But you have to remember, we're not culling an entire species (or special sub-species). We introduced our livestock into an area which didn't have mammals via artificial means. Its not like the goats are an endangered species either. If you feel more for the goats than the tortoises, you should be a vegetarian and boycotting meat farms instead of posting sweeping statements. The goat (as an artificial human-protected species) is not threatened to extinction.

Have you EVER tried to herd an unknown number of animals across many acres of land? You don't want to use horses either because you will need to feed and water horses in protected land. The goats have roamed wild and will contain parasites as well. The last thing you want to give impoverished people is a dose of half-putrid meat. The rotting carcasses will, in time, return nutrients to the land which are needed for the plants to regrow, especially since vegetation has already been stripped bare.

3) The plants leech nutrients from soil, the goats eat the plants, leaving the land barren, BUT if you take the goats elsewhere who's going to make the land fertile again for plants to grow for tortoises?! Leave things to their natural process. Shoot the goats, let them decompose and release some nutrients back into the native soil. This will kick the decomposition and refertilization process back into place so that new plants can grow.

What are you talking about? I have earlier comments on page three, I KNOW Humans brought the goats. But the goats have eaten nutrients from the galapagos soil. If we try to be 'humane' and ship the goats to another country (NOT economically feasible), the soil will not be able to grow any food for the tortoises, it would have been leeched of nutrients.

They will probably return to pick up a few bodies, because leaving them to decompose in such numbers will also upset the biodiversity there. A body can take up to a year to decompose, and leaves behind acids and chemicals that are not found in natural soil.

This is the only time I've enjoyed seeing animals shot from a helicopter.  Just get rid of the pests. It would be better if they ate the goats, but if for some reason that's not practical so be it. Livestock, grazing animals have cause astronomical destruction worldwide for hundreds of years.

Though you have to remember those that introduced the goats may be ineducated people who are poor and only want to feed their family comfortably. Say a farmy with fifty goats, leaves ten of them on an island hoping they would breed... its not right, but the farmer is ignorantly innocent.
