Glen Royer here, just want to say that the Northern Pikes were THE band of the day hands down!!! they got signed on the strengh of their great live show and the catchy songs, case closed. They were and still are in my opinion one of the BEST bands to ever come out of Canada and for me personally ( and i am sure i speak for most if not all of the members of Greenhouse and New Concept) were an inspiration for our OWN live performances and songwriting back in the day.Thank you guys, your still #1
i hate how canadian bands are soooooo underrated. some shitty pop singers like adele or bruno mars are sooo "popular" but their music sucks. Fuck shitty modern pop music!
I have always loved this song. I saw them live, opening up for Peter Frampton many years ago and I thought they sounded really good. I am also surprised they were never really heard of outside of Canada.
BTW, the lead singer in this video always reminded me of Emelio Estevez in the Breakfast Club. Just saying...
I seen them a few times in clubs. They never got "respect" because their live shows had poor vocal quality. I love the pikes don't get me wrong. They just didn't get it done live... and it cost them.
listen to that old analog sound on a 128 mixer..nothing else sounds like that!..thx for posting the original release..no digital..it sounds great on headphones!!!
If you have the chance, go check out the Live version of "Teenland" on the 1993 compact disc "Gig". At 3:33 in the song, the guys roll into a spoken/guitar backed version of "Young Man Blues" which leads directly into the BRILLIANT cover segment of the guitar-laden "(Ghost) Riders In The Sky". Wow !! Bryan delivers some fierce guitar work here !! Truly a gem to be found on the CD and within this classic song !!
I agree, enialbsitruc, they were successful but not as successful as they deserved to be. I met the guys just for a few minutes in Halifax, NS after a show, and they were very down to earth and friendly. Yes, long live the Pikes!
Actually, it's Merl Bryck on lead vocals. Now that he is no longer with the Pikes, Jay Semko sings this one when they perform it live. He (Jay) also sang lead on it long before it ended up on the Pikes debut album, but the version that the fans know from the video, album, single, and most tours (except recently since Merl left) is with Merl Bryck singing lead.
@themiff I do remember seeing their She Ain't Pretty video on The Nashville Network in the early 90's,but Northern Pikes had so much more deeper material than that.
It is Jay on the bass, Bryan on the lead, and neither on lead vocals. That is Merl Bryck on lead vocals. Thats one of the reasons why this band was so special-3 good vocalists. jay wrote most of the songs, Bryan had that rippin' lead guitar, and Merl could really sing. But Jay was the John Lennon of the band, definitely. I am from their home town, and it's a shame they never got the respect they deserved. Long live the Pikes!!!!!
@enialbsitruc Thanks for the review. I grew up with them, but didn't appreciate them then. I love them now, though. I grew up in Montreal where many great Canadian singers, songwriters and bands have emerged, but I think I can understand how it nuar feel when something great emerges from your home town regardless of its size.
Great Band , Weren't They ?! Good New Canadian Sound in the mid 80's....Got The "lime Green" Edition of their following album wich was recorded live in a studio... (this means that the final take of each songs that you get on this album was played as it is in studio) later sound is polished and then Pressed on tape... By the way "Things I do for Money" should be a canadian classic..Wonderfull Guitar Sound from those Yamaha Twin Effect Amplifiers...great vid by the way.
they opened for bowie once. they had three lead singers -- this guy was on bass -- he does look alot like emilio estevez ! this is one of their best ones. sad innocent song, really. totally sums up small-town canadian life in the 80's
These guys are awesome. I got them live about a year or 2 ago at a local baseball stadium as part of a promotion for the baseball club. They haven't lost anything. They rocked out, big time.
I'll never figure out why, as cinchbassist puts it, such solid Canadian talent too often goes unnoticed in the States. These guys put out solid hits.
Northern Pikes had such a good solid rock sound. It's a shame that a lot of our homegrown Canadian talent goes unnoticed in the States. thesoundradio. com cinchband
This band is another example along with Rush, The Tragically Hip, Voivod and many others too many to mention is why Canada has, per capita, the most talent anywhere.
Now i know why Saskatchewan is so great to be from, we have a that big sky with sunshine...lol. I am such a dork. I just noticed that in some of the Pikes videos they feature the famous 'living skies' of saskatchewan...i'm showing sum luv for sask...lol
Oh my god!! Loved this song back then. Odd though it had a mid90's feel for it looking back. I bet if they had released it in 94 in the grunge time, it would have made a bigger hit. I miss the Canadian 80's stuff!!Thanks kurdtss!!
Great song off Big Blue Sky. Things I Do For Money is still my favourite from that that release, but this is the song that introduced the Pikes to Canada...and the world. Thanls again!

Jay Semko on vocals.
I get a kind of creepy sad feeling whenever I hear these guys. One of the best Canadian bands, but never got as big as they deserved to.
The 80's and 90's had so many great Canadian talents. I may be out of touch, but who do we have now?
