  • non rescued meat birds only live 6-8 weeks before being killed?...:'''( that's so sad...

  • bien gordo tu gallo

  • very sweet bird, sorry he is gone! i don't understand, why do meat birds die young?

  • They die from heart attack or suffocation because they get so big their bodies can't handle the weight. I'm not sure how they manipulate them genetically but it is very sad.

  • They used selective breeding to create the broiler breeds, much in the same way different breeds of dogs were made. Chickens that grow slower are usually tougher by the time they are big enough for slaughter.

  • His story is sad...

  • I have a rooster about the size of a butterball.

  • Oh my! I adore broilers. I have had several 'school incubation project' chicks come live with me over the last few years, even rescued one that literally fell off the chicken truck on his way to slaughter. I think (most of them if raised right) have the most wonderful personalities. My broiler hens would come right up and lay down in my lap. I miss them when they're gone. Truly it's sad how short their lives are. I enjoy eating chicken, but think these genetically modified birds are a shame.

  • Glad to hear that this lil guy was rescued.

    ^^

  • Thank you, he was a joy to have in the barn, and I miss him very much.

  • What age was your rooster? At the first "crows", the real voice develops. If it is old, then you can say you raised your crow properly.

  • In this taping he was about 14 months old. The poor old bird only lived to 18 months of age due to his breeding to be a meat bird. They don't live much past a year of age before heart attack or suffocation kills them. =(
