this is a very nice cover. in case somebody doesn't know, joe strummer was a good friend of lily allen's parents, and her godfather too. so it's very touching she made a cover like this, even tough joe surely went straight to heaven.

The Clash attacked injustice wherever the found it, which is WHY in the (mostly) vapid late 70s and early 80s they were called "The ONLY band that mattered". Only mentioned him since he and Mick wrote it, he sang it on the Clash version, and he's sadly no longer with us. I was lucky enough to catch them on the Combat Rock tour, opening for the Who in Los Angeles. The Who CLAIMED this was their "Farewell Tour" and it seemed to me (at the time) as a passing of the torch.

personally the synthy dance beat element background ruins it for me- the lyrics dont fit the sound-! Clearly this song and this cover by Lily Allen really polarises the audience. I have believed The Clash are one of the best bands ever since they formed, and stil beleive it. I was brought up on a rough council estate and saw him as a hero.
I'm no longer on that estate, have moved away and done reasonably well for myself and the Clash and a few other bands from that era played their part in shaping the attitudes that helped me fight my way out to a better place for me.

I was fortunate to have been brought up in SW London during the late 70s + early 80s. Kings Rd on a Saturday morning and Stamford Brige watching Chelsea in the afternoon.
The real days, when going out really mattered. Never mind, at least Lilly has all her sponsorship deals and no doubt Mick has a plaque up at his public school somewhere.

@jas964 Yes you are so right! I tend to agree with about 99% of what John Rotten says, but he's wrong about Joe Strummer!!! Steve Jones disagrees w/ him as well! He says Joe Strummer was the real thing no matter who he was born to or where he grew up! Joe may have started off as a hippie but he changed into one of the greatest pioneers and legends of music! That's what makes him great! He adapted! That's what intelligent great artists and great people do!!! God bless Joe Strummer & the Clash!!!!

Think you kids are missing the point. Get over the p*ssing contest and listen to the lyrics. The Clash attacked injustice wherever the found it, which is WHY in the (mostly) vapid late 70s and early 80s they were called "The ONLY band that mattered". Getting the message out to as MANY folks as possible, making people THINK rather than follow like sheep is what they stood for. No, Lily is NOT Strummer, but I doubt Joe would mind much, even tho the vid BARELY acknowledges him

@keji1....Thanks for the props. Didn't mean the mention of Joe's lack of screen time as criticism of your vid, it was well done and, as you said, this was Mick's record. Only mentioned him since he and Mick wrote it, he sang it on the Clash version, and he's sadly no longer with us. I was lucky enough to catch them on the Combat Rock tour, opening for the Who in Los Angeles. The Who CLAIMED this was their "Farewell Tour" and it seemed to me (at the time) as a passing of the torch.

@ahclem ..... thank you to m8, your a lucky guy to see the clash, i was going to see them back in 1979 when they came to my home town but none of the boys were going so i didnt want to go on my own (big mistake) thought ok not to worry i`ll see them next time they come to my town, then before i knew it they split up, :( went to see joe strummer and the mescaleros just a few months before he died though, absolutely awesome, joe was a legend.

personally the synthy dance beat element background ruins it for me- the lyrics dont fit the sound-! Its a great song (especially the original clash version) but i think this fails because it loses all its power with the poppy cheesy overproduction- If a new generation wants to find good music the internet and youtube is an open window- you dont need fly by night popstars bringing it to you! I guess Mick needed the cash!

Clearly this song and this cover by Lily Allen really polarises the audience. I have believed The Clash are one of the best bands ever since they formed, and stil beleive it. Lily Allen if anyone has the pedigree to cover this sing, and with Mick Jones, I think does a great job, She brings a fantasic Clash song (with its message) to a generation that never would have otherwise heard it. Mick Jones was happy to do it, I'm sure Joe Strummer would be good with it. Good enough for me!!

Don't want to knock it too much, but the vocal delivery is just kind of devoid of meaning. It's like a well-produced karaoke.
Having said that, this song is so wrapped up by Joe's vocal that it's practically un-coverable, imho.
