  • Hey Zombie as stated before I have a niece who's 21 and swears that Lady Vomit "cough" excuse me Lady Gaga is the greatest thing going.I once told her that the artists she enjoys listening to now were influenced by the ones that I and you acknowledge.Again as stated before if these artist today came up in the decades of the 30's up to the 90's they wouldn't make it at all.

  • @qix77 God Bless, buddy!

  • Damn, I'd love some of those babes to blow my horn, if you catch my drift ;)

  • @qix77 Because our world has gone to shit. Haven't you noticed?

  • @qix77 It is the commercialization of this world, we don't care about quality, we only care about quantity. It is sad indeed.

  • @qix77 You are so right!!!

  • they all dead

  • @dicksqueezy What a shame that they are gone a movie should have been made about their exploits and accomplishments

  • thanks much for posting i just bought a tape of their recordings on Cassette

  • @qix77 - one of my friends shared this with me! My channel is an archive of a century of pop music, with 111 playlists for every year since 1900, and playlists for over 350 artists. Pick a year you like and listen up to 2 hours!

  • @qix77 because this generation of kids see style over substance.

  • @dal4018

I couldn't have said it better.

  • @RetroZombieee Thanks Zombie hey check this out yesterday was the birthday of a music legend named Louis Jordan had he lived he would have been 102 yr young say a belated happy birthday to the REAL KING OF ROCK MUSIC.

  • @RetroZombieee Thanks Retro man my niece is a fan of Lady Gaga I call her Lady Vomit and I 'am not alone.

  • @dal4018

Oh man! I swear lady gaga is horrible. She is only 'liked' for her stupid outfits, I don't even know if I can even CALL them outfits! I'm glad I don't like that type of music y'know? I am a 14 year old girl with a great taste in music in my opinion.

  • @RetroZombieee Hey Zombie you want to hear more great music go to dailymotion

  • I had no Idea. This is just another case of "The media shows us only what it wants."

  • @CoasterCloud You couldn't be more on the money with that comment. This applies today as well as years ago. I've always seen this to be true.

  • INSPIRING!!!

  • Hey Molin would you like to see a full length flick about these music pioneers?

  • Your right molin this is inspiring

  • Hey Schoolin/Tanazanite how is this for a battle of the sexes The ISR vs Cab Calloway&company?????

  • Hey Schoolin/Tanzanite the woman who did the sax solo for The International Sweethearts Of Rhythm was Vi Burnside don't know her birthdate or her demise but it was said that she died in the 50's in Washington DC.

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Tanzanite as stated before would love to see a full length feature film done about these musical pioneers think anyone would step up to the plate and make this project into reality?

  • "must have been dubbed by male preformers" - the cheek!

  • Typical a man thinking a group of women can't make good music.

  • Schoolin you are you female wouldn't blame you for getting upset by that comment just like I was. THE CHEEK LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol, I know! Damn Im glad it isn't like that today, can you imagine all of the talent we would have missed out on? From Miss Franklin to Sheryl Crow...

  • Yes but some I personally wouldn't miss some like Brittany Spears it seems that all she does is have her name and face in the tabloids she has ZERO vocal range.

  • Hey Schoolin would you like to have seen a typical battle of the sexes on film between these female bands vs the guys I would.I tell you right now my pick would have been to see the International Sweethearts Of Rhythm led by Anna Mae Winburn go up against Duke Ellington& company again how would they stack up vs this legend and his boys???????

  • That's a tough one; The sweethearts were a bundle of raw talent that jammed like crazy, but ellington had the style and swagger that really captures the late 30's, early 40's for me. I wouldn't know who to choose myself, I'd have loved to hear a collaberation though, that'd be awesome.

  • Yeah, it's not really music is it? It's just promotion of a face, the modern industry is riddled with it. Money over music.

  • I love the though that there were female big band orchestras...goes to show they succeed in other things other than the war

  • Comment removed

  • I agree purclassic I would have loved to see a typical battle of the sexes between them and the top male jazz bands of the era how do you think they would have stacked up against the good ole boy network?

  • I would have loved to have seen it, dal4018!

Great videos like this, are proof, that there's a lot to our music history -- many of us -- have yet to learn.

It's also incredible to see how classy and stylish they were, while they performed. Especially, compared to today's artists. Think of someone like LadyGaga (who is very popular) but uses a lot of "shock factor" to portray her music.

It's sad that today's music, isn't more like this.

  • Me too Tanzanite especially The International Sweethearts of Rhythm led by Anna Mae Winburn against Duke Ellington&company.

  • Darn! I can't recall her name BUT .. in the 20s and I believe part of 30s, she was a successful band leader of a MALE band.

She was herself a damn good bass player, and Gene Krupa played in her band at the very beginning of his career. Drive me nut that I can't recall her name at this time. I am surprised she wasn't included here. Anyone know who I'm referring to?

  • Hey Single person the answer to your question is Blanche Calloway you may know that last name because she had very successful male sibling Cab Calloway.A movie should be made about this woman and I think Tia or Tamera Mowry should have first dibs at playing the lead role.

  • I just found her name. It was Thelma Terry and she hired Krupa. This was in the 1920's

  • @betteroffsingle Thanks Single person just saw Terry's bio and she was the first woman.

  • Thelma Terry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia31 Jan 2009 ... Thelma Terry and Her Playboys was the first American woman to lead a notable jazz orchestra as an instrumentalist. ...

  • @betteroffsingle Hey Single person you can add Anna Mae Winburn to the short but distingiushed list of women who lead all male jazz bands she lead the The Cotton Club Boys from Omaha.Charlie Christian a guitarist was a member of her band.

  • oh I loves oldschool jazz :D

  • What a treat!

  • This is great!;D

  • Man you gotta love this music, reminds me of chigago

  • Curious

  • I LOVE VERY MUCH!!

  • The REASON we can't have this kind of music any more are the Unions, God bless 'em.

Who could pay for such a musical extravaganza with logistical support, promo and Ticketmaster all piling fees on top of the union rate for each performer?

  • are you and the 6 people who put a thumbs up KIDDING ME?

were you a hippy in the 40's? fighting the man by being a flapper lol

  • Please tell me what Ina Ray Hutton song was featured in this video?

  • lol...

  • Thanks for posting. These musicians have been ignored for waaaaay too long.

  • Tell me about it. I cant find a Cheryl Bentyne CD anywhere. I know she isnt from this era but she does a version of It Shouldnt Happen To a Dream. Sounds amazing.

  • @profwoof A movie should be made about these forgotten musicians

  • @profwoof

IMO it is better that they are enjoyed by a slelct few (us) than featured as a side note

  • At 1:26... Is that..... Is that a man on the left side wearing a dress?!?!?!

    AHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • No, I checked it out , just very BUTCH

  • sounds good...

  • And I thought a new alot about the history of jazz. Thanks this is wonderful music.

  • That conductor needs it bad.

  • Fantastic post. Very informative. There were so many influential women in the history of jazz who, for the most part, go unacknowledged. I especially liked the bit about the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the first racially integrated all women's band in the United States. They were not only immensely talented, but big-hearted, using their music to support a school for poor children, and they were extremely brave in defying the Jim Crow laws of the era. Thanks for this great clip.

  • This makes men sweat, the thought of women being as good if not sometimes better than them.

  • This subject would make a nice movie if someone had the courage to make it.

  • wandeful music...they should do something like this now.....

  • those shorts of Ina Ray Hutton were seen in Barcelona in 1937 in a jazz festival organized by A.Matas (pioneer in 40s of cuban TV)to the benefit of combatant and International brigades..local jazz fans recently remember it..our best jazz and tango singer in 36 was Carmelita Aubert.you,ll find her in BLUE MOON RECORDS.XQuiñones

  • I wish that there was more coverage of these bands. I would like to hear more about them.

  • A really wonderful clip. But, I only know Ina Ray Hutton. Who are the other bands?

  • If you listen to what the woman tells, you will hear the names of the other band;-)

  • Awesome!!!

  • What a cool clip!!! Something I never realized! Thanks for posting!
