correct me if im wrong. i bought an lp. the world of david bowie. played it to death, around 1973. this has to be from that lp. from the sixties. ive still got it in the roofspace, but dont have a stylus
"She's Got Medals" is a song written by David Bowie from his 1967 UK debut album entitled simply "David Bowie". It's in the vain of the British military ideal like The Beatles "Lovely Rita", this sort of quirky reverence for women in uniform. To add confusion, Bowie's second album released in 1969 is also entitled "David Bowie" in the UK, called "Man Of Words, Man Of Music" in the States. As of 1972 all releases were re-titled as "Space Oddity", the song that made him most known in the interim.
0:53 "She went to join the army, passed the medical, don't ask me how it's done!" LOL That is TOO funny! The man is an evil genius in the music world, among other places.
I had David Bowie's first album which was released in the late 80's. Such brilliant and creative gems. This takes me back to about 1991, when I first heard this compilation.
Brain ~ The song is from DAVID BOWIE IMAGES 1966-1967 London records. You may check Ebay for current pics and information on this particular 2 record album compilation.. I had this when I was 15
These songs are fortunatelly well-known in Spain (I cannot remember the reason) but remember that other groups or singers of the time were difficult to find even after 1975. He is very appreciated by his fans ,too, though I'm not writing from mainland Sp. I think he was too advanced for his time, not rare.See you!
This is from the Images album. I had it when I was just a teen of 15, it was one of my favorite all time Bowie albums even today. Second being The man who sold the world.
dead simple and dead brilliant! I love this song and did not think I would find it here. (It really isn't all that rare, I have it on CD) Besides the china girl still the video os ok but really it's the song that counts.
--I might be brain dead, but I'm still smartrer than you.
I bought the CD at a local Cd shop too. but I never saw it anywhere again and even the case was weird with no cover. but I still got it and it's awsome.
cool. I wonder why those songs were cut out. mabe it was just re-released on many other labels under the radar since not many people knew about it that much.
No, this was released, along with some poignant ones (Buy my Toys) on a double album back in the 1970's (I own it) with some rather cool "R. Crumb" type illustrations.
yeah, this is really good! shades of his later songs. the melody reminds me of Love's arrangement of "Hey, Joe" and a few songs off of Pink Floyd's "...Piper" and "...Saucerful"
i really like how his lyrics are clear and pointed, but still a little ambiguous.
no ur right to point it out. Even in his early 60s stuff hes challenging sexual stereotypes in a very amusing way. The song does say that she got tired of picking up girls so that must make her bisexual at least then..haha I cant believe i am witing this about such an obscure Bowie song
great song, dug out my album(World of David Bowie)1970,yes i,m still playing the old vinals, forgot just what an entertainer David was,my fav., is Little bombardier, hope he keeps on making great music.

Why put RARE on the title as it isn't RARE at all. Just trying to make yourself seem special, don't work with me.

Not rare, but still brill.

Great song but it sounds like he borrowed the riff from fast version of "Hey Joe" by the Leaves/Byrds.

Supposedly this really happened in the UK during WW II. I guess they truncated the medical exam and just handed newbs a rifle. Cheers...

the first lesbian song ever I think!
leonoel42 3 years ago
Not neccesarily about a lesbian. Just about a woman who wanted to join the army, and did so by disguising herself as a guy.
