I must have been living in an alternate universe at the time. I moved to 46th and 9th in 1976. i was 17 at the time, and consider those next 5 years living in NY the most thrilling and exciting of my life. There may have been a depression, but I was anything but depressed!
I wish we could have more respect for the people who actually lived through it and stuck by their city despite all the hardship- even when everyone else was against us. We also had the most creative collection of people at the time, great things came out of the city in the midst of it all.
The Jimmy Carter years sucked. It improved due to Reagan. See, they didn't get the stupid Federal bailout but were able to use the private sector and imagination and initiative to turn things around WITHOUT taxpayer money. Another CONSERVATIVE success story.
@magiccasements Carter years ruled: bottom line, tramps, cbgb's, maxies...reagan years were the start of the bland, crass '80's.....music sucked, hair sucked, attitudes sucked
I had to laugh when the reporter started walking and I realized she was outside in the wintertime without a jacket on. It's okay to wear a jacket, you know? Good reporters stay warm!
Thank you for your comment. You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately I got way behind schedule and had to do the video parts of the narration in basically one take.
Good research, my constructive criticism is to rehearse reading your copy. In this day and age, with advanced editing capabilities, there is no reason to get it absolutely perfect.
What else can I say..other than you've provided us here with a brilliant and highly detailed historical account and overview of this aspect of The Big Apple...my home town. Yes,I LOVE New York!
I miss New York the way it was in the glorious 70s! To hell with development and all these rich people flaunting their garbage and snobbery in our faces! Back in the 70s people were much freer than today. We need to bring people back down to earth, control prices, and bring back graffiti on the subways. Maybe that will make people more human again instead of selfish and cynical, a deadly ghost of the 80s, 90' and still smells rotten today. Bring back bellbottoms and platform shoes! Dig?
I love the 70s man! Wish we could go back to those days when we didn't give these modern-day snobs from Manhattan the chance to flaunt their rich garbage in our faces, where prices were still controlled, and when graffiti on the subways reigned supreme. To hell with development! I want NYC back to the way it was in the beautiful 1970s! You all dig THAT?!
Interesting take on NYC history in the latter part of the 20th century. Straight and to the point; a well-done presentation from an intelligent and determined high schooler! Impeccable docu indeed!!
I think you should not have anything to do with being the V.O. or the director. However i have to say I live in NY and this was really interesting, and depspite my nausea, I couldnt stop watching/listening. You should remake this when you get better at reading copy and a tripod to take film of *without shaking* articles and pictures, and audio consistency. Maybe journalism?
This campaign was the beginning of the END for the city as a vital and creative place to live. NO place can survive on tourism alone and retain its character. Of course there were, and are, a lot of other economic factors at play that have turned NYC into a big generic shopping mall, but this was its symbolic beginning.
New York City will always be a vital and creative place to live! Maybe in Time's Square its like a shopping mall (better than porno theaters)- but LOOK DEEPER, the city is as alive and exciting as ever before. Its little neighborhood still thrive with their unique character.
Times Square was probably beyond redemption in the form it existed, so yeah, it's Disneyland now but that might be the best we can do. Of more concern is the fact that much of the rest of the city is emulating Times Square's "success". Have you shopped in Soho lately?
if you can't afford to clean the streets then you don't have to worry about the effect of tourism - there is alot about NYC that I liked in 1975 but lets face it the city was in bad shape
Things were looking preaty bad back in the 70's, the blackout,Son of Sam and the high cost of living. That's why alot of us left but God Bless them they turned it around.

emily-your a little off as to the origin.
-the first commercial was for upstate/long Island vacations
-Milton designed the logo the second year of the campaign. the first year just used the words "I Love New York"
-Hugh Carey started campaign to help get Mario Cuomo elected

Ford was right not to bail out New York City. Governor Hugh Carey refused to bail out the city unless they agreed to end rent control.
These guys wouldn't give New York any money unless they agreed to give something back.

Where'd you get the "ILNY" Night Shows and Tours commercial from?
Ian16545 3 years ago
I got it off YouTube several years ago. Not sure if it's still on. Try keywords I Love New York Ad Campaign.
RobertWhiting 3 years ago
The ad campaign was originally designed for all of New York State. New York City STOLE IT.
Only now is the state tourism board reclaiming the slogan for the STATE it was intended for.
