there's one thing you forgot to mention in the video. on a arcade stick plinking is much easier to do. as a fightpad user i can only do with a bumper and a button never really both.
i was never able to enjoy ssf or marvel until i got my first fightstick nothing feels better or more natural then rolling tha joystick for an ultra or hyper
one thing that Arcade sticks have a advantage over is tutorials are a lot more accessible. I use Pad, and as you would imagine it's much harder to find help on how to use a pad compared to a stick.
Which brings up another pro for stick: If you want to go to tournaments a lot, having the different styles of Pad (PS3/360) can sometimes hurt you for tourneys that are system specific if you're not used to that controller. An arcade stick can eliminate that problem.
Arcade sticks suck? Controllers suck? Maybe, but the Hitbox appears to be good.
Hitbox has to be considered an arcade stick despite the fact that there is no stick present on the device. It's the perfect hybrid between the standard controller and the arcade stick. Everything is a Sanwa button. 3 24mm movement buttons, 8 24mm attack buttons, and 1 30mm up button.
It's too bad it wasn't mentioned. Maybe you and FC Jago can do a review of it.
@theEpicDARKnessEvar They weren't banned last Evo. They most likely won't be banned next Evo. Especially since the official ones have SOCD controls [Left+Right=neutral, down+up=up].
I'm mainly a SSFIV and Marvel player, and I do awesome in Marvel, not so much in SSFIV, and I feel like a stick is more suited for SSFIV than Marvel, so that's one reason for me to want a stick.
I bought a stick because I couldn't do the right motions with the XBOX360 controllers analog stick, and neither with the bad D-pad. So I bought a cheap arcade stick and practiced with it and now I'm quite good with it and can't do anything with a pad anymore. And when this cheap stick breaks I'll invest in a better one. So I recommend that if you're struggling with a pad then try with a cheap stick to see if it's any better.
I'm a stick player and my cheap stick actually broke and I had to use a ps3 pad for a week or two. Personally, it was hell. I dropped all my combos because I have gotten so accustomed to a stick.
Video is EXTREMELY well done! I LOL'ed at the little kid's "How do I get better??" - HAHAHAHA! Keep it up, touching on some very good concepts here.
As a pad player for my entire Fighting Game tenure, I've heard it all in regards to Joysticks holding supremacy. I gave up on learning Sticks when I started pulling off "stick-specific" combos with Makoto in SF3:3S [i.e: 100% Stun/Double Abare]. It is truly a matter of preference, as effectiveness depends SOLELY on the player and practice.
Precision, which I'd say is pretty dam important in fighting games, is also a category that goes to the stick. In fact I'd say precision trumps every category pad wins except for maybe cost.
for me its an arcade stick or nothing i have alot of difficulty with the motions for special moves having to use my thumb is much harder than using my wrist and fingers on a stick shoryuken motions and ultras barely ever come out
It's not so much the stick itself as the ergonomics of using it, the human wrist is simply more precise with more points of articulation than the thumb & being able to use multiple fingers for different buttons is simply going to be superior to moving your thumb around different buttons.
The fact that all of the top Japanese players learn their craft in the arcade & that there is hardly anyone winning majors using a pad speaks for itself.
@DoubleIntruder i find this to be 100% true it can't be denied i came from pad and i could feel the limits while i was comboing especially when it came to doing fly unfly combos that require air dash.
which arcade stick would u recommend for newbys that wont require u to buy additional parts well better yet replacement parts....i dont want to buy a $150 stick and have to purchase other parts to make it feel better....help if u can thx
@flyguy305 I would recommend A madcatz TE Stick or or the Hori VX-sa/V3-SA sticks they all come with sanwa.
I would also recommend a Qanba Q4 as well since it has the amazing parts and works for both 360 and ps3 out of the box. You can get one for around 160. let me know if you need help finding them!
A point he forgot to address is say you play on a 360 Pad, and it's a PS3-only Tournament. You're Kinda SOL as using the other pad is VERY hard, while fightsticks can simply have a converter put on the end of their cable or even built-in to the hardware.
@fingercramp Im glad that youre still being positive after all these asshole comments you're getting. Don't be dicks people, they're bringing you guys great content and u bitch everytime andre isnt on camera. damn, grow up. Good shit tho fingercramp, keep it up
FC keep up the good stuff! Yeah I am a pad player that switched to stick and then back to pad so yeah the moral of the story is stick to what you know and are comfortable with. Most of these arcade people grew up with the arcade stick, I grew up playing on the super nintendo. So yeah like I said do what you are comfortable with.
I'm sure this was said before, but I'm too lazy to read all the comments. another pro not mentioned for the stick (maybe because it's irrelevant for mvc, Idk, I play SF ;D) is, there are certain techniques that are easier/only possible on a stick like pianoing, plinking, sliding and double-tapping. And the buttons being loud may be bad for you while offlineplay, but it's also a good thing for yourself having an audible feedback of what you're pressing. many players rely on sound
Great video once again. I personally do better with a sick in umvc3. I have the hori real arcade pro for the xbox. But I need the 360 controller for street fighter 4 and Tekken. I can't play Bison or Steve Fox on a arcade stick. Also the stick it's better for my hands and doesn't aggravate my carpel tunnel. No I am not an old man or out of shape, it's just genetics.
very nice pro's and con's (nice presentation Hak..and to all the haters out there : may Sopa ban you account's :D )..but one part that I think Hak missed about the arcade sticks is the ability to piano the hit buttons..on a 4 button pad that is kinda impossible..on a 6 button it might be possible if you manage to play with the pad on your knee..as he said it's all about frames and "piano-ing" saves you some and could help you drop less combos that require fast inputs.
Dude might be the owner and everything....but I think he should play his position and stay behind the camera. I think FC Jago is the reason why most people look at FC videos.
This was a solid installment. There is often much debate as to which tool is better for the job and there are arguments for each being favorable to the other. At the end of the day the deciding factors should be comfort and preference.
Here's a question that I have which is tangentially related -
In looking at the future you mentioned gamepads but that assumes that traditional button input will remain. What are your thoughts, Hak/Fingercramp, with respect to motion and touch based systems?
one more pro for the arcade stick is that it doesn't matter if you play on a 360 or a ps3, the fight stick is always the same. if you use a 360 pad and you're in a tournament that is using a ps3 then you can't use a 360 pad
@FiresDestiny well, there are converters for that, its pretty impriactical but Wolfkrone uses it for tourneys on Xbox and even EVO where dualschock 3 is banned. He plays on ps2 pad with converter.
i play my fighting games ( SSF4AE, UMVC3) on a nintendo wii classic controller with an USB adapter, the stick on the classic controller is exceptional compared to the x360 pad or the ps3 one. it has much more grip and motions like fireball or uppercut are much easier done, give it a try if you want something new and fresh. you get both for 30-35 bucks. 20 for the classic controller and 10-15 for the adapter.
I have that red arcade stick and treat it really badly and it works great, it took me a month to learn to be om with it. Now im great at using it 6. Months later much more fun. Because of it i only play marvel, and dont play cod anymore sense it is filled with whiny kids.
I started on pad and I'm really confortable on pad. I can do everything I can do on pad on stick but I STILL feel like it takes me out of my confort zone. Also I'm used to 1 button dashes with pad. On stick its two buttons so I feel like my mobility suffers. Any tips FC?
@fingercramp Well I play standard 360 pad. Mine is wireless however and almost all tournies require wired. Majors take place on PS3 which means I need a converter. Idk how good those things are in terms of button input lag and whatnot. Also...I can't find a good wired remote to buy :[
@Clouddark23 Do you know what the rationale is for holding majors on PS3 rather than on 360? It seems to be a strange decision considering that the perceived (since I don't know factually but it seems true) numbers of players in the community are greater on 360.
Let's not forget stuff like Honda. Jab to hands (especially when you don't want to get EX hands) is much easier when you can hit tons of buttons at once. Same for mashable supers in marvel. Other than that pretty good coverage.
i would have to disagree with some of the points HAK makes. plus his comment about tekken players playing controller is complete rubbish.
everyone knows all the best players (korean/japanese) use sticks all excuses aside. there are many more advantages to using a stick that HAK doesn't even begin to cover. i'm too lazy to post about it so USE STICK EVERYONE!
@kpjoebo Well, Japan has arcades. The players have to know stick to play at an arcade machine. Arcades aren't as popular in America and places like Next Level just have console set ups. Using stick in the US comes down to preference and what you're used to .
If pad will be better than why do so many people use arcade sticks. Honestly, the only pad players I could name that are actually good in tournaments are wolfkrone, fanatiq and masta cj. Meanwhile there are hundreds of killers on arcade sticks. Also, what do you use?
I started with pad, but I really liked certain aspects of playing stick, and got one of my own. It was a 4 gate when I had tried 8 gate first...so it was really unique and is still difficult for me to get down some of the stuff that was really easy on pad. Conversely I can see areas where I've improved. So I definitely think certain aspects are superior on pad but it's mostly preference and either way just keep working at it to find what you really enjoy.
I brought myself a stick 2 years ago for TvC. I had a fairly good rank when I used the controller, then it all went downhill from there despite using the arcade stick for 2 months. I went back to the virtual controller, and I was doing upper cut motions faster and more consistently. The arcade stick also tired my hand muscles out a bit more. I have more precision using my fingers than my whole hand. I'm glad this video was posted, I'm surprised that someone else thinks like me.
As someone mentioned before me would you go through button placements on a arcade stick? I can't seem to figure out how people do certain extended combos like zero for example.
I have a fightstick but i play umvc on my pad(claw style) bc i tend to spaz out on a stick. But i prefer the stick for sf (thank you shortcuts!!) in the end i gotta go with pads, im on the lookout for pads that have button placements similar to a fightstick but with an analog instead of d-pad.
Good episode!! Hope this clears things out for the masses (and please put shortcut inputs like in AE)
@quelocokid there is something close to that in the PDP pad it uses microswitches in the buttons similar to arcade buttons. You should try it out there much cheaper now.
@quelocokid is the d-pad really better in motion inputs than the analog stick? I've always preferred the analog, but yes, I too cannot wait for such a hybrid controller! (PDP Versus fightpad don't count for me bc i've heard bad reviews on it)
As someone mentioned before me would you go through button placements on a arcade stick? I can't seem to figure out how people do certain extended combos like zero for example.
while informative, the episode could/should have went into doing combos with the arcade stick and game pad maybe a good skit out of it, I'm just saying but still good information none the less.
It's true pad can do anything the stick can but I still prefer the stick because when I use D-pad it hurts my thumbs. But the one advantage you forgot to mention for arcade sticks is that it's the same on any system but the pads are different and some people just can't play on 360 pad or PS3 pad.
I use my PS3 controller. UMvC3 is the first fighting game I've ever gotten into (22 years old), and I can't really see myself ever getting so into fighting games that shelling out $150 is going to be worth it. On top of that, pad just seems so much more convenient. They're more portable, easier to pass around, most of my friends play with them (which means I don't need to worry about swapping buttons all the time).
It's all down to preference. I just happen to prefer pad.
playing on different consoles with different styles of controllers doesn't seem to matter too much as i can play solid MVC on 360 or PS3. Arcade sticks usually conform to classic streetfighter/MVC2 button layouts, and sadly MVC3 doesn't have the same kind of combat system. those old reflexes of knowing exactly where to reach don't exactly apply anymore. theres more potential to be good on the stick, but remember that it takes time. you wont instantly get good by switching
overall it's the joystick on the arcade stick that is the most beneficial factor to consider. movements are much more precise with it BUT that being said there are some drawbacks regarding the number of buttons used in fighting games. think mvc2 where there was specific punch/kick buttons perfect for arcade stick play. mvc3 uses a totally different setup that doesn't quite flow naturally for classic arcade players. Stick improves your movement TONS, but takes some relearning of buttons.
I think you forgot the most important part of why a lot of players do not go with controllers, and that is because when the current generation is over they will have to learn from scratch again on the new Xbox/Sony controller. It's like flushing 5 years worth of muscle memory down the toilet. A good stick will always be a good stick, that shit has been universal for years.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
All parts of the guide were good but this one... this one was useless and Fingercramp should get rid of this guy really, he knows nothing about fighting games he's just into FPSs and whatnot.
@HardRuisu It's funny how you should say that, you know because he is only the owner and creator of FingerCramp, but we'll discuss it over in the next meeting :)
i played nothing but gamepad my whole life. i switched to arcade stick about six months ago and i am probably twice as good. your video is obviously biased btw
Whats a good button layout for an arcade stick. I like L M H for Ultiamte MvC3 on the top but I'm personally having problems finding a good place to place the assist buttons. Any suggestions?
@MrArchibaldwitwiki In the button settings for Umvc3 the first setting is A that setting is for pad users, but setting B is for Arcade stick that's the preferred button layout. So just go to the game put the button setting to B and you're set.
i'm only 1 minute in, but i got to say arcade sticks are better in the long run because when you go to the arcade you only got the stick to play with.
there's one thing you forgot to mention in the video. on a arcade stick plinking is much easier to do. as a fightpad user i can only do with a bumper and a button never really both.

@Borisinvasion Im a stick user, I'm well know in the stick modding community. Check out the site for some customs.
I'm pretty sure you seen the red Mario themed sticks which was the first ever TE stick mod. You can find it on joystickvault.
Either way i have to be impartial.
Thanks for asking though!

MegamanEFG 1 month ago
@MegamanEFG yes, a hybrid controller will be awsome with a smooth d-pad and the face buttons like an actual arcade stick buttons
quelocokid 1 month ago
@quelocokid there is something close to that in the PDP pad it uses microswitches in the buttons similar to arcade buttons. You should try it out there much cheaper now.
fingercramp 1 month ago
@quelocokid is the d-pad really better in motion inputs than the analog stick? I've always preferred the analog, but yes, I too cannot wait for such a hybrid controller! (PDP Versus fightpad don't count for me bc i've heard bad reviews on it)

while informative, the episode could/should have went into doing combos with the arcade stick and game pad maybe a good skit out of it, I'm just saying but still good information none the less.

It's true pad can do anything the stick can but I still prefer the stick because when I use D-pad it hurts my thumbs. But the one advantage you forgot to mention for arcade sticks is that it's the same on any system but the pads are different and some people just can't play on 360 pad or PS3 pad.

I use the analog stick for gief and hakan, characters with 360 motions.

Lol too late I bought an arcade stick, but I am confirming most combos than when I had a controller.

playing on different consoles with different styles of controllers doesn't seem to matter too much as i can play solid MVC on 360 or PS3.
8bitHADOUKEN 1 month ago
overall it's the joystick on the arcade stick that is the most beneficial factor to consider. movements are much more precise with it BUT that being said there are some drawbacks regarding the number of buttons used in fighting games. think mvc2 where there was specific punch/kick buttons perfect for arcade stick play. mvc3 uses a totally different setup that doesn't quite flow naturally for classic arcade players. Stick improves your movement TONS, but takes some relearning of buttons.
8bitHADOUKEN 1 month ago
I think you forgot the most important part of why a lot of players do not go with controllers, and that is because when the current generation is over they will have to learn from scratch again on the new Xbox/Sony controller. It's like flushing 5 years worth of muscle memory down the toilet. A good stick will always be a good stick, that shit has been universal for years.

Shoutouts to the Hitbox stickless stick, the hipster faggot of the controller world.
UltraTien 1 month ago
small stuff to mention...
- most arcade sticks are universal. a ps3 pad player will have trouble on a 360 pad but most stick players can share.
-pad players may have trouble playing certain chars to their full potential, zero, taskmaster, juri

Whats a good button layout for an arcade stick. I like L M H for Ultiamte MvC3 on the top but I'm personally having problems finding a good place to place the assist buttons. Any suggestions?
MrArchibaldwitwiki 1 month ago
@MrArchibaldwitwiki In the button settings for Umvc3 the first setting is A that setting is for pad users, but setting B is for Arcade stick that's the preferred button layout. So just go to the game put the button setting to B and you're set.

i'm only 1 minute in, but i got to say arcade sticks are better in the long run because when you go to the arcade you only got the stick to play with.
