  • Two words: Limb Independence

  • My god, his playing is totally UNEXPLAINABLE...

  • If you go back and look at all the video of Neil through his career, he plays with such

precision. Look at the concentration on his face. Even more in his younger days.

  • With this much raw talent, it only begs the question, how are these guys not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

  • @TheChronos420 fuckin right??

  • Neil looks seriously bored. I love this track though.

  • I had to watch this a second time to see the drumming. because the first time I was busy doing air drums.

  • RUSH!

  • Dislike? Really? If you dislike this, you will be cast in to outer darkness. Neil Peart is a Boss on the kit.

  • @azgocats The only thing worth disliking is the quality of the video.

Rush is flawless in this performance and Neil never sounded better.

  • saw this live!

  • Goosebumps, thats all I'm gonna say

  • The greatest rock drummer in rock history period. Sorry John B.

  • All Hail!

  • not human

  • It's wonderful to hear all your opinions. These are the simple facts. I'm a drummer and I love Peart, but he could live for another 30 years and never achieve the mastery that Cobham and Rich achieved. It's absolutely no contest - 2 different stratospheres. People say you can't compare the two, but you can compare chops. I'm sure any accomplished drummer would agree. With regard to Bonham - WTF!!! Perfect for Zep, but mediocre degree of talent and chops. Would rank around 400th in the world.

  • @TalentInTheRaw , exactly! You said it better than I did.

  • 3 more that were cast out....

  • 3 people are those asshole kids that still think Joey Jordison is the best drummer of the world.

  • AWESOME!!!!

  • All I can do is look with my jaw dropped, and say to myself, this is humanly impossible!!!

    NP, is the king!

  • This guy is a bad ass!!!

  • Imagine a duel between John Bonham and Neil Peart

even thinking about it makes shit my pants of emotion...

  • How can anbody dislike this video is shows the god f drumming doing what he does best

  • Neil Pert is a DRUM GOD!! = This proves it!!

  • Que arrecho toca, realmente!!

  • I saw this song live today, It was the most incredible thing in the world

  • Rush is amazing.

  • 0:31 ao 0:41......TOTAL DOMAIN OF THE NEIL INSTRUMENT. IS MORE NECESSARY THAN BIG-BEN OF LONDON.

  • Interesting Neil Peart quote: "It doesn't matter if you've heard Buddy Rich, he's influenced your playing," explains Peart. "The first drummer I was amazed by was Billy Cobham, who was taught by TONY WILLIAMS, who was taught by ELVIN JONES before him. You don't have to know that torch of genius that Billy Cobham was carrying, and the sparks of genius in those previous incarnations, were forged by Buddy."

  • Neil's good, but Billy Cobham smokes him.

  • @jbc6 No. BC is a damn good drummer but sorry, he doesn't compare. Neil's set has to be built around him at a live show and he uses every single piece, even being almost 60 years old. I've seen Rush live 9 times over 22 years and Neil is the best. I love Cobham's work along with John Bonham, Keith Moon and Mike Portnoy. All are great in their own ways but there's a reason why all others have been compared to Neil for close to 40 years.

  • @desperauto NP is a great rock drummer, no question. His set has to be built around him? What does that mean? Look at Buddy Rich's sparse Slingerland set. Cobham definitely has more speed, power, dynamic range, and control than Neil. He can also play just about any kind of music and do it well. In fact, Neil has mentioned that BC was one of his early influences. They are two different type of drummers.

  • @desperauto , you're comparing rock drummers to the best fusion drummer of all time. No contest. Cobham is the better of the two.

  • @jbc6

    Many drummers "smoke" him

    lol

Neil played his own way, kind of stiff but very technical and precise. Everything had to be a certain way, so if you are into that type of playing, he was extremely top quality!

  • My favorite, love to play this in my car breaking the speed limit down Alligator alley!!!

Be cool or be cast out!!

  • his mom had an ok time passing neil when he was born, the drum set was another matter. this guy is simply unequaled.

  • Neil Peart is just the greatest, no other way of putting it, Rush rules.

  • thanks so much for showing the drum cam. it gives us novices a chance to see the master on one of rush's best tunes. good to see the foot pedal action also.

  • """"""""""WOW""""""""""

  • ""WOW''

  • MoFo is fast , awesome, jesus how is that even possible

  • MoFo is fast , awesome

  • How does he remember all of that! With so many great songs with so much bad assness in all of them its just amazing! The Professor!

  • God.. It's impossible to be this good... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • About the smile or no smile thing: It's not that he has to 'remember' the parts thus concentrate and not smile. It's the intensity of the playing. The mix on ALL rush albums (live or studio) don't do justice as to how hard he hits the drums, and almost always on the same spot. It's one thing to play the song, it's another thing to be a machine with extreme volume on every single bit, to pull out the best sound the drum kit can give. That's Neil. No smiles needed.

  • @MrNickdrummer You can see from the top down view that it looks like a really fast robot or machine with sticks hitting stuff, wow

  • Neil is cold :P He don't show facial expression xD !

  • its funny how people forgets how to write his name. Their destiny is death!

  • ONE QUESTION PEOPLE.............................why in the BLOODY-HELL,is not EVERY "LIVE" RUSH SONG,NOT shown from the "Drum-Cam"???? Hell,I would NEVER GET BORED watching JUST NEIL PLAY the ENTIRE WAY THROUGH!!

  • He looks so dull because he is concentrating, he is making sounds my ears have orgasms to. he needs to focus

  • OMN!! (Oh My Neil) Baffles the mind!

  • Nobody does it like Rush!!! Neil is just amazing!!! no drummer ever to play like this epic gent!

  • The best!!!!!

  • @candie0891 you think this is good, watch Tom Sawyer................

  • I know Neil Pert has been drumming for years, and that it's probably been a long gig, he's tired. All these gigs feel the same, he's sick of the songs, probably annoyed at the Cameraman distracting him. But can he at least PRETEND he's having a good time? Force a fucking smile mate, fuck, it's like looking at the worlds dullest man perform amazing drum rolls.

  • @Dagon17 That's called concentration. The thing about Neil is he never has insane smiles of glee on his face. He keeps very very very concentrated to play each part to perfection. He's having a good time. He'd just rather concentrate on NAILING that drum part rather than "forcing a fucking smile".

  • @Obelix5150 Neil has been playing these songs since the 70's, hell he wrote some of them. It's not like he's a struggling student, trying to "nail" the drums so that his shitty cover band will get a patter of applause and not heckled. I'm sure he knows the songs so well that he doesn't even have to try, do anything for that long and it becomes as easy as breathing. So yes, he should force a smile, because nothing puts me off a song is a guy playing who looks like he's at a meeting at 6 am.

  • @Dagon17 I think it's more of a testament to Neil's perfectionism than him being "bored" with the material. He never smiled even back in the day when the songs were fresh. I'd rather see his mask of concentration than him crack a contrived smile. If you're put off, you're put off. I happen to like his very serious and studious look as he plays. So to each his own.

  • @Obelix5150 Fair enough. :)

  • @Dagon17 Ditto!!!! I've always loved Rush, but the first time I saw Peart perform, I literally had to turn off the video. He is without a doubt one of the stiffest, most unfeeling drummers I've ever seen. He looks like he hates what he's doing - a big chore. Definitely not a showman - far more suited to studio work - a face for radio. Anybody who thinks he can even come anywhere near Cobham simply is unqualified to judge. Lets see him lay down some 26/32 or 19/16 with feeling. I rest my case.

  • @TalentInTheRaw And you can die knowing that no one will no you, critic.

  • i think neil peart can defeat chuck norris no doubts

  • @ifrit945 chuck norris is so fast he can run arounnd the entire world and punch hhimselff in the back of his own head

  • Superb!.

  • no words to describe!!!!!

  • The Professor !!!

  • every time i hear this song it takes me back to walking through the snow to hang out with my friends. love it.

  • I have loved RUSH since they began!

  • The master at work!!

  • Not many groups sound as good live as they do on their record, but these guys do.

  • the GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DAT DRUMMIN'

  • vou dizer uma coisa...puta que paril

    bom pra caralho... é só.

  • As far as technique goes you can't get much better than that. Text book drumming right there...

  • Yeee haw! Gonna see them live in May!

  • @Mauday me too, in manchester.

  • anyone who says that Peart is not a good drummer should not even be able to look upon a drum set.

  • 3 people have no souls

  • Gives me chills watching this...

  • Ok, seriously, how can there be any debate about who the greatest rock drummer ever would be? There might be faster players, or players who play more complex polyrhythms, but for an overall blend of groove, power, precision and just plain old mad skills, no one even comes close. All hail the master!

  • @Javdoc Imo Peart is quite boring. Meh, Rush is pretty boring imo.

  • @Javdoc agreed 100% - he is simply amazing

  • @Javdoc There is no greatest drummer. This arguing shit get's so annoying. I may have done it myself a few times, but it will always lead to no solution. There will never be a greatest drummer ever, and there will be no perfect drummer either. There will always be room for improvement for every drummer, no matter what skill level.

  • @Zegers93 your absolutely right.

  • I'm not new at watching videos, but this is the first time I've seen one where the camera concentrated solely on one person. And in my humble opinion, that guy is one fucking GREAT drummer. Easily one of the best things I've seen on YouTube.

  • @smokiebird06

that guy, my friend, is none other Neil Peart!!!

  • @smokiebird06 sorry to burst your bubble but we're only seeing the drum cams. they have the same thing for geddy and alex. this is only the neil footage

  • What amazes me the most about Neil is how much importance and care he puts in every single note he plays, and his brutal intensity - if you think he hits lightly think again, he has complete power all the time. Hard to believe this song is from 1982. I wish some day I could have a chat with Neil, so many questions to ask on how he came up with parts, and how can he make the impossible seem so easy.

  • It looks as if Neil was born in that spot and the drums just grew up around him. If anyone wants to know what I want for my next birthday, I want to play the drums like Neil Peart. HA HA! This guy is incredible. Thanks, Rush!

  • mind blowing

  • what the hell!! how can three people dislike this piece of art??

  • nice upload! nice to know he really is just a bloke givin it some!!

  • The first time I saw this, I was speechless. If you don't get how awesome this guy is, then you are the type of person who walks into the Louvre and says, "What is all this crap on the wall?" I could watch this guy all day.

  • Any more songs out there of just Peart drumming? Would love to see just him on Tom Sawyer!

  • @JakeJarmel Tom Sawyer and Subdivisions are the only two that are included on Neil's "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" dvd, both taken from the R30 concert in Frankfurt. I haven't ever seen the drums-only version of Tom Sawyer on youtube though. If you want to see it you'll have to get the dvd but at least it does exist. I'm not even a drummer (I play guitar) and I've got both of Neil's drumming dvds.

  • @JakeJarmel Ok, well there is a 2 minute preview of "Neil only" playing Tom Sawyer on drums, just search for "Neil Peart Tom Sawyer" and look for the hudsonmusicdvd clip. At least you can see some of it.

  • i got this stroke for stroke up to 2:09. another couple sessions and ill hve it all!!!

  • I have to say Neil Pert has the largest Drum kit that exist today.

  • Yeah, the song that brought me into Rush. It was my gateway song that made me a Rush fan for life.

  • From WikiLeaks, D.O.D memo: "According to technical specifications, if a small nuclear device were detonated 200 feet from Neil Peart he would survive the initial blast. However, the fallout would kill him within 48 hours. Due to this and its complete lack of mobility we cannot recommend the Peart Drum Kit be deployed as standard defensive equipment in the battlefield."

  • @daveadler

hmm, I'd probably go ahead and deploy it ...

  • oh Rush is coming to Rotterdam in May 2011 which is about the closest location for me, I really dont know if I should go or not? Will they play this song too? This is probably the only chance for me to ever see them live and this song is so wonderful but I dont know if I should go or not

  • @VvicsieE78 I would, without hesitation.

  • BEAST on drums

  • The Professor!

  • this song is on rb3!

  • Q: know what I say EVERY time I hear this song?

A: I fucking love that song!

  • @SnowDogRedSectorEh You know what I say everytime I hear Rush?

    I LOVE RUSH

  • @bluesboy25000

Of course, that goes without saying - in fact, in Canada it's crime not to.

    lol

  • @SnowDogRedSectorEh -------fort lauderdale sunrise ---march 28---------front row---------cant get any better than that to watch these guys jam out

  • pff omg!

  • 3 people are idiots

  • greatest drummer of our generation.

  • Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame is nothing compared to Rush lol

  • Rush----Subdivision

  • Niel Pert is like an evil genius in his lab with those drums!

  • @unincorporated1

I TRY to follow him, but he is an octopus.

  • @unincorporated1

Sorry mate but its Peart, not Pert.. Please get it right in future cause it really gets on my nerves.

  • @unincorporated1 It's "Neil Peart", not "Niel Pert"...

    Your English grade: F.

  • @unincorporated1 why do you think they call him the professor?

  • i cried when i saw it live yesterday

  • @petruccichile si wn estuvo la RAJA CSM !!! AMO ESTA BANDA !!!!

  • That guy's drumming is like a fucking deisel locomotive coming at ya! Neil's the man.

  • This makes me feel all kind of shivers. I might pee a little when I see it live next week.

  • GIVE IT UP FOR MR. NEIL PEART.

  • Thank you for posting this. Even though I'm a bass player, when I listen to Rush, I don't want to play bass- I want to play drums!

There are several sections to this song, notably the part immediately after the last chorus (4:54), that continue to throw me off, but for the most part I can play a good amount of this song. This video will help me figure out the parts I keep messing up. Again, thanks for posting. \m/

  • I wonder if this stuff is ever hard for him to play?

I mean, does he ever have an off night? Jeez...

  • square shoulders and still head signs of a technical drummer it is how I can spot a great drummer from a basher

  • i know virtually nothing about drumming but some of his time-changes seem complex as hell and yet he makes it look like an afterthought. good Lord!

  • I know this is probably late saying this, but I think you should have put the title "Neil Peart- Subdivisions LIVE- RUSH" since they didn't show anybody else. lol

  • Doesn't this song sound so cosmic with Neil Peart's drumming and the synthesizer playing at the same time? I will never get tired of this song.

  • Who would have thought the best drummer in the world would be from fuckin hagershweagan(sic) Ontario.

  • 3 germans disliked this video

  • Neil Peart is just sheer greatness he's playing the drums as if he's ordering a pizza it's like nothing i'm jealous I hate you Neil Peart for being talented as you are. See you in Dallas

  • Neil Peart is the man. In the history of rock music, there have been many great drummers (John Bonham, Keith Moon, Mike Portnoy, Ginger Baker, etc), but, in my opinion, no one has come very close to the same level of brilliance that Neil Peart is on. 74gretsch is right; Neil Peart is bad to the bone...

  • @seattlejohn01 I agree. Neil is one BADASS MOFO! I LOVE his solos!!! Let us not forget names like Carl Palmer (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame). He has a PhD in percussion, fercrissake! And Nick Mason of Pink Floyd (he is MY personal favorite but I'm old school)! His work on DSOTM (especially on "Time") was second to none! Hell, that whole album is still on the charts from 1969!!! :)

  • There is the concept that you can do more , with less. I would feel trapped inside such a kit. Still love Neils' playing , though.

  • i love rush, but i cant help that every time i see peart i see brian griffin snorting cocaine. haha

  • @rhc1407 Curious as to why you'd think that.

  • Comment removed

  • that drum set is ridiculous! does he have to be airlifted into it? even more sick is the guy behind the drums, quite amazing ...

  • espero el 17 de octubre para ver porfin a una de mis bandas favoritas en chile!!!! las entradas estan bastante caras pero por ver a RUSH vale totalmente la pena......

  • oooooooooooooooooh so THAT's how he plays it..........still just gonna set my drums on fire though...

  • I'm mortified. He's so slow and inept at the drums. Makes me cryl.

  • neil peart is freaking awesonme

  • in the late 70's early 80's.... as a young drummer in Jr High School Neil Peart was one of three who I emulated my drumming style after...And he still rocks it pretty damn good!

  • drum cam, but hey what a flawless man such drive and integrity iron clad and solid, the best by far.

    a true inspiration.

  • Neil's Kit = RUSH Command Control Center !

  • I highly regret not getting tickets for the Time Machine tour :(

  • @THEPANTSWEREDEAD ya whell there not coming to vancouver for some retarded reason so u can go

  • @THEPANTSWEREDEAD BULLSHIT ONE OF THEIR BEST !!!

  • omg geddy lee is the man !

  • Are there anymore vids like this of Neil Peart isolated playing more RUSH songs?

    That was stunning!!!!!

  • @NS9144 Der tommler

  • Thanks

  • Don't quite understand this video. Yes, it's a good song. Yes, Peart's a great drummer. But he could've done this song on a much smaller kit, and the drumming isnt that technically difficult.

  • @mimosa87 Just because it can be played on a smaller kit doesn't mean it should be. Over the course of a show Peart utilizes the vast majority of that kit. Do you have any experience drumming? This song takes a sufficient level of skill to pull of. Sure it's not Peart's most difficult song, but it is impressive

  • @Arangil21 Over the course of a single Rush show, there is not one single element of his kit he does not touch. Between YYZ and his solo for the show, everything gets used. 'Der Trommler' is a perfect example.

  • @mimosa87 ....perhaps he played more than one song at this performance....

  • @mimosa87 wat about the solos at the end are they technically difficult? fuck yes
