  • even though they are old the california fan palm grows fruits with one seed in each

so they can just re plant them

  • This made me miss Los Angeles. The palm trees were one of my favorite aspects of the city. They always brightened my mood with their dramatic presence. Whether they stood up above the streets like the tails of Dr. Seuss characters or sat on the lawns like huge pineapples, they made the city much more colorful and fun. I like silent movies and in the street scenes the palm trees are new and only about 8 or 10 feet tall. Time to plant some more before all these die. Thanks for a nostalgic LA trip.

  • You are quite welcome. This is the LA I grew up in. Actually they are NOT planning on replacing them, and yes some of the oldest ones are dying. They are so popular it is too expensive to replace them.

  • What is the music in this?

  • It is great, isn't it? It is "Swaying" (palm trees, swaying, get it?) by the Vitamin String Quartet (I don't know what that means). You can get it on iTunes.

  • Thanks

  • socal is tropical wannabe, they plant tons of palms but they will always be 10 degrees north of the tropic of cancer.

  • This is certainly true. The palms were planted to give So Cal a "tropical" feel although cisalpine So Cal is a dry Mediterranean. Ironically, the two most popular palms historically, although not currently, are dessert palms. The California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) and even more so the Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta)are staples of the older stock of LA palms.

The real question is, do they work?
