Can we just appreciate what the song is and not talking about what should be done to it? It's a great song and it wouldn't be Silversun Pickups if you changed things about it.
A few stanzas I hear differently: ... Maybe we're steeled in silence Maybe we feel the guidance Maybe our only vices ... And we sink, we sink, we'll sink and we'll fight, we fight, we fight when we crack, we crack, we cry and we slide, we slide, we'll slide into delight ...last stanza Pull out the fear in silence Pull out your need for guidance and pull out your only vices ...
The bassist could have done much more for this song, especially when the mood of the song changes between 3:12-3:13; at least a proper introduction of the drum set would've been nice. Her sloppy triplets in the beginning annoy me, too :( overall, though I have to say, my love for this song cannot be faltered by a lazy bassist.
I agree re: the bassist, but i think the monotony of the bass melody serves to highlight the bass shift during the chorus, which you definitely feel (especially since you gotta wait 2 minutes for it to come back, and its a great climax)
@pkConda I'm sorry but the foundation of the chord progression [bass line] is the last thing I notice when it comes time to reaching the chorus; sure it's nice to hear a balanced sound, but you remiss the other elements that truly have a bigger hand in separating the chorus from the verses. I also must disagree about the 'big mood shift', because the syncopated rhythm guitar coming front stage of the wall of sound completely changes the color of the song from a wistful blue to an ominous pink.
@arthursnotking Furthermore, what you describe on 4:15 is the ominous pink slipping downward into the imminent violent red accented by the dirty, echoing distortion on the guitar to which we all jam; which is why I feel there is only one true mood change, if you understand the mechanics to the song. What would have fixed 3:12-3:29 bass-wise would be to abandon the legato restricted choice of equalization and opt for more staccato/staccatissimo/marcato sound by raising the mid/high, while slowly
@arthursnotking retreating back to the previous EQ, after the drums enter. The reason I feel her choice of legato is distasteful, even insulting, is because she fills 3:12-3:29 with such a bland sound, which ought to have been an artful movement of selective, rhythmic silence. The only improvement needed bass-wise for 0:00-3:12, in my opinion, is that she simply needs to play more rhythmically defined triplets (yes, triplets are hard to play, but that's no excuse for sloppy playing); fixing this
@arthursnotking would allow the color of the song to achieve the paramount deep, opaque Spanish-esque indigo, for which I feel they were attempting. In my mind, 3:12-4:15 was supposed to be the suture of two genres; instead, she fills it with crap and infects the entire tapestry :( Lastly, I have no qualms with her 'monotony', as you described it, only her musicality; monotony is the staple for most simple, yet profound bass lines.
i went to go and watch Placebo, i think it was in the year 2009, and oh my damn this band came on before placebo i fell in love straight away with this song!
there seriously isn't a single song i don't try to sing along to, be it i know the words or not...but when i first listened to this on my ipod i just shutup and took in every noise that came in. No song has ever done that before
I have a question, is this a progressive song? I just want peoples input because this type of beautiful music is so rare and I love how it grows by the second while you"re listening to the song.
@whitesoxnation312 i cant really answer if it is progressive , but its pretty solid that you say that this song grows by the second while listening to it since that is almost the message of the song as a whole in my opinion. "while growing old to the world is a losing battle , we fight to remain young on the inside."
WoW! Hell yeah! Love Silversun Pickups! Listening to a lot of Silversun, Hey You!, The Offspring, My Chemical Romance, No Doubt, and Weezer...
Hey You! is still pretty new, but they're waaaaaaay dope. Pop/Rock/Punk with a real cool edge. Plus they've got a cute chick singer :-) ...check em out....
@lingsbord Well, my grandad was in his late 60s when I was born. Some of the kids at the school around the corner, their grandparents are probably 30. ;p
Everything's perfect in this song! The thing i love about sspu's the most is... no matter what song it is when i listen to it , i drift away to a better place =)
i love how a bunch of people write about a "secret message" in the song and they cant just enjoy the song itself they have to explain the "secret message as if anyone cares.
lol yes and yes. I agree, but it would probably be harder if the show kept having the mediocre episodes like its had most of this season. Either way, like this it actually is sad, especially for south park.
@jpmcruiser95 Yeah you're right, I want to see the series end on a high note. and the Stevie Nick's song was such a perfect fit for the somber tone of that episode's latter half -- Randy and Sharon got divorced, Kyle and Cartman are best friends, Stan has become a cynical asshole. The overlay of "Landslide" was Matt & Trey's way of saying to us fans, "Hey we love you guys, we've had an amazing run, we know you've built your lives around us, but we've grown up and it's time to let us go." :(
After hearing this .... there's no doubt in my mind that the Silversun Pickups are RUSH fans :-) I'm a Rush fan and this reminds me sooo much of Hold Your Fire and I DIG IT! :-) Way to go SP! Those who ( like my brother the other day lol ) say that the Pickups are just a Pumpkins rip off need to listen to the album cuts. YES i won't deny that they are heavily INFLUENCED by Pumpkins but not ripping them off. This tune is proof they have other sides as well! Great band. Can't wait for next album!
@vinnykster There's a video somewhere on YouTube where an interviewer asks Brian about influences and who they're compared to. Brian said one fan compared them to Rush, and he was really surprised that someone would make that comparison. He said (paraphrased): "It's probably because Geddy and I have unusual voices."
I can literally listen to either one of their CDs on a constant basis. I mean the lyrics and music both blend so beautifully together it gives me chills. Brian Aubert is a genius! And I can't wait for the next album to come out....
i think its about the spirit thats released from the body at death... i feel like the song is in the point of view of floating spirits and a description of the few moments between slipping from life to death... ?????????? and trying to answer the question of what happens to us when we die... but who knows???..
@Me6adeth01 Brian's singing lead, with Nikki backing up at 1:36, 2:56, and 5:03. The parts "Then we sing/fly/cry/slide" sounds like her singing backup, but when I've seen them perform those parts live, it's just Brian singing.
For the record, their next album really should have a song or two with Nikki singing lead.
This song has everything I could ever ask for in a song: awesome bass line, awesome drums, crazy good guitar, especially in the transition from slow to fast, and the fact that it transitions from slow to fast. For some reason, transitions like that make me feel all happy inside. Oh, and I love constant bass pedals, too. ^.^

There's a deeper, motivational meaning to this song. He's singing about age and how it sucks (I mean, he's 35. Hardly a freshman). Then the mood changes, and he basically tells you to live like you're young and never be afraid of dying. "You've got nowhere to go but here".
at first i thought it was a bit plain but that's then i realized the beauty of his voice and the low mellow tone that lullaby's me to sleep. it puts all my anger and exhaustion away. this is some good ass shit! XD
@scmin2000 You will probably never get the true meaning of this song. Brian's lyrics are very subtle, and about things that you either have to be him or have witnessed what caused him to write what he is writing about. He's pretty much avoided and questions about what a songs true meaning is in interviews and has said he just wants listeners to feel the song.

What a great contemplative driving song! Love it when the extra guitar and drums kick in at ~3:20!

This song makes me think of nostalgic times. It makes me happy, sad, and mad at the same time.

This song should be the closing credits to a great movie.

@esalz83 If the movie had an ending where EVERYONE was happy, then yeah. If not, then I still see what you mean.

@esalz83 You know, as a filmmaker, I've thought of that same thing myself. :)
