I'm a Beatle-freak and I've every argument possible, but Silly Love Songs is such a constant in Macca bashing.
And it's a glorious, subtle and caring FU to any critic. And I guess there's untold thousands that can play that bass line, maybe 50 could sing it and play it well.
Man, shows today are all about the video playback and spectacle. This was about the songs. No giant video screens and coordination with playing for the video. Just playing and being there for great MUSIC,
Live version is far better than studio version. His bass playing on the entire Rockshow concert movie is ridiculous. And his voice was at its best back then. I like it when he plays that bass, as opposed to the Hofner one he uses exclusively now. He played more "lead bass", back then.
Absolutely agree. His vocals are superb throughout this concert. He was in some kind of zone! Check out "Beware My Love" from same concert. Amazing. And yes, the Rick cuts through so much better than the Hofner.
@kirchfam I knoww! It's so great. Paul's got loads of practice though. It's all just so fun for him it's probably no sweat for him to sing and play that bass line. Gotta love Macca! <3
Doing the three vocals in the chorus on Silly Love Songs simultaneously and live is no easy feat.
Not the greatest ever song written, but between the vocals and a synchopated bass line (while singing lead) and a backbeat drum, this song is pretty tough to do in concert.
I adore Paul's energy on stage! True performer, he is. He also looks really happy on stage. =)

But could have anybody else come up with it?

Is there a bassist in the modern day who also sings lead vocals?
In my day, you could count them on one hand and have fingers left.
I'm a bit out of touch with today's scene. Can anyone name me one or two?

Outside of Paul, I can't name any other bass player who also sings. Looks like Paul stands alone in this this classification.

I wouldn't know about the current generation of musicians, but in the '70s and '80s there were also Geddy Lee of Rush and Benjamin Orr of The Cars.

Musicians, take note.

I think the live version is better than the original version. It`s actually not a bad pop song. It`s catchy.
