there is a law in America just about in every state that's called the shopkeepers privilege. It basically means that if there is proof of an occurrence of shoplifting in a privately owned establishment...the owner's have the right to detain that person with any necessary but non deadly force. Yes the kid trying to help maybe wasn't the smartest move. That doesn't compare to anybody who's stupid enough to steal. If they needed something, they find a legal way to get the item.
