Extending & expanding Toronto's subway system should have been ongoing, throughout the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s. Unfortunately, financial support was cut to nearly nothing by successive governments (and to nothing at all, by Mike Harris' government).
The result is the crumbling, filthy, overburdened, inefficient, unreliable, and overpriced mess that we have today. Ford's grandiose schemes completely fail to take into account how to pay for this long-overdue expansion, so don't hold your breath.
The subway has proven extremely popular and is at many time very crowded, so it looks like expansion will be necessary for quick, high capacity transit in Toronto into the future. Streetcars and LRT are also relevant, so I don't support the new mayor's views, either. I just can't write off the most important component of our transit system as completed and adequate for the needs of this growing metropolis.
