish the Lexington Sub out this way was still in place. 140 miles of track connecting two major cities in Kentucky and they tore it out because people wanted a "rail trail". There was a lot of potential for the line...
@iceman977th LOL. If there was a chance of profitability the line would have been retained. There are so many investors in North America looking for profitable lines, that if it had such potential they would have snapped it up.
The line was torn up because none of these operations would invest in it for profit. So.....it became a trail.
Thanks - Actually it's first official train was today and I'll be loading new video in the next week in high definition video. The entire line was lifted and new track bed put in place and brand new rails.
@robertgift - actually the whole line has been brought back to life, relaid (3ft 6in) new stations built and will start service 20 September apparently - a great result. Will take fresh video then and load it. This video was loaded when the limit per movie was only 100MB now it's a lot more so I had to dilute this one down
I agree with Valman 73...Auckland is a hole that should be filled in. All the politicians are good for are grandstanding. This rebuilding of the Onehunga line to take fast electric trains should never of happened. 1) the onenhunga line is to tight to run fast trains on, 2, we have no idea if the proposed airporat rail will ever go thru and of so why via onehunga, 3, the subsidised trains will compete with the much better subsidised bus service resulting in neither gaining viable support.
lived on parts of the rail route in the late 60's 70's an 80's loved old onehunga. The line was a major part of onehunga's survival suppling the wharfe with products for overseas. Onehunga had everything
You'll be pleased to hear that it has been rebuilt from the ground up. It just needs stations now. It doesn't go to the wharf yet. This won't happen until the extensions to the road bridge being built over the top of it are completed

Its good to see that this line has a future unlike most of the closed rail lines here in America.

I would have seen if the crossing signals were still active.
What gauge?
Fun to see.
Would it not be fun to take a rolling contraption down the track?!
Thanks for your video.
Wish it were much clearer.
