I used to jam to this song so much as a kid! My grandma had it on vinyl and would play it on her phonograph all the time, im pretty sure this was one of the first songs i knew all the words too. 18 years later i still know all the words haha.
Remember this and Pigmeat Markham's 'I Am The Judge' out that same summer. Too much of a coincidence, but both got heavy rotation on Radio Luxembourg.
i first heard this in 1971 at the ripe old age of 15 yrs old , tried everywhere to buy it but couldn't .... i've not heard it in nearly 40 yrs !!! thanks for posting ... C A L ... uk
WOW ! Great memories. I was 16 and my parents bought me my first horse for $150.00 . That was alot of money back then .. I name him .. JUDGE .. after this great hit that was playing that summer ! Thanks for posting. ! Haven't heard it in years . It's my birthday in 3 hours ! lol!
Shorty Long, gone but not forogtten (1940-1969)! A little trivia note: the voice of "The Judge" in the spoken segments is the late Pervis Jackson, who was the Spinners' bass singer.
You're right. And I had that single and used to play the hell out of both sides.
I know I sound like an old fart, but pop music really was so much better back then. Growin up in the second half of the Sixties, AM radio provided a terrific soundtrack to your life and the music ranged from great R & B like this to some of the best pop and hard rock records ever made.
Hello SIR, welcome back to the Earth. It's been a very long time. I've missed you. I still have yet to see our Redwood Tree and visit the Land of the Midnight Sun. Like almost everybody, I'm still waiting for the cowards to stop being cowards. As you have commanded, they will reap in all Courts of Laws what they have sown. Truth and non-violence are still the greatest of all powers. Thank You. I Love You. 1:01 p.m. (EST) 10/8/2009 C.E., Thursday
My dad is constantly singing the beginning of this song, I never even heard it until now and I can't help but laugh, thinking about my dad, haha. Thanks for posting this!

Heard this song once when I was a very young kid; have been thinking about since. Now after hearing this, I don't want to ever hear it again!! What crap!
Here Comes the Judge started as a sketch on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, and Sammy Davis Jr. was often featured on that popular comedy show. In the summer of 1968, when Shorty's record came out, there were two other songs released as "Here Comes the Judge" -- one by the Magistrates, the other by the Buena Vistas. (My favorite Shorty Long hit is Function at the Junction.)
Here come the judge was a sketch done by comedian Pigmeat Markham long before Laugh-In. He also recorded the original "Here come the Judge" song before Shorty Long
long lost, I bought this single after watching the Here Come the Judge bits on Laugh In. I believe I purchased this Shorty Long 45 down at Singer's. Yes, the same Singer's that sold sewing machines. They had a top 40 section at the rear of the store. Cool, huh! Sewing machines AND phonograph records!! You don't find much of that anymore.
That's unusual, we didn't ever have Singer shops here in Brighton, UK, but in the 60's I used to get my Motown 45 rpm singles in a large store called Bellmonds, they were called "Tamla Motown" label then as we didn't have all the separate labels of Motown as in the US, great times eh?
Yes I agree with you. I also remember the Singer shops having records. When I was little I remember going with my Mom, she was buying stuff for the machine and we bought a Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass record also.
Wally, you're right! Singer Sewing Machines did sell records. When I was a little girl back in the 60s my family lived in Morristown, New Jersey and I can remember my older sister and myself walking to Singer Sewing Machines Shop which was located in an area called "The Green" or more commonly known as Park Place, to specifically buy this record. Wow! Brought back memories.....
Yeah! I used to buy records at Singer too. They were a big draw because they cost only 67 cents each, compared with 89 or 99 cents everywhere else. I'd make a special trip over there every week and pick up three or four records. It was only singles; no LPs. The kids looking for records would come into a store where little old ladies typically shopped.
Amazing to think that 4 versions of that song hit the top 100 in 1968, only "Unchained Melody" which also had 4 versions in 1955 has done that i think.

This came out at the same time as Pigmeat Markham. Caused some confusion in the store! Both are very good.

As I recall, from some 42 years ago there was a flip side to this record called "The Trail". It was very funny. Anyone have it and will post it?
arkypig12 2 years ago
You sure that wasn't the flip side to Pigmeat Markham's hit single with the same name as Shorty Long's hit?
finylvinyl66 2 years ago
@finylvinyl66: Pigmeat's single was on Chess and had the comedy bit "The Trial" on the B-side.

@arkypig12: Someone does have both sides of Pigmeat Markham's single (which was on Chess) posted on YT...
...you had the b-side to this Soul (Motown) label wrong...the instrumental version of this song is on Shorty Long's single.

Great songs don't die young, pity Shorty didn't live long enough to have more hits and become as famous as he should be.
