GPS units are useless out in the middle of nowwhere when you don't have a map. You know exactly where you are but you just have no idea where "where" is.

not unless you are milatary you can get one that works any wear how else do they track ships and planes

@canballable GPS units do not track ships or planes. They obtain satellite signals and through mathematics determine your position on the face of the earth to an accuracy of 100 feet or less.

@tanois Of course you know. GPS units have programmable way points and mapping. It's better than a map because, a map tells you where everything is, except you, whereas the GPS also has a map and tells you where everything is, including yourself. Why would would you think that's useless?

@tanois Have you ever actually USED a GPS? It appears not. You enter a destination, and they direct you to it. If you are hiking, if nothing else, save the position you started at, and it can return you to that spot. Even the oldest ones, like my Garmin 48, which is from the mid-90's, can do that.
