That's a brilliant explaination, thank you very much for positing. I have a friend who goes through this three times a week and I wanted to learn more about it.
@TheSarahABrown Hey, using a catheter is an option (via subclavian or int.jugular) but it's mostly the very high risk of infection that makes AV fistula the preferred option. The catheter is useful in an emergency though cos you don't have to wait 6 weeks for it to be ready.
Like a number of procedures I have seen here, this one seems to have a rather serious drawback of lasting damage. A fistula is prone to rupture, and at any rate drastically reduces proper blood flow to the target of the original artery.
So WHY voluntarily make one when alternatives exist?
Really? I remember reading that the high change in blood pressure across the artery-vein boundary would cause rupture, especially on the weaker, thinner-walled venous end.
And even so, that still does not help the fact that the blood has been effectively short-circuited, and like the analogy to electronics, drastically reduces supply to the original intended target.
I agree with Spazcrunch. These are very high quality videos that require time and effort to produce. This must be compensated for by the people who would like to use the animation freely.
@peterchowhk i dont think they will since the point of it is so that people wont use it for mass presentations etc...for that you need to buy the software...this is only for people who want to learn or doctors with their patients
Nice animation. You should do a video showing how a kdney transplant is done.

There is a place that does Dialysis near where I live. I never want to have a Dialysis! I'm glad I keep my kidneys healthy :(
And why can't they put people to sleep during the Dialysis ? :/

@1RadicalOne Actually fistulas are very strong and tend to last many years, longer than the graft.
What the fistula does is expand and strengthen the vein connected to the artery making repeated needle insertions easier and with less risk.
People with veins which are not expected to expand to a big enough size or strength are given the graft.
In the graft is where you would insert the second needle, instead of the vein, but grafts tend to clot much more and sometimes cause infections.
