I went to the mall to purchase another hermit crab, the conditions were disgusting, and the store lady even said "some of the crabs moved into the ugly (natural) shells" and she said I should get a crab in a painted shell. Ugh, I hate that place, they also dig up crabs who are molting so they can be seen and bought, they don't care about the crabs, they care about money. And now I'm ranting no I'll shut up now.

I think you can save hermit crabs by buying the painted ones and showing them a regular, natural shell. cause really, if you don't buy the painted ones, there gonna die in the store anyways.. why not give them a chance and let them change their shells..?

i got two hermit crabs with painted shells at the store yesterday the first minut i showd the hermit crab the nateral shell he switched the other one has to wait to switch hes the same size as the four guys i bought to day at a different store ic ant wait till these 60 shells i ordered come in i went to a different pet land and it was a differnet story the guys where in a great tank with a good set up and they only sold ones with nateral shell and they where all active im NEVER going to back

I went to Walmart and bought a big bag of the "decorating" shells. Which, of course, are natural. Went home, boiled them to get any ick out of them, cleaned out the inside with a Q-tip (just inc case walmart washed with with something) and voila! My hermies changed shells very quickly. So, if you need shells, go to Walmart in the decorating department. Just MAKE SURE to boil them and getting any possible contamination or chemical off of them.

My ecology teacher had a hermit crab that had a blue painted shell. Fortunately I took it in to my own care and in 2 minutes of seeing a beautiful natural green shell, he changed. He is now happily living with my 4 other natural shelled hermit crabs. They have been with me for almost 4 years :D

I Got my natural shells form the beach, I Soaked them in that special water you give them for their bathing it. They have ALL Changed form the painted shells to the sea shells!

Do not "rescue" hermit crabs from bad conditions:

They'll just restock with more hermit crabs. Itll cause more harm than good.Buying them gives the false message that they are doing something right.There are better ways to help them than to support stores for doing something wrong.Many animal welfare groups are against rescuing animals from pet stores due to poor conditions.

f hermit crabs have a variety of shells available, some painted and some unpainted, they won't necessarily choose one type or the other. I don't know if certain crab personalities might actually prefer painted or not, but crabs have other standards that they use to choose a shell - obviously, is it the right size... is it damaged... what type of shell is it... some crabs might prefer a slightly looser fit, others might prefer a tight fit...

ok if you have a hermit crab with a painted shell here is what it has been threw: first some people either light or smack them out of there natural shells, next the smack them into a painted shell (the paint is toxic) then they stick them in a box witha bunch of other traumatized crabs and ship them of to another country

What a great idea to let others know about how bad painted shells are for hermit crabs. It's cruel, deadly and entirely unnecessary. SO many usable shells are ruined by paint.

Hermit crabs will do NOT prefer a painted shell and would only take one as a last resort or if forced.

molting is when the hermit crab has to shed his/her exoskeleton(skin)but if you have more than one crab keep all crabs away from the molting one because their skin is very very very soft and they are vulnerable

The only shells that my hermit crabs wore were

natural and didn't wear those shells. Children

have been known to eat lead paint that was

peeling. If I wanted a painted shell I would

get an all ready white shell bleached from the

sun and use food coloring that was natural

like fruit juice. That's natural.
