f1 is pathetic. with the aerodynamics they have now, there is nobody overtaking. there are no turbocharged monsters like the mp4/4 that senna drove. the paddle shifters are a crutch, f1 isn't supposed to be about efficiency, that's what endurance racing is for. f1 is supposed to be the most skilled drivers going flat out in the best cars. I can understand audi's dct in the r15/r18, it's cause they want max efficiency.
Did you see the Montreal GP 2011? No overtaking, sure. Jenson Button overtook the whole field from 21'st to winning the race in the last lap. There's still racing and overtaking there.
before that they where running to the cars from the other side of race track.
Anyway, that narrow starting start/finish .......... with all that crowd ... epic.
Its like the whole world is watching.
And the moment of start without any sound ... i think that today for example in F1 they feel the same at the start ... the moment on the grid before the lights go on and then off ... its like forever
@gorrilla1234 GT40 was runaway spending at Ford, and it created a good car. Ford was pissed that it couldn't buy Ferrari for 15 million, so it spent 100 million to beat them. When Ferrari and Porsche countered with runaway spending they massacred the GT40. Ford opened up the Pandora's Box of money in the auto racing world.
@gakkerout Henry Ford the II was pissed because Ferrari changed his mind at the last second, so out of spite, Henry Ford II was rumored to have said to Carrol Chelby: "I don't care what it takes, I don't care how much it costs, beat that wop Ferrari at LeMans."
And they did just that, four years straight, making their point.
Also, how did Ferrari "masacre" the GT40? The Mk I was a failure, yes, but after they put the 427 in it, it was all over for Ferrari. Ford burried them.
@gakkerout Porsche's 917 started winning outright at LeMans AFTER the MK 4 GT40 won in '69. Porsche didn't win outright until '70, at which point Ford retired the project and only privateers campaigned the cars, which were at that point long obsolete.
Ferrari hasn't won LeMans since 1965, when they crushed the Mk I GT40s which had aerodynamic stability problems, amoung other issues. Ferrari hasn't won since Ford spanked their asses way back then. lol
@SpeedingStudent Holy shit, you really stuck a nerve with Pinin500. Anyways. Yes, Ferrari didn't fair as well as Porsche's 917 did. Heck, the 917 still proved competitive in the hands of privateers in the 80's. Ford couldn't keep up with the stricter engine rules like Porsche did. Turbos were things of fairy tales to Ford at the time. I like Ford, look at my Eleanor on my profile, but they can't match Porsche. Also, Ferrari focusing on F1 isn't quite as boring as Ford focusing on NASCAR.
@gakkerout Yeah, he's angry Muslims are taking over Europe. lol
NASCAR is a joke, and is not real automotive racing. Now LeMans, that is real racing.
F1 has, in my opinion, always been boring...well, at least since the 70s, now there is no more innovation (fan cars for downforce, turbines, etc.). Now the cars are all homogenized, and the FIA bends the rulebooks to Ferrari's will...so the deck is stacked against even McLaren-Mercedes.
But yes, Porsche is the stuff of legends, 917 esp.
I always thought, the start of the 24 hours of Lemans was with the drivers sprinting across the track to get in their cars and going. Am I confusing races?
Funny how this movie is advertised in Porsche enthusiast stores like Performance/Automotion. There'll never be another movie as simple and classic as this one, and there will never be another movie that will be filmed in the actual Le Sarthe racetrack.
When you read who he had doing the driving sequences it was the who is who of Enduro racing, the greats, ahead of its tiem, lke GrandPrix {Garner could drive too!} Brabham {jack{ drove the camera car, all the great F-1 drivers were involved. This is a classic
Gulf Porsche never won the LeMans24 but its one of the greatest race-movies ever..... love it. Despite the fact that an american beats a german. (What haves an Ami to do in an european race ?";)
this movie is soooo underrated!!! i watch it every year. the filmmaking is beautiful. I think it got trashed and was a failure during it's release because people didn't realize that it's actually an art film. the movie destroyed mcqueen financially as well as his marriage. this movie star literally suffered for his art!!! LOL
There are other racing movies Grand Prix with james garner winning with paul newman However, this movie has the greatest scenes in racing history. The last 10 minutes still keep me on the edge of my seat. The cameras mounted on the lower fender and rear of the cars was quite brilliant indeed.
I have This movie on tape and have watched it over and over again and I'm still amazed at the astute detail. Beside the atunning visual Effects....the sound track is a pure delight. If you have never heard a normally aspirated Ferrari or a turbo Porshe....in race trim....then you are in for a Real Treat!
Best race sceen ever - there is no need für technical tricks. Just enjoy the silence which seems to last forever, look in the drivers eyes and you can feel they can't expect to go out on the track. No movie ever captured this emotions so brilliantly on film.
This is the only movie I know of in which one, who is not a race fan, has to redefine what a movie is supposed to be, in order to truly appreciate it. Sadly most folks are too ridged in their thinking to do this. If you are a race fan then this is not necessary. You just accept it and LOVE it! McQueen did something very special here that I seriously doubt we'll ever see the likes of again.
The correct quote is: "Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting. "

No real story line apart from the death of a competitor the previous year - pure McQueen!
