with us, as africans its different we travel freely and leave equally freely , so if its not working for us we will leave and i do know nigerian who are coming back home to live , sometimes its not all about the "bling bling" and "comfort" its about being home and feeling at home.. FELA never left his HOME and never stopped being a nigerian god rest his soul.
Queen, just because I live in America doesn't mean I'm not African. If that is the case, then let's talk about Muhammad Ali. When he first traveled to Africa, he was treated like a King! They respected him because he turned his back on America and got rid of his slave name. So, he depends on the people.
@GTpanik mohammed ali was given the same accord that we would give visitors NORMALLY , he was not "treated like a king" he was treated LIKE A NORMAL HUMAN BEING .. we have RESPECT in whatever culture he happened to go to central africa and was accorded the respect we give to each other..its NORMAL i dont know about slave name all i know is that mohammed ali was treated cordially as is NORMAL.
Music is the Universal language. Just listen to Led Zepplin and you will hear the influence of Southern American Blues that came from African Americans living in the deep South.
I am a Mexican American 20 year old person who has great respect for the black culture and Nigeria. I am a music major and I am forced to study western music in school, when I come home I get really bored of the same things over and over again, but when I listen to Fela, I become engaged in ways I didn't think were possible in music. I don't pretend to know much about Fela's culture, but his music is amazing. Cheers from Texas!
@planetolusola you have done a wonderful job in getting all this classic stuff out there and providing for an audience who would never have known otherwise that their is a world out there which is vibrant and creative .
To answer all. Music is the Universal language. Whether it's Blues from Mississippi, Rock n' roll from Detroit, or Afro-beat from Nigeria, it all speaks the same language... And that language is real freedom and the truest love that you can ever have. Period -end.
i am a white 17 year old kid and i have great respect for black culture and very much appreciate the music. African originated definately has more feel than european. but i dont think Fela would want arguing on who knows about your culture more. but then again i would not understand because i do not belong to that culture, although i do believe we all originated there and are all part of the same consciousness. and i am also VERY ashamed about my history in the enslavement of another people.
Don't worry -- it was your ancestors not you. As long as we remember and correct history's mistakes we don't have to be ashamed of who we are or our background. Everyone makes mistakes; it's up to you, me, and everyone as moral people to fix them. Don't discriminate :)
@watermelonman23 You shouldnt be ashamed of anything. Those who define music by race are fuckin ignorant, dont follow their path, it doesnt mean a fuckin thing. You would learn that eventually by aging, but i felt like telling you that now.
@watermelonman23 yes, there are nigerians who are upset about the way the musical FELA ! presents the culture fela came from which is yoruba culture, and there are those who are upset because no nigerians are in the musical but i look at it this way: it can only be good for those who would never have heard of this great mans music to have exposure to it so they can further explore and see more for themselves, what is the harm in that ? what ever doesnt kill you can only make you stronger.
I wonder, how come if a musician, comedian, or some black person wants to get to the top, he has to perform some homosexual acts, speaking about women, killing someone, sex, and other evil stuff?
@GTpanik I'm actually a proud Black woman, thank you very much. There are many Black writers, musicians and public figures who have gotten "to the top" without doing the crap that you said. Plus, your comment states that you have quite a narrow scope on Black culture.
Yes, we currently have Angie Stone, Jill Scott, Heather Headley, Erykah Badu, and others to name a few who made it. But If what say is narrow scope on our culture, then you need to speak to Jayz, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, and others. Since you want to talk about black culture, how come we are the laughing stock in today's society? How come we don't own anything? No, media, businesses (the vast majority), how come our families can't get along?
How come we don't know our history and don't care about it? We don't talk about slavery in front of whites and all. Are we scaried? And since you want to say that you are a proud black woman, do you perm your hair and put weave on? Just asking.
If you are Nigerian, then you must be an Nigerian who was born here in the Americas. I asked her a question, and you fail to answer. Now you, I don't know about you nor I really care, but if you are proud, then you wouldn't try to act like a white person.
I don't have a afro, tattoos, or piercings. I don't know how to do Voodoo or anything that our ancestors did. Is that making me white? That was a stupid comment you just made on your part. You should be consider as a hypocrite.
I don't know if my family is or not. All I know that I'm an African from the United Snakes of Amerikkka. But I will do a blood test to see where I'm from.
@GTpanik why do you call your country "united snakes of americakka! am curious about that, its not something i have seen on visits to the states personally, to me america is just a country nothing more, nothing less. just a country .
The thing about it is that this not my country. I'm not treated as an American. So, why should I call it my country? It is an Snakeish country due to the Europeans came and made phoney laws, contracts, and killed so many people. That's why I call it the United Snakes of Amerikkka.
@GTpanik but if america is not your country and you resent it isnt it difficult to live there ?. i could never live where i dont feel comfortable in, but the irony is that even if you travel to any african country you will still be treated like an american so that is going to be a problem . am not saying you should not resent your place of birth but you need to come to terms with what it is doing to you as the whites are not going to budge an inch they dont care ,it doesnt register with them.
this released all my stress
