I was talking to a magician today and he said that the coins are behind the chair and there is a mirror in the tank and when he steps on a peddle it goes down allowing the fish to get out
because i saw this trick on tv the other night and straight away came on here to watch it, both of the audience members did the same movements and expressions that allowed teller do do the trick the exact same way.
yeah i know that teller doesnt need an actor for it. but i know that they use one. mabye so the way the trick is done isnt revealed to a random audience member
@jacko1423 Haha, you may be right. I just saw it on TV for the Royal Variety Show in the UK and the audience member chosen also had glasses. Maybe more to do with the showing off with the glasses lenses-coin bit. Either way, mad respect for these two... absolute genius!
the only conclusion i can get to is that the water box thingy isn't transparent but instead it has some kind of screen on it that shows stuff... it might be full of coins and penn could be controlling the screen
Teller does that on one of the Penn and Teller: Fool Us episodes. He also reviles it in another YouTube video but I won't say what it's called otherwise I willed probably get in trouble.
@CODcollections Obviously the coins are produced by (amazing) sleight of hand, some produced from pockets, behind the chair etc. the goldfish is different however, but i don't want to spoil it for you, i've seen this trick several times and even though i know how it's done, i still always gasp a little at that part, just truly beautiful magic.
throughout the main body of this routine, the viewers are laughing and clapping at a display of teller's unsurpassed talent as an illusionist and performer. but listen when the goldfish appear -- the entire audience gasps involuntarily. to me, that moment is where magic truly lies, when expectations are suddenly upended and a beautiful, dazzling act takes your breath away.
i've seen penn & teller perform twice at the rio in las vegas. i can't recommend their act highly enough.
@Leannehugspeople Watch your step Marsha, there's not a reason on Earth for you to own the Ed Sullivan theatre. (presumably referring to the fact if she'd trip she's likely to sue...)
I heard Ricky Jay first taught Teller how to do Sleight Of Hands, and Teller just mastered and created his own technique. Not sure if it's true or not, I just read it somewhere. So if anyone has the answer to that, I'd really appreciate it. Ricky Jay, Penn & Teller are my favorite magicians.
Many of you may know how this is done...but the magic is in the doing. Teller is brilliant in his delivery and it should be enjoyed. Knowing how it is done and doing it are very different things.
I know when I hit a key on a piano that a hammer raises, hits a string and a note comes out...but it doesn't make me Mozart.
@stujoce Best comparison ever. It really is one thing to be able to say you can do something, but a whole different thing entirely to be able to do that particular something well, or in this case, beautifully.
@stujoce Im 15 And ive practiced this trick. I know how it is done. And i still cant figure it out. Even with the coin dropper i dont get how he can hide all those coins in his hand. And the fish blew my fuckin mind.
can anyone explain how he catches the coin in the air? googling tells me to hide the coin between the thumb and palm. @ 1.49 his palm looks empty though
There's a talk he gave at some symposium - a clip is on YouTube somewhere, look for it - where he does a similar illusion without the fish but explains it.
The tank is split in two with a mirror down the middle. Every time he puts both hands in the water, hes putting one behind the mirror but because it's a mirror it looks like they're both visible. That's where he gets the coins from and that's where the goldfish are. He scoops over the top of the mirror. When he's pulling coins from the woman, he's faking it and dropping them into the bowl with his other hand which were consealing them.
Saw Penn and Teller at the Rio a few days ago. Gotta say... think it is the same woman they used used then. Anyone else seen them do this live who can comment? Still an amazing trick though, there were 3 or 4 tricks that just beggared belief.
I think he's getting some coins from behind her on the chair and some in the sectioned off half of the tank. At 1:50 he puts both hands in, one in the water filled half we see and one in the back holding some coins. You can see he occasionally reaches behind the chair. Wonderful trick.
@theaznfishy The way I see it, the aquarium is split in the middle, with only one half full of water (the half facing us audience), while the other is empty with coins and some gadget to release the goldfish. Than Teller just uses his excellent palming techniques to sell it. It's a magnificent trick.
@warrush You may be the only person in the world to grasp the idea of true misdirection. Plus, that is the most unique explanation I have ever read. It is interesting to note that the camera does not show the top edge when the fish are released.
@ssurugger You know, I saw a video of him describing how magic uses your expectations against you. In that video, he gives some of the trick away and even seeing how part of it is done, it doesn't make the trick any less beautiful. Hell, even if I knew step by step how he did it, in his hands, the trick would still be visual poetry. He could probably make flossing beautiful.
@JorgensZelda Yeah, they are amazing. I was them live in vegas and it was one of the coolest live shows I've ever seen. plus, they actually wait outside the theater and you get to meet/greet after every show. I love that they tell people it is an illusion and make it more about the talent of creating the illusion than doing the whole hocus pocus bit.
@ssurugger I saw them three times, LIVE, in New Jersey. I got to talk to them and shake their hands and get their autographs. I saw Penn at a lecture in Wayne, NJ on March 5, this year, which is his birthday. He seemed honestly pleased and surprised when I gave him a birthday card. He seemed to even remember me from when I saw him in AC the year before. Probably helps that I was one of only like 12 black people at that show..... Meh.
Actually no. But I'll tell you like Teller would say. The solutions to beautiful illusions are often dirty and not obvious. So rather than give you the dirty answer, I'll leave you with a beautiful question.
There's a trap at the top and hidden compartment at the back of the container. That's where the fish come from. You can see the squarish opening if you look carefully.
The camera angle on the shot where the goldfish appear was bad because you couldn't see the top of the glass bowl. So you didn't see that was nothing there above the glass bowl pouring the fish in the bowl.
This is one of the most beautiful illusions Teller has ever created. It is called Silverfish...for obvious reasons. The Legendary Johnny Thompson helped develop it, for you magic buffs out their. Teller was kind enough to discuss it with me after their show. Wonderful perfomer. Its funny to me how wrong most of the methods people come up with for this are. its simple people... the tank has a mirror in it. and he takes the coins from the other side of the mirror. and at the end he shovels the fish over from the other side of the mirror. the rest with the lady is very good slight of hand.

Holy mother of God. Teller is unbelievable. I need to get my arse over to the US & into Vegas before he stops doing shows, I just have to see him live!

I know. Teller is so awesome. His solo peices are just astonishing. Im not saying that penn isn't great because he is, but teller's magic is art.
