Fort Irwin (I was there for 2 years) was still crap when I escaped last year. No game room, mud room, none of that. The geo bachelor barracks had a game room. Sad, I wasn't one.. Two of us shared a room, and we shared a bathroom with the two soldiers next door.We didn't have a kitchen and we weren't allowed to have hot-plates..that's the real army..

I went and stayed at Fort. Leavenworth with a friend and his barracks was a little similar to this...but no stove. and only two bedrooms, and they share a bath and the fridge. Really nice.

Or you could be put in "historical barracks". No upgrades or renovations whatsoever. 3 people to a room, no stove or kitchen and public showers and toilets. All you get is a wall locker and a fridge and microwave to share.

I've seen a lot of barracks, dont expect yours to be anything like this. I would venture a guess that most single soldiers live in a small room with a bed and a computer desk that they share with another soldier. Common bathrooms in the hallway shared with the 20 or so soldiers living on their floor, common laundry rooms. No kitchen in the barracks at all, but probably a microwave in your room.

Having said that, a lot of the new barracks being build are closer to this one than what I described.

Wow, we had 3-man rooms with about 15 sq ft per person. The bathroom had a stand-up shower and everything was painted cement block. Mail wasn't done at the barracks, either. And for the whole building there was 4 washers and 4 dryers.

Lucky bastards nowadays, lol. I was only in 20 years ago. Seems like a big change in that short of time.

It's good single soldiers barracks are improving. During my time at Fort Hood in the Gulf War era, the barracks were poor with AC that didn't work - in a Texas summer!

That said, the career single enlisted soldier is MUCH worse off than their married counterparts. Married soldiers can build equity in a house with tax free BAQ/VHA allowances. This pay is denied singles below E6.

Worse, these pay discrepancies often lead single soldiers into marriages that fall apart. Policies should change.

As a (current) taxpayer and ex Gulf War Infantryman, I still find it amazing that single soldiers can almost never get BAQ/VHA allowances to build housing equity (like their married counterparts do). The Army should at least allow anyone who re-enlists the option of BAQ/VHA. Current policy is stupid. Quality singles leave the service.

I wish I had something even CLOSE to that when I was in the Army!! I wanna know how this soldier survives inspection--we couldn't have stuff on the wall, we didn't have a fridge or a stove, there was a COMMUNITY restroom.. no "mud room" . I had a bunk, 1 (ONE) wall locker, a desk, 2 drawers below my bed for clothing, and there was no way in hell that we could put anything on the walls..

Same size for two soldiers with NO walking closet my friends, my gear is helplessly all over the place. If you want to live in a top notch home then don't live on base get your own place, YOU pay the rent utilities & everything else. The military is paying for soldiers to live on base, why would someone join the army expecting five star hotel type barracks? Get your own fancy place pay your own bills.

I have seen many barracks at different installations that are very similar to this. Private bedroom with shared bath and kitchenette. Get a high rank and important mos, then the perks come with it.

@loveary this is actually the infantry barracks at knox, the engineer barracks are two man rooms with a shared shower and no kitchenette. you dont need to have a important job or be high ranking because spc and below are they only ones that have to stay in the barracks if they are not married, it just depends on the base and if the army started to update the barracks on that installation. fort drum is in the process of putting soldiers in the new barracks.
