I think you are over analyzing things my friend, This is a sport karate competition, out of all the athletes, Rafael had the most respect. As for real Karate-ka, Karate spirit can be demonstrated in many ways, not just in the dojo. it is all what the person is looking to study.
Of course like most closed minded Karate people, you are judging a person with out knowing them in person. from what I witnessed, the ENTIRE Azerbaijani team demonstrated a great amount of respect to others.
Rafael is not Taunting, He is head faking or trying to lure in an attack from his opponent. His game plan is to expose himself, then counter off the action of the other fighter. it is not a taunt. I believe it is simply a way to make the other fighter think he can attack and get them to punch or lunge in. once they do they fall right in to his strategy.
I was talking to one of his coaches there and he confirmed this to me. They are really well mannered in and out of the ring.
hum... yes you are right... i didn't see it that way....
it's just in all combats that i saw i never saw that strategy... quite clever really...
it's just that only 20% of world «karate» are original karate, and so... most of the videos on utube are from that «karate» associations... but i just found out that i have a friend on your world oraganization and i can now believe that it's an association that sticks to the original principles of karate
@karatekid73 Karate Kid said it right! He is very respectful, Ive met him in person and he is a better sportsman than anything else. There is nothing wrong with having confidence in what you do. Im not saying Kanazawa is a bad guy, but he does have his own organization which is the SKIF which branched from Funakoshi right? Would that me him kind of egotistic? He even has his symbol on Tokaido Gi's. Regardless, Im going to be testing with him in July just because of his reputation.
He is really good. Love the way he changes his style from attacking relaxed to attacking in a more predictable manner. He has understood. Great takedowns also. Still, Id put my coin on Wayne Otto
hes just so good but in the final to be caught by the same technique in quick sucsetion just proves that he isnt unbeatable and is slightly more than a bit cocky :D hes amazing and a second idol to me though
Actually he only got tagged once... i made a boo boo when producing this video.. and duplicated that particular point in the match for about 5 - 6 seconds...oopp.. just to clarify he only got hit once...
i was there in lasvegas the 2007 USA open in cesers place it was great i like the Kazahstain better i was with them for 3 days they are cool i fought in the 11 year old division i got second lost to japan
Question: during the last, championship round vs. the guy who tagged Aghayev twice, why did Rafael go in for his trademark Judo throw AFTER the judge called 'stop'? It looked like the Judge called stop, and then Rafael sneaks in when the fight was stopped. IMO.
can you tel in what minute that happened...because it seems that you refer to minute 7:15 and the judge never stoped the fight he just said no point for anyone but the fight keeps on going.....
In my observation, Aghayev's technique is to get the guy to throw a punch or kick, get him off balance, then take him down and score for a sambon. He also inches you, ever so slowly, to the edge of thr ing, and when you realize where you are, it's too late and you're boxed in. Hence, you throw a punch or kick to defend, off-balance, and then down you go.
I am doing TKD WTF and i have to say TKD and karate have something in common, even though we don't use that much of punches, but we have almost the same stances and the way of fighting. Fighters bouncing for a period of time while planning the attack or counter, than u see fast and unexpected movements, like tiger waiting to attack their victims. U don't see that in Taibox or other MA(without critics).
@muitokaralio TKD and Karate are almost nothing alike. I don't want to rip on TKD because you guys have awesome kicks and martial skills; but if you watch, karate focuses on hard twisting and clean techniques. Tournament taekwondo is too messy and sloppy for me. Now traditional taekwondo is badass. Watch the difference between Aghayev's punching and a TKD competitor's kick. Very different.
It's kinda weired reading some of the comments about who beats who. Good things: Good takedowns, good speed, good intensity which sometimes intimidated his openents. Bad things: While relying on speed, sometimes leaves himself vulnerable as was seen in the final round. Also, poor defense against someone who may rely more on kicking that standing toe to toe. So the key is to look at every fight objectively, take the good things and work on what needs work.
He is one of the best but remember that vandeshrick(junior world champion)and nagasaki(World champion -70kg 2004) have beated aghayev so he is vulnerable too!
Let me tell you something, Aghayev defeated Alex Biamonti in the Final of the European Championship in Moscow 6-1. After, In the Final of the European Championship in Tenerife 2005 he defeated Ivan Leal. In the World Championship in Tampere 2006, Rafael defeated Ivan Leal again, but now 7-0. And... in the last European Championship, Bratislava 2007, He defeated Stefano Maniscalco from Italy!!! What do you think???
Just the Best. He won the last World Championship in Tampere 2006, The University World Championship in New York in 2006 and twice The European Championship Bratislava 2007. And of course, the U.S. Open. The greatest since a year!!!
Wow...very talented fighter!!!

this is not an attitude of a karateca
karate it's not just competion
yes... rafael is good at combat (kumite) but he certanly lacks the respect for the other fellow and so... he lacks the spirit of a real karateca
instead of watching videos of aghayev... watch a real karateca: kancho kanazawa

@karatekid73
yes... maybe i'm over reacting...
but in minute 4:20 like I said before... it looks like he is taunting the adversary...
in the other combats that I saw of him he never did that... so i was a little shocked about that...
i just think that if he was really taunting him it's runs from the principles of karate, it looks like he thinks he's superior to the adversary...
if it isn't what he was doing... then my bad...

@karatekid73 i heard he does this because no one will attack him unless he is open coz they know how his defence is really strong.

Wayne Otto?
This guy could beat any guy from the past and will beat any from the near future.
Biamonti was breakfast for Aghayev :)
Nagaki from Japan and Vandeschrick from Belgium are the only guys who have beat Aghayev in a fair (aka no retarded judges) match.

about Nagaki and Vandeschrick..Aghayev beat them to. ( Vandeschrick on the 2006 WKF Final ..and Nagaki on the 2008 WKF Semifinals.
