The cat is in heat (looking for a mate) all female cats 'call' like this during this time. One of my mothers Persian cats sounded like she was saying hello and yellow etc.. very strange and quite amusing but not at 3am at the top of her voice!!!
It's definately like it got caught and felt guilty, so the went straight into miaoing. Like we saw the side that cats normally hide from us and only show wen humans aren't looking, like they can probly talk or something. But he got seen by a human so he tried to cover it up and pretended he wasn't barking sort of thing.
I have seen cats do dog things before, I think it was becuase they were good friends of the dog. The kittens panting like their doggy friend who had his tounge hanging out all the time. And I think your cat was barking like a dog and stopped because he/ she saw that you were looking. Just a theory...
