i dnt know how mny little side melodies and licks in here that cold become lick hit songs! thile needs to give a yerin sample b4 he gets up on stage. this performance is not humanly possible!
How does that much talent get packed into one body? Thile is insane - I mean that in a good way. I've never seen anybody use a mandolin like that. Jeez. This vid just became one of my top five faves. Thanks very much for sharing this!!
Bouzoukis are normally tuned Cc Ff aa dd with those bottom two courses having the strings an octave apart and the top two courses in unison. There are a ton of alternative tunings for the bouzouki though, but the bottom two courses are always octaves and the top two unisons. A mandocello, alternatively, is tuned CC GG dd aa with all of the courses in unison, and is very rarely put into alternate tunings.
there is a video Mike marshall showed us at the Mandolin symposium that showed, Mike, Chris and hamilton DeHolando, working this tune over and Hamilton gives chris the nod to take the first solo and chris waves it back to Ham and Mike said he was thinkin you don't know who you just nodded off, take the first solo and save yourself, but he nodded it off again it was amazing, three masters, shredding acoustic wonderment!
Ah. I'm glad you posted this. I was going to but I'm weary about posting a lot of Woodsongs clips. I don't know how they feel about their clips being on YouTube. This is one of my favorite performances ever. Chris's solo is ridiculous.
I would by a CD me and all my friends and family of this combo right here! Marshall Cello and Thile on mando. I could listen to it for hours!! Awesome!! Thanks for posting!
Chris' mandolin solo was the best mandolin solo I've ever heard and Mike Marshall's solo was the best mandocello solo.

Damn - it's the Al Dimeola of Mandolin !
or is it Mandocello ?
A Mandolin savant if you will.
The funny thing is - imagine what he could do with an instrument of appropriate size.
This is like watching Beethoven when he was 3 - playing a symphony on one of those little childrens pianos - and being floored by it

does anyone know where i can get a recording of this?
dickass1234 2 years ago
the best way I know would be to download the audio off the Woodsongs archives, then edit it on Audacity or something to get this tune.
monologtube 2 years ago
go to woodsongs website and I think you can download the show! they broadcast every monday I think!

This is just unbelievable. Mike rocks the hell out of that mandocello and Chris is nothing short of a gift from above. This tune is outstanding.

any difference between a bouzouki and that mando cello?
Jack458111 2 years ago
yes... an octave... tuned ADGC.... I think that that is the same as a bouzouki. Basically the same as a Mandola just deeper voice by an octave.
