The tiny pick up arm is attached to the glass lid. The arm, which they called a "micro-tracer" was a unipivot design. When the arm went slightly off tangential it would break a beam of light, and then a motor will push the platter over to align the arm once again so the stylus returns to being tangential with the groove.
the undertray moving the platter assembly -- how does that react to the grooves. All records are cut differently, the distance is never the same. Is it some kind of sensitive friction or is it electronic feedback from the pickup?
Indeed, and then the turntable moves under the needle. With the black button on the left you can do that fast, searching for a certain song. It sounds like the dentist.
What a great name. It is a not-so-logical design indeed. Maybe that's why it's unique?
