Well regardless in what bb means ...a lot of people said big blinds....and how I explained it being a limit game...and why Chan could lay it down made 100%
I FIND IT SO FUNNY 99% of people who put comments down said he bought in for 10 BIG BLINDS 6K ....it's a 300/600 limit game...300 is the BIG-BLIND = he bought in for 6K =20 BB's...all you guys talk %#^* and can't even add !
For all you people who can't add it's a 300/600 limit game so he did not buy in do 10 BB's it was 20BB's...300 is the Big Blind 2nd it was after the flop so chan 4 bet and Damon 5 bet so that's 2700 + what's in the pot...enemy if Damon only had about 4K left it was limit and maybe chan had no pair no draw "Just bluffing"...so point is its not No-Limit so the pot odd s was there but if chan thought he almost could never win the pot why stick another 4K in the middle.
its a really good movie...but so many plot holes....who the fuck sits down with 10 big blinds at a 300/600 game?! it's not even allowed first of all...lol
He says he folded mostly, so I guess that leaves room for interpreting it as he maybe doubled up once or twice before making his move against Chan, which in turn, would make the hand seem more reasonable.
@JiuJitsuislife Yeah but he says he played 1 hour tight, folding most hands before the hand happens. At this point he has a huge stack so I guess he had some pretty succesfull double ups in that hour.

Whether this is limit or NL, the math is completely fucked.
300-600 limit game: Chan raises the $300 BB to 600, he 3 bets to 900, Chan 4 bets to 1200, and (assuming no cap) he 5 bets to 1500. So now Chan lays down to a 300 raise in a pot already worth at least 2700? His cards aren't worth 9:1 on his money to see a flop?

matt damon should be ashamed for advertising gambling. Oh and oreos are owned by Kraft run by some kike bitch who are fucking up cadburys in the uk, most gambling machines are made by usa firms too. Poker, gambling machines, shitty choc biscuits and sugar saturated pop the US is so beneficial to mankind.
In the DVD special features for this movie they have a commentary track done by 3-4? professional poker players. Talking about this scene they say the poker is plausible (not likely, but plausible) but the dialogue isn't. Apparently asking after a fold if the other guy had it is not cool, and they said Chan would never do it.
Replace Matt Damon with Phil Hellmuth and the other guy with Mrs. Hellmuth - and I bet this is the conversation she has to hear every time he finishes filming poker after dark....... oh except it's probably Tom Dwan not Johnny Chan - and it's not a great play it's a bad beat story, lol.
@vince117 he's not saying he's better than chan. What he's trying to say here is that he can hold his own against him,''I sat with the best in the world. And I won'' not ''I sat with the best in the world. And I was better''
Another proof that the game played is limit is the minimum buy-in. Typically, the minimum buy-in for a limit game is 20 big blinds, or $6000 for a 300-600 game. Also, in limit, 300-600 does NOT mean blinds are 300-600, it means that bets are in increments of 300 preflop and flop and 600 on the turn and river. Small blind is 1/2 the bet and the big blind the full bet. In this case, blinds are 150 and 300. Hence, Matt had the minimum buy-in to play 300-600 limit.
lol this is the only stupid part of the movie. i thought it was agood movie but this was unneeded. But tbh it only affects those who play poker and are looking for something to criticize
@mattdistad 1) When we say 300-600, it's usually Limit. 2) If it was on the turn, a 5-bet would be $3000, since 5x600 = $3000. Therefore At minimum, Matt would have already invested $300 in the pot to make the call. Possibly $600 or $900 invested after the flop. Therefore Matt would have enough chips to make the play. 3) In Limit, the betting is capped to 4 bets unless it's heads up, where it's typically no cap. A bet beyond the cap gives a very strong tell about the player's strength of a hand.
@earti I thought of this, but the problem here is that if Matt 5 bet it to $1500, chan already has $1200 in for a pot of $2700, so he is getting 9 to 1 to call. No hand is a 9 to 1 dog preflop, so a fold here would be ridiculous. Now if we assume this is no limit, a fold here might actually make sense, but then we're back to the problem of a $6k short stack being all in already.
In Limit there's more than just pot odds. As a Dealer for 5-10 and 10-20 at a charity casino there, are situations where regulars will fold post-flop after a $10 bet in $200 pot, or even fold following a bet on the river, knowing that one of the players fished their way to the nuts (or close to it). Over the course of a session, making these crying calls will make a huge dent in your stack. Although Chan had 9-1 odds to call, he can put Matt on the nuts and realize he's drawing thin.
@mattdistad Also, doing this play is better suited on the turn where the limits are doubled, intensifying these plays. I see the majority of the plays happen on the turn since they can build the pot twice as fast compared to the flop and most players want will call on the flop if they can improve their draw options on the turn. By the way. the play is done post-flop (best on the turn). Other than the occasional blind steal or split, about 99% of the hands played go post-flop in Limit.
@mattdistad Cannot be pre-flop. You cannot 5-bet preflop since it's not Heads Up where there's no cap (cap is 4), and when it's heads up at the start of a round. If it was preflop, there would be a cap since all the players started with cards. There's comminity cards shown in the scene with chips in the middle (although a bit exaggerated, but hey, it's a movie). Only thing that doens't make sense is Chan's decision apply aggressive pressure to matt's short stack not knowing he'll fight back.
dude broke like 3 or 4 "rounder" ethical codes as well as BR management: 1.) don't play with money you don't have 2.) hit and run is like, a no-no and 3.) don't let emotion get in the way (i.e. "I had to know if I could sit with the best." -- still, great movie. Hindsight suggests otherwise -- especially after all the poker books and info viewers have now.
The piece of information in the story that is vital is that he said he folded for an hour. If not all his hands then 99% of them. If this were a real situation and story, Johnny Chan would have folded because at that point you can only put someone on A's K's and maybe AK suited. The only thing remarkable about this story is that he sat down at a 300/600 with only 10 BB.
What I dont get is how he can sitt for an hour at a 300/600 table with only 6000 buyin. He would ante down waay if he just folds for an hours, he would be broke by the ante and have no chance at all do fourbet vs jonny. Never made sense to me.
AHAHA so let me get this straight chan opens for 1200, damon makes a min raise to 2400, chan decides to 4 bet to 4800. Damon snuffs it out and 5 bets with his rags going all in for 6000. Having to call 1200$ to win 12,000$ Chan decides 10-1 odds aren't good enough and lays it down lol.
It was a little diffrent Damon had more then 6k he started with that amount 1 hour or so before he chiped up a bit. When Chan started betting the bets were 600 not 1200.
@mattwright71 considering damon 5 bets they aren't playing limit - it has to be no limit. at a 3/6 game the min bet is 12. Unless its postflop which someone pointed out it might be. but i hardly expect johnny chan to be min betting ever. Either way even if he chipped up to lets say 12k double his stack he would have 20big blinds... no one 4bet folds in that situation... ever, its an insult to johnny chan.
It was limit and in limit poker ther eis no cap on raises if there were 3 people in a ahand it would be capped at 4.
they were playing back then there was hardly any no limit games with 300-600 limits. the big blind and minuim bet pref lop and on the flop is 300 then on the turn and river is 600. There is a lot of things you have to take into consideration that would make chan fold.
1 damon was playing really tight for a hour
2 it looked like there was only 4 cards on the board
@mattwright71 ahh i stand corrected, i always thought there was a 4bet limit in limit poker. that means this is actually possible for sure. its still tough to believe that you would 4 bet bluff especially in limit poker. but i guess we'd have to see how the hand played out.
@SurvivingTheHorizon You got it wrong. This is not 60K NL (no limit) with blinds at 300 600.
This is 300/600 limit holdem - meaning preflop anf flop bets are 300, bet size increases to 600 on the turn and river. So preflop Chan makes it 600, Damon raises to 900, Chan 4bets to 1200, Damon 5bets to 1500. Still, at this point, Chan gets 9:1 odds to call, so it doesn' make sense anyway, as it makes sense to call even with the most severely dominated hands (like AK vs AA)
@SurvivingTheHorizon I think this story only makes sense if it's NL, and it's still silly, but there's one thing you might be missing. Perhaps Damon won a little bit playing tight for a few hours. Perhaps he was up to 10k+. The story certainly makes no sense if he only has 10 BBs.
@SurvivingTheHorizon sounds pretty weird yes but actually if chan would raise to 1200 the min raise would be to 1800 and chan cauld then raise to 2400. pros never min raise but there could have been only less than 8k in the pot and 3600 more for johnny to call
@SurvivingTheHorizon LMGDAO thats what i always thought! Noway any person in the world will lay 1,200 more down after a 3 bet to a 10k pot ...oh priceless stuff!!!
you can play tight for 1 hour. And still be at 6K. He probably made some profit. Maybe he had 10K? 12K? And heh. They didn't mention this was a limit game either.
Could have been nl... (Plus he started with 6K) 1 hours later something probably changed... Anyhow. THis is how i see it.
@SurvivingTheHorizon First...they are playing Limit....so, the raise is 1200....he reraises to 1800...re raises to 2400....he came back for 3000.....another 3000 behind or so....
@mikeeman12 not quite. they're playing 300-600. the blinds woulda been $150-$300 (the 300-600 in limit is referring to bet sizes in each of the betting rounds). chans opening raise woulda been from 300 to 600, mike makes it 900, chan makes it 1200, mike made it 1500. with 4500 behind. mikes story also implies he thinks johnny chan is bluffing and that he's selling the idea to johnny that he's not going anywhere. a player like johnny chan would know to lay it down at that point.
@SurvivingTheHorizon This could have been avoided if they had just made it $12,000 that he sat down with. He would still be cripplingly shortstacked at a 300/600 NL table, but that would be a big enough shove to get a good player off a marginal hand.
@SurvivingTheHorizon He was at the table for an hour. He could have made some money changing the money figures you're throwing around and the pot odds at the end. Look at the stack in front of him- He's got more than 6k right there.
@SurvivingTheHorizon, He would've had to of gained some chips before the hand. he says he had been playing for an hour when it happened. He would've had to of doubled up at least twice to even be able to play like he said and scare away Chan probably, but logic was never Rounders' strong suit.
@SurvivingTheHorizon Ive wondered this forever. BUT, if you look at the table it looks like there is a board out there. But I can't tell if that's just a logo on the table?
Either way you'd think Chan (or whomever was their poker consultant) would say "hey, this makes no sense."
So, for the sake of my sanity, I'm going with that was a flop, chan had a low pair, wanted to make sure mike mcd REALLY hit, and then he folded....or at least that's what I tell myself
@SurvivingTheHorizon Actually he states they are playing 300-600. and that he sits with $6k. If it were 300-600 nl game, i imagine the buy in would be much higher. Also around the time this movie was made, the only nl played was usually in tournaments, and in big side games during WSOP. You are right though, Chan would be getting 9-1 to call the 300, so even if MM turned his hand face up and had AA, Chan should call. I guess it makes a better story for the movie the other way.
It's called "to fold" - not "to muck".

Poker, gambling machines, shitty choc biscuits and sugar saturated pop the US is so beneficial to mankind.

blaupunkt600 1 year ago
In the DVD special features for this movie they have a commentary track done by 3-4? professional poker players. Talking about this scene they say the poker is plausible (not likely, but plausible) but the dialogue isn't. Apparently asking after a fold if the other guy had it is not cool, and they said Chan would never do it.

So he short stacked hit n run the best in the world, dayum.

LOL, like winning one hand against Johnny Chan means that he is better than Johnny Chan. Seriously, it's a good movie, but it's for donks
vince117 1 year ago
@vince117 he's not saying he's better than chan. What he's trying to say here is that he can hold his own against him,''I sat with the best in the world. And I won'' not ''I sat with the best in the world. And I was better''
Sandwolf666 1 year ago

But tbh it only affects those who play poker and are looking for something to criticize

how do you 5-bet at 300/600 with a stack of 6000 and not be all in?
mattdistad 1 year ago
@mattdistad LOL yeah! xD
weefeatures 1 year ago
@mattdistad 1) When we say 300-600, it's usually Limit. 2) If it was on the turn, a 5-bet would be $3000, since 5x600 = $3000. Therefore At minimum, Matt would have already invested $300 in the pot to make the call. Possibly $600 or $900 invested after the flop. Therefore Matt would have enough chips to make the play. 3) In Limit, the betting is capped to 4 bets unless it's heads up, where it's typically no cap. A bet beyond the cap gives a very strong tell about the player's strength of a hand.
earti 1 year ago
@earti I thought of this, but the problem here is that if Matt 5 bet it to $1500, chan already has $1200 in for a pot of $2700, so he is getting 9 to 1 to call. No hand is a 9 to 1 dog preflop, so a fold here would be ridiculous. Now if we assume this is no limit, a fold here might actually make sense, but then we're back to the problem of a $6k short stack being all in already.
mattdistad 1 year ago
In Limit there's more than just pot odds. As a Dealer for 5-10 and 10-20 at a charity casino there, are situations where regulars will fold post-flop after a $10 bet in $200 pot, or even fold following a bet on the river, knowing that one of the players fished their way to the nuts (or close to it). Over the course of a session, making these crying calls will make a huge dent in your stack. Although Chan had 9-1 odds to call, he can put Matt on the nuts and realize he's drawing thin.
earti 1 year ago
@mattdistad Also, doing this play is better suited on the turn where the limits are doubled, intensifying these plays. I see the majority of the plays happen on the turn since they can build the pot twice as fast compared to the flop and most players want will call on the flop if they can improve their draw options on the turn. By the way. the play is done post-flop (best on the turn). Other than the occasional blind steal or split, about 99% of the hands played go post-flop in Limit.
earti 1 year ago
@earti I think it's pretty clear that all the action takes place pre-flop, which is why the story makes no sense...
mattdistad 1 year ago
@mattdistad Cannot be pre-flop. You cannot 5-bet preflop since it's not Heads Up where there's no cap (cap is 4), and when it's heads up at the start of a round. If it was preflop, there would be a cap since all the players started with cards. There's comminity cards shown in the scene with chips in the middle (although a bit exaggerated, but hey, it's a movie). Only thing that doens't make sense is Chan's decision apply aggressive pressure to matt's short stack not knowing he'll fight back.
earti 1 year ago
dude broke like 3 or 4 "rounder" ethical codes as well as BR management: 1.) don't play with money you don't have 2.) hit and run is like, a no-no and 3.) don't let emotion get in the way (i.e. "I had to know if I could sit with the best." -- still, great movie. Hindsight suggests otherwise -- especially after all the poker books and info viewers have now.

He "sat there for an hour and folded mostly". Guessing he built his stack up a bit..
damnablefate 11 months ago 2
The piece of information in the story that is vital is that he said he folded for an hour. If not all his hands then 99% of them. If this were a real situation and story, Johnny Chan would have folded because at that point you can only put someone on A's K's and maybe AK suited. The only thing remarkable about this story is that he sat down at a 300/600 with only 10 BB.
spikenn616 1 year ago
What I dont get is how he can sitt for an hour at a 300/600 table with only 6000 buyin. He would ante down waay if he just folds for an hours, he would be broke by the ante and have no chance at all do fourbet vs jonny. Never made sense to me.
Heimunen 1 year ago
Usually on limit game there is no ante just the big and small blind in this case 300-600.
mattwright71 1 year ago
EPIC.
that is all...
TheAndreGrant 1 year ago
AHAHA so let me get this straight chan opens for 1200, damon makes a min raise to 2400, chan decides to 4 bet to 4800. Damon snuffs it out and 5 bets with his rags going all in for 6000. Having to call 1200$ to win 12,000$ Chan decides 10-1 odds aren't good enough and lays it down lol.
SurvivingTheHorizon 1 year ago 81
@SurvivingTheHorizon action wasn't based on preflop. the flop was already dealt as you can see the cards on the table.
4thwonder 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon rofl lololololol muahahahhahaha. good observation. chan cant lay down now. hes got alot more then that investested
sneak108 1 year ago
It was a little diffrent Damon had more then 6k he started with that amount 1 hour or so before he chiped up a bit. When Chan started betting the bets were 600 not 1200.
mattwright71 1 year ago
@mattwright71 considering damon 5 bets they aren't playing limit - it has to be no limit. at a 3/6 game the min bet is 12. Unless its postflop which someone pointed out it might be. but i hardly expect johnny chan to be min betting ever. Either way even if he chipped up to lets say 12k double his stack he would have 20big blinds... no one 4bet folds in that situation... ever, its an insult to johnny chan.
SurvivingTheHorizon 1 year ago
It was limit and in limit poker ther eis no cap on raises if there were 3 people in a ahand it would be capped at 4.
they were playing back then there was hardly any no limit games with 300-600 limits. the big blind and minuim bet pref lop and on the flop is 300 then on the turn and river is 600. There is a lot of things you have to take into consideration that would make chan fold.
1 damon was playing really tight for a hour
2 it looked like there was only 4 cards on the board
mattwright71 1 year ago
so it might cost Chan more then 1 more bet.
3 Chan might have been bluffing himself which if he was there is no way he can call with being raised twice by a tight player.
mattwright71 1 year ago
@mattwright71 ahh i stand corrected, i always thought there was a 4bet limit in limit poker. that means this is actually possible for sure. its still tough to believe that you would 4 bet bluff especially in limit poker. but i guess we'd have to see how the hand played out.
SurvivingTheHorizon 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon You got it wrong. This is not 60K NL (no limit) with blinds at 300 600.
This is 300/600 limit holdem - meaning preflop anf flop bets are 300, bet size increases to 600 on the turn and river. So preflop Chan makes it 600, Damon raises to 900, Chan 4bets to 1200, Damon 5bets to 1500. Still, at this point, Chan gets 9:1 odds to call, so it doesn' make sense anyway, as it makes sense to call even with the most severely dominated hands (like AK vs AA)
vince117 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon I think this story only makes sense if it's NL, and it's still silly, but there's one thing you might be missing. Perhaps Damon won a little bit playing tight for a few hours. Perhaps he was up to 10k+. The story certainly makes no sense if he only has 10 BBs.
stinky472 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon he played for an hour, tight, and i'm sure he made some cash along. so he had more tha 6K
Lado1677 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon sounds pretty weird yes but actually if chan would raise to 1200 the min raise would be to 1800 and chan cauld then raise to 2400. pros never min raise but there could have been only less than 8k in the pot and 3600 more for johnny to call
finnfisu 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon yeah that makes sense lol.

@SurvivingTheHorizon LMGDAO thats what i always thought! Noway any person in the world will lay 1,200 more down after a 3 bet to a 10k pot ...oh priceless stuff!!!

@SurvivingTheHorizon Genius... Ok about the odd your right. BUt i don't think
you can play tight for 1 hour. And still be at 6K. He probably made some profit. Maybe he had 10K? 12K? And heh. They didn't mention this was a limit game either.
Could have been nl... (Plus he started with 6K) 1 hours later something probably changed... Anyhow. THis is how i see it.

mikeeman12 1 year ago
@mikeeman12 ya someone pointed that out... also that there is a flop, can't remember if there's a turn though.
SurvivingTheHorizon 1 year ago
@mikeeman12 not quite. they're playing 300-600. the blinds woulda been $150-$300 (the 300-600 in limit is referring to bet sizes in each of the betting rounds). chans opening raise woulda been from 300 to 600, mike makes it 900, chan makes it 1200, mike made it 1500. with 4500 behind. mikes story also implies he thinks johnny chan is bluffing and that he's selling the idea to johnny that he's not going anywhere. a player like johnny chan would know to lay it down at that point.
satsujin22 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon Obviously not believable in todays poker community, but when the movie aired, people were rather clueless..
mmnmnmmmnmmn 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon This could have been avoided if they had just made it $12,000 that he sat down with. He would still be cripplingly shortstacked at a 300/600 NL table, but that would be a big enough shove to get a good player off a marginal hand.
terracottapie 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon He was at the table for an hour. He could have made some money changing the money figures you're throwing around and the pot odds at the end. Look at the stack in front of him- He's got more than 6k right there.
redeath121 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon Actually, min bets would be in increments of $600, thus a 5 bet could be as low as $3000. Still a horrible laydown by Chan.
meshanti 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon, He would've had to of gained some chips before the hand. he says he had been playing for an hour when it happened. He would've had to of doubled up at least twice to even be able to play like he said and scare away Chan probably, but logic was never Rounders' strong suit.
abermen 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon Ive wondered this forever. BUT, if you look at the table it looks like there is a board out there. But I can't tell if that's just a logo on the table?
Either way you'd think Chan (or whomever was their poker consultant) would say "hey, this makes no sense."
So, for the sake of my sanity, I'm going with that was a flop, chan had a low pair, wanted to make sure mike mcd REALLY hit, and then he folded....or at least that's what I tell myself
ilovebrandnewcarpets 1 year ago
@SurvivingTheHorizon Actually he states they are playing 300-600. and that he sits with $6k. If it were 300-600 nl game, i imagine the buy in would be much higher. Also around the time this movie was made, the only nl played was usually in tournaments, and in big side games during WSOP. You are right though, Chan would be getting 9-1 to call the 300, so even if MM turned his hand face up and had AA, Chan should call. I guess it makes a better story for the movie the other way.
