For some reason I don't think it is lying that much... It is lying (nuclear fallout lasts a lot longer than 3-4 minutes or whatever it said), but not much.
I think water is a good radiation moderator. Its used in Light Water Reactors (US nuclear) and Heavy Water Reactors (Canada) as both moderator and coolant.
Nuclear fallout does decrease exponentially, but some half-lifes are 1 million years; meaning it will be half gone in 500,000 years. (half-life derp)

Microwave Radiation (The Microwave) causes Cancer. It uses electro-magnetic wavelengths at 25 GHz Frequency. Since it's introduction in 1935, cancer rates has multiplied 10 x's.
Funny. Comparing the harmless radium from the watch with radiation around and inside of you.
If you try to stab someone with a needle it would turn out impossible but a knife will do the job. This type of propaganda is typical and it hasn't stop today. It just became smarter and mor eye-catching.
I'm a child of radiation! I turned out alright! So I have claws instead of hands, and a giant fishtails for legs, that doesn't make me and my third eye any less than the non radiated guy. Did I mention I have two male tools and 4 testicles
The effects of radiation on my sperm made my kid have a 3rd leg! He is one hell of a runner! You'll see he will be in the Olympics someday! My doctor already signed him up for it, he said he is special and should get involved in the Olympics. He is only 10! THANKS RADIATION! ^5
@fxcat123 Hiding inder the bed is what you are supposed to do if the house is on fire. Lay still under the bed with your eyes closed and hope the fire go away. Or was it hide in the attic? Perhaps you are right. Hide in the attic in case of fire, hide under the bed if nuked? Just to be safe, I'm hiding under a bed in the attic in both cases.
@wiseye61 actually, after a nuke explosion, if the blast itself didn't kill you, and it did not destroy the building you are in. You would be well enough to get in your car, and if it stars, drive to Mexico.
You also have to consider that in any realisitic scenario we'd all see the war coming.
As for radiation, I'm a physicist, 98% of the average persons fear is based on urban myth.
@wiseye61 No, in just about two, to three weeks the area will be clear of contamination and ready to be inhabited again. Actually the radiation decays exponentially pretty quick.
@FuckUSAEmpire The deadliest portions of radiation will decay rather quickly, yes. But the area might remain contaminated for decades, even centuries. Keep in mind, that some materials absorb more radiation than others. It might take from two to three weeks just for the fallout to definitely drop but even that is not for sure, as the fallout is taken very high into the atmosphere. There is no real way to tell how long are the effects going to last as there are so many variables.
@LaughinGarry Yes right. But since the introduction of the international accounting standard a period longer than 3 months doesn't matter anyone on the market :) Even the half-life of iodine is outside the time perception horizon of todays deluded business men. Leave alone cesium, cobalt, thorium, americanum, uranium or plutonium. Future generations? What's that?
"I'm only interested in two things: Where is the beer and when do we get paid?" (from F. Zappa's 200 Motels)
@FuckUSAEmpire Exactly. Between 8 days and 4.5 billion years depending on radiation source and type. And of course on the awareness of the people who should live in that area :) If you know shit you can have a pretty good life there. Multiple cancers doesnt matter so much if there is no doctor telling you about it and no medical care destroying you with chemical treatment :)
@wiseye61 10mins before the heat radiation goes away aka when the fireball cools off. Nuclear fallout shouldn't have gotten very far in that time but 3-4 weeks for highly radioactive material to decay making it so instead of sudden death when walking out side if you stay there for a month you'll be a lot more likely to develop cancers.
wait its telling us to comusme or snort radioactive material to prevent its ionising effect?.....were the US gov trying to get people killed in 1950s (if there was a nuclear war)
mad in theory would still fail. Ya cant KILL EVERYTHING... unless you destroyed the whole globe... and dr evil failed when he tried with a nuke on a giant drill. (thank you austin powers)
In fairness to this, even though I'm sure they knew the information was inaccurate, they hadn't studied it as extensively as they have today.
But still. Safe 2 minutes after an explosion? That's ridiculous. I hear 5 weeks is the safe time now. I, a high school student with no significant knowledge of nuclear decay, still think that's pushing it. I'd go 2 months :P
A-Bomb blasts result in a "great rearrangement" That line might be the King of Misinformation- possibly the most irresponsible things I've ever heard in these old prop films- and I've enjoyed many...

It's deeply unfortunate that these were foisted on the public-what an insult to anyone's intelligence. However, the govnt. would never lie to us. lol i love how they lie to make people fell safer, like saying radiation isnt deadly, of course radiation is deadly in large doeses, unless they mean ten years after the bomb has fell, then it will give you severe burns and a slow death from cancer rofl!
"it's safe to go in to the area under the explosion about 2 minutes after it occurs." Ummm... no and we know that because there's a lot of dead ex-servicemen who tried it.
hiroshima and nagasaki killed over a quarter of a million people...mostly civilians.. the reason given was that a full blown invasion would have been to expensive... today people are still dying from the bombings 60+ years ago.. today we have bombs 6 times the power than hirosima. capable of being felt 620 miles away from origin of impact.. mushroom clouds 7 times taller then mt. everest. burning people severely 62 miles away from ground zero. 7.4 seismic energy yeild. 1.4% of the sun's output
Damn.. The world really could have ended at any time back then. At least we'd have warning. nowadays-If the global community is smart enough to realize the signs (my feelings about this North Korea Mess). I swear one photo looked exactly like the area behind Megaton (Fallout 3).
During the Cold War, Russia and the United States built bombs that are 100's of times more powerful than the one dropped on hiroshima. I think you're talking about the Tsar Bomba, the largest nuke ever built (built in Russia). Even Russia thought it was a really stupid idea to build that thing. Something like that would probably wipe out the intended target along with a ton of other unintended targets. It's like using an iron to pop a zit. It's just kinda stupid.
This is not really so far from the truth, althogh it does spin things in a positive way, the human body is able to repair itself from radiation damage quite well in many cases.
Consider the larger picture: they're trying to quell panic during the Cold War over the potential for an attack.
Yea, totally. Because no other country has ever used propaganda, and if they did nobody believed it because they were just so damn smart as a direct effect of them not being Americans.
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not... Propaganda is hugely effective! In the USSR (Communist Russia) when Stalin was in power the only reason he stayed in power and was genuinely worshiped by everyone was through fabrication of support through heavy propaganda, creating the 'Cult of Personality' where people loved him even if he took their husbands, sons, daughters and had them killed for no reason.
Wow, you couldn't tell that I was being sarcastic? Why would anyone believe that no other country has ever used propaganda? You're a sharp one. <-(Sarcastic)
OK, give me one example a point from this PSA which is false that people accepted as true.
Your hair WILL grow back and likely any sterility will NOT be permanent. The fallout from an airburst IS very low.
An interesting example: a single fire-bombing attack on Tokyo in WWII killed a larger percentage of the city population than for either Hiroshima or Nagasaki nuclear bombings.
Yes, bombs are bigger but so are cities and stronger too (reinforced concrete rather than wood and paper).
hahaha .. sure.. nothing wrong with a little radiation folks!.. loose your hair.. Buy a rug! I love how the dismiss Nuclear war, like it's just something you will get over in a while, they need to prosecute the bastards who pushed this shit
Meh, some of the information is quite valid. A lot of people really don't understand radiation and understand the different types and how easily some are blocked. Heck, most people don't know how much radiation a coal plant emits, nor understand the concept of cosmic background radiation.
The bit about the hair and sterility was pretty dang funny though. If you get acute radiation poisoning bad enough to get your hair falling out, you'd best be worried about surviving that.
Que divertido video, y pensar que la gente realmente les creia y confiaba en ellos, es como los videos de escondete debajo de una silla y la explosion nuclear no t hace nada
I love the "harmless as the radium dial on your watch", when those are illegal now.
Screw the duck and cover, I'd rather be fried by the flash than die of cancer weeks or months later. I watched my mum die of cancer and it wasn't pretty. I'll take the initial blast thanks.
Wow! I feel much better about radiation now! Let's build more nukes!
I really liked the part where the guys at the card table in the bomb shelter hear the sound of human civilization coming to an end above them...and then go right on playing cards. LOL!
stars produce all the spectrum of radiation. certain materials do too. but who cares? the video says it doesn't hurt too much and I really trust people in power...
well, some places in the world have natural level of radioactivity (no, i'm not talking of chernobyl here:). in one part of my country there used to be uranium mines. back than government said it was okay, but apparently it was not so okay.
it depends also on your resistance. some people can take larger amount of radioactivity and are okay, some not.

In the USSR (Communist Russia) when Stalin was in power the only reason he stayed in power and was genuinely worshiped by everyone was through fabrication of support through heavy propaganda, creating the 'Cult of Personality' where people loved him even if he took their husbands, sons, daughters and had them killed for no reason.
comicallymishapencar 2 years ago
Wow, you couldn't tell that I was being sarcastic? Why would anyone believe that no other country has ever used propaganda? You're a sharp one. <-(Sarcastic)
doinblow 2 years ago 5
Sorry, I can't tell as there are some pretty stupid people on youtube who would believe such a thing...
Sorry for insulting your intelligence, I was just saying.
comicallymishapencar 2 years ago
Yea, I guess so. I can't argue with that.
doinblow 2 years ago
OK, give me one example a point from this PSA which is false that people accepted as true.
Your hair WILL grow back and likely any sterility will NOT be permanent. The fallout from an airburst IS very low.
An interesting example: a single fire-bombing attack on Tokyo in WWII killed a larger percentage of the city population than for either Hiroshima or Nagasaki nuclear bombings.
Yes, bombs are bigger but so are cities and stronger too (reinforced concrete rather than wood and paper).

reminds me of the "educational videos" from the "Fallout" video game series, awesome.
Fork3 2 years ago
ummm thats because Fallout is set in a parallel future where time stood still in the 50s.
Thus the inspiration comes from the 1950s...

hahaha .. sure.. nothing wrong with a little radiation folks!.. loose your hair.. Buy a rug! I love how the dismiss Nuclear war, like it's just something you will get over in a while, they need to prosecute the bastards who pushed this shit
fstwrtr 3 years ago 3
this is just horrific. If they put this out today, they'd be hanged and slashed into pieces.
HMSwarrior 3 years ago
Meh, some of the information is quite valid. A lot of people really don't understand radiation and understand the different types and how easily some are blocked. Heck, most people don't know how much radiation a coal plant emits, nor understand the concept of cosmic background radiation.
The bit about the hair and sterility was pretty dang funny though. If you get acute radiation poisoning bad enough to get your hair falling out, you'd best be worried about surviving that.

Dont worry, the man on the video said it will grow back. lol.

the scary shit is that I have no doubt that there are still those out there that actually believe we could 'win' a nuclear holocaust.

I love the "harmless as the radium dial on your watch", when those are illegal now.
Screw the duck and cover, I'd rather be fried by the flash than die of cancer weeks or months later. I watched my mum die of cancer and it wasn't pretty. I'll take the initial blast thanks.

WHat is radiation again? u cant be at the same place for acertain time? is there radiation around us or is only in bombs?
trigger305 3 years ago
stars produce all the spectrum of radiation. certain materials do too. but who cares? the video says it doesn't hurt too much and I really trust people in power...
7omnia7 3 years ago 2
well, some places in the world have natural level of radioactivity (no, i'm not talking of chernobyl here:). in one part of my country there used to be uranium mines. back than government said it was okay, but apparently it was not so okay.
it depends also on your resistance. some people can take larger amount of radioactivity and are okay, some not.
