For all the people complaining that this version is rough or sounds like a first attempt, then that's because it is.
Colin Greenwood: "The version of "Unravel" on the webcast was the first time we were running through it and we just kept it because it was so tentative. You could tell we were feeling our way through it, which is very nice to see, isn't it?"
@ravel111 - I guess it comes down to this. Beauty has nothing to do with perfection, despite what today's culture thinks. We are told that air-brushed, blemish free people are what we should aspire to, but that's bollocks. I, and I suspect others, would like soul, rather than a technically flawless performance.
Maria Carey has no soul (I have the certificate from the devil to prove it). This may not be perfect - I'm not even saying I love it - but it's got feeling, and that's worth something
While I LOVE bjork and Radiohead alike... this cover is a bit... off. I like the way thom sings here but it's a bit uneven and he doesn't hit all the notes sometimes, making the song a little less enjoyable for me. I don't know, it sounds like a music student trying to do this cover rather than the thom that I know.
@ravel111 Well, you must not know Thom very well. He is not a perfectionist, and often misplays, or slips up. I enjoy those performances even more, as it shows that he is very much human.
@cescoissocoollike that's a rather sloppy excuse. Any artist can then say: "well I'm human so it's OK to make mistake after mistake". Nope. I don't buy it. You don't have to be a perfectionist, since we all know that every artist is human and will make mistakes, but I don't understand how if Thom makes a mistake it's "human" and makes the performance more enjoyable, but if someone like Mariah Carey makes a singing error then it's apocalypse now.
@ravel111 I'd say the same thing if this was him trying to be a tight performer. But this seems off the cuff, since it was during a testcast before their actual webcast performance. I'm guessing he was just messing around with the song, waiting around, and never previously sat down to do a full-blown, well-rehearsed thing.
@OrangeySnicket which is fine, I wouldn't judge him harshly for that. I just don't like it, I would prefer a well played version to this, which I do understand may be an off the cuff performance (not perfect ofc, that's impossible). What bothers me is that people try to justify his mistakes/imperfections as something that makes him more special than other artists of the same right. He is one of the most amazing artist, granted, but it's not due to his mistakes- it's due to his genius.
if anyone should cover bjork its thom yorke lol oh! and that one choir youtube promoted i heard them do a bjork song and it was surprisingly beautiful i was scared to listen at first, thinkin they would butcher it...but i was pleasantly surprised they took it very seriously and sang wonderfully <3 bjork, thom, and those darn kids! lol <3

huge fan but have to agree. this is more horrible than flat. death cab same thing. horrible awful. billy corrigan can probably cover it better and that would be completely horrible.did i mention that this is horrible
Maybe your just soo loyal to Bjork that u think no one should be aloud to cover her songs and are too blind to see its actually a good cover. Its Thom's voice and style that captivates fans. Whether or not its a cover is often irrelevant. Besides its not like hes some untalented failure trying to use other artists songs to draw attention to himself.
He's not raping anything you single minded person.. Why can't people just enjoy music rather than take everything so seriously ... stupid kids on YouTube talking about things like 'Black people invented this music' and 'That's not rock' irritate me.
It's a damn SONG! Not a newly elected president. Personally i would interpret this as Radiohead ADMIRING Bjork and recognizing her talent. Even kids do this kind of thing.. play the music they love so much from thier favourite bands etc.
& being in awe of Bjork's ability to deal with a lot of shit doesn't take anything away from Thom... cause hardly ANYONE can deal with shit as well as her I think, and they had to deal with different shit anyway. it doesn't mean I don't think Thom is a great person too, and of course I can't even try to compare their own music to each other, cause I love both so much.
when did I say Thom wasn't incredible? the cover is good and was so nice to hear! yes, personally I'd listen more often to Thom and Bjork both singing their own material or collaborating together. I was just responding to some earlier comments saying this was a big improvement on Bjork's version, which I can't see at all. the people saying it's a lazy version are really wrong, he put his soul into it, but Bjork singing the song means more to me, which I tried to explain.
I've got to say, hearing that story where her own fans turned on her this way, and watching all the interviews that treat her like a little girl in the mid 90s, I was in awe of the way Bjork could deal with so much shit and come out saying "you can't say no to hope/ you can't say no to happiness" and make a violent, forceful album that is still optimistic, without ever being bitter, in the end still full of love. Thom would probably be the first to admit he is not that strong.
just found this, for any Radiohead fans who don't love Bjork yet /watch?v=OBakqeyXeCk (the saddest simplest performance of Unravel.) & the line "the devil collects it with a grin" originally may be about how a crazed, racist Bjork "fan" mailed a bomb to her in '96, almost killed her, then killed himself, 'cause he misinterpreted her music & felt possessive of her & that she shouldn't go with a black man- her bf at the time, Goldie- so she felt the past unravel, then she made Homogenic/ new love.
& til 2007 Radiohead hardly ever did a cover song for public consumption, even live. they've done about 5 Neil Young songs once each, but otherwise, there was one Blondie, one Elvis Costello, one Carly Simon, one Tim Buckley, one Magazine, one Can cover, over 15 years. (plus that Wonderwall thing, and a never-bootlegged live cover of REM's So. Central Rain) apparently they always played lots of covers in private but don't like to inflict it on the public. it was nice that they tried though.
it seems heartfelt, and the stumbling piano *really* fits the spirit of the original. they even said it was a first take and they didn't want to over-rehearse it. however, I do feel the recent batch of covers done by Radiohead, maybe because they are songs/artists so dear to him (Neil Young/Portishead/Smiths/New Order/Bjork) didn't really say anything new like the best covers do, but were more paying homage, so the originals will always be better (the New Order one is so damn great though).
Mr Yorke. This is the equivalent to all those wank Radiohead covers on youtube. 2/10. Sorry fella. Bjork means it. This sounds like a poor first attempt with guesswork
I get so emotional listening to this song...I didn't think anyone could make as much of an impact with this song than bjork...then thom came along.....
makes me want to cry at the genius at how he takes this song with such graciousness...showing his respect for other artists....bjork should be proud of thom....
while you are away, my heart comes undone, slowly unravels, in a ball of yarn, the devil collects it, with a grin, our love, our love, in a ball of yarn
