  • Pleasure

    Power- that which we make

They think that makes them happy.

    Values, creative, something you make

Experiences...natural beauty. with another person as in a loving relationship

Seeing unique view in world around us

Attitudinal value...what values do we choose? Loving forgiving brave generous or spiteful and mean spirited?

  • Very healthy advice here, Dr. Lewis! It's interesting to define happiness as a consciously moral attitude. Do you think this applies equally or differently to worldviews such as faith and obedience to God in Judeo-Christianity or belief in karma in Indian religions? Not sure what kind of thoughts you've given that, but the nature of your talk here seemed inspired by spirituality. Am I mistaken?

  • @Portubed I believe, as did Frankl, that a consciously responsible attitude applies equally across cultures. Frankl believed in the existence of the human spirit, defined as that which makes us uniquely human - above all our capacity to live beyond ourselves through causes to serve and people to love (self-transcendence rather than self-actualization). He thought of the human spirit as the core of our being, who we "are" as opposed to the mind and the body that we "have."

  • @kspsychmaster I see, that's relevant and interesting, but in the research field what kind of empirical studies did he develop or prompted? Or is it just more of a philosophical, a priori perspective? Thanks. :)

  • @Portubed The notions of free will and meaning in life are a priori. Frankl was an existentialist and phenomenologist. His constructs of will to meaning and existential vacuum have psychometric support. There are specific techniques based on his theory that have been validated empirically. Most studies in his logotherapy are individual and group case studies. Research is ongoing; there are about 5 scientific journals worldwide dedicated to his approach.

  • Thank you so much for your insight, your video gives us much to contemplate.

  • I have to admit, my attitude is a constant struggle. oh boy! This is a great video. Thank you. it helped to remind me of the things that make me happy. :)

hope you have a wonderful new year!

  • Happy New Year to you, too!!! We have so much work to do in 2010 that choosing our attitudes will remain a challenge for us all! Blessings to you.
