This song can both make me smile and make me cry. He is an artist who can warm the soul with just his voice alone. This is one of the best videos I have ever seen of this song. Thank you, uploader. This is truly a gift!
@bedazzledbystephanie Your comment just makes me laugh to the point of tears as I watched this video! :) Thank you for taking away any chance of not noticing the bobble-heading! :)
I am always in awe of artists who can pull together a wondrous display of music in such fashion...the orchestra...it's just...no words can describe this...it's just a rare artist who can take a song and transcend it into a journey...wow. Bravo.
@hemet92544 Just thought the same thing. I think its because Gray's lyrics make sense to me most of the time. The Dave Matthews' that i listen to is mostly just nonsense with a few choice songs that have a tangible meanings.
This song is probably the single most important song of my life. As motherocean24 said, it carries me away. But that's just not strong enough to describe.
Who knows what songs are about?Someone trying to survive or reproduce? interpret them or not-this sounds libertarian to me, a philosophy that goes to all areas of life-relationships too.
relationships = working hard to make it all work..........."just trying to keep my head together, and as we make my VOW, let us remember how, that nothing good lasts FOREVER" "running through a world that's lots its meaning".....oh how true. (seeing DG live on 3/20/10)
I so love the emotion he has when he performs-absolutely mezmorizing---I know not the right spelling- Like wintontr wrote- passion, insight, artistry talent- sums it up
@sonixelectronix True, however this song can take on a unique meaning to each person who hears it. For me it is all about how I've lived my life, running one to one thing or the next, seeking freedom where none can be found. (Except, for me, it IS found in my Faith.) In the final verse, I personalize it:
@gishdiver Maybe if there were NOT people to "protect and serve" then we'd learn to protect and serve ourselves and one another. May all those who put their faith in society fall so those who believe in nothing outside of community might thrive again.
@gishdiver Maybe if there were NOT people to "protect and serve" then we'd learn to protect and serve ourselves and one another. May all those who put their faith in society fall so those who believe in nothing outside of community might thrive again.
I exist in this world like a distant Alien whose crash landing keeps him stuck here, unwanted and un-wanting....yet when I listen to the words from this remarkably introspective song, for a brief minute, I belong....Thanks David.
I'm all for him being played on the radio etc...that was a mild hint of sarcastic wisdom. I've been a fan of David Gray for over 5 years. Someone told me about him and that I would enjoy his style and pure talent. It's true~ he has a pure voice with a story behind his music. I say share it with the world.
So for someone to share his gift with the world or "mainstream" is wrong. We consider is SELLING out!!! Why....why not allow other to experience the beauty of what we found in his music? I think some believe Jack Johnson is a sellout but I have yet to hear him on the radio. Amazing opinions this world has! Don't ya think!!!
you've never heard jack johnson on the radio? really? he has like 10 songs on the radio... the reason JJ isn't a sellout is even though he is on the radio, he hasn't changed what he's always been doing to get ON the radio, which is what a sell out would be... david gray isn't a sell out either, sometimes good music just finds its way to the masses, its rare but it happens
I'm only commenting cuz you posted this several times in different variations, but you do realize this song has absolutely nothing to do with the freedom and soldiers you speak of right? this is about personal psychological freedom, freedom from past loves, freedom of the straints of society, freedom of the mind. In fact it is partially completely the opposite of the totalitarian freedom that soldiers die to protect.
Phenomenal. The cello makes the concert breathtaking! I love the stage, the colouring, everything. Beautiful job. David you are just a modern day poet, artist and dare I said it, prophet. Beautiful. Live, you are ASTOUNDING.
We just seen him at the ABC in Glasgow and David Gray and the rest of the band were so good. Me and my husband had such a great night. This was the 4th time we have seen him first class. xxxxx Love him 2 bits
i agree p3psim4 this is absolutley awe inspiring music people who say there is no decent talent out there are completley wrong all this rap music and stuff this is music at its best.

Uhh that chello is just like so haunting....I'll be shoitin ih tonight...but with that free sence of the song...how does he do it/ Is he buried already?
this song has haunted me since the day i first heard it & as i'm now going through a painful divorce, it is echoing through my head from "... & as we make our vow, let us remember how, there's nothin good that lasts forever" to "the end is close at hand, i think we understand, there ain't no use trying to delay it".. this brother's got soul. May he continue making music from the heart that truly matters.
i agree wiv ya mate...this guy has got soul, the songwriting ability is absolutely amazin....have u listened 2 his early stuff, lost songs and flesh....the lyrics are awesom
Oh I sure have. Lost Songs was actually the "soundtrack" to our relationship at it's best moments... ah... memories.... May you all hold your loved one's close & never take them for granted for it may all go away some day.
Its horrible when painful memories associated with brilliant music travels with us far beyond their deserved life. Howie Day's "Ghost" makes my stomach churn while eliciting fond yet corrosive memories. Fortunately however this song's pristine eloquence and innocent connotations are preserved for a life time. Nothing will ever corrupt that.
Knowing what this guy was goin through when he wrote the album this song is from, I gotta think this is a tough song to sing anytime he performs it. Kinda lends a beautiful layer of emotion to it. Great song.
If Julian Sims reads this, I want him to know he is the most important person in my life and means more than the world to me. I am so glad we met, you have enriched my life in so many ways. You are my soul mate and the love of my life. I will always be here for you, no matter what our differences are. I only hope that one day you allow me to give you the thing you want most in the world. My one true love. Love you always honey k xxx xxx xxx
