  • Since when did Seinfeld know to drum?

  • @TheFatty2497

I agree, but I think to the "none musicians" he's not that well known. Compare to Lars Ulrich for example, he's known to alot of people. Is he good? hell no...

  • Hating Dave Weckl is like hating drumming ...

  • Man I can't understand why some of these folks are hatin on Dave, I enjoyed this video, and besides that I'd like to see any of these shit talkers try to pull this off.

  • Dave Wekl is welcome to jam with me ANYTIME !!....BRILLIAND SKINSMAN

  • Anyone who disliked this video... I feel very sorry 4 u

  • What snare did he use? I want to buy that one><

  • @nomelnomel1 14x4 brass

  • @nomelnomel1 It is a Yamaha Brass piccolo snare drum. Discontinued and very rare.

  • No acronyms here. OH MY G-D at 4:20

  • it's the 6th day, I'm running low on water and i still can't find chrismitchell45's comment...

  • I'm 15 and I realized.....BULLSHIT enough "age" things on YouTube please..

  • @gkc25

Most 15 year kids don't realize something like that. I think its awesome that there are kids like him.

  • dave believe it or not has improved his playing to an unfathomable degree, back here in the 80's his playing was very technical and impressive but now its musical and perfect beyond human capability

  • HOLY SHIT DAVE WECKL USED TO BE ANDY SAMBERG

  • nice dave

  • see great groove: /watch?v=sTMjT6YsyXk

  • He looks like a android from blade runner

  • Wow, I didn't know Jerry Seinfeld was such a good drummer!

  • 243 people are hair stylists.

  • Weckl picked up a pair of sticks and was amazing. But.... He plays the drums with SOOOOOOOOOO much more feel nowadays.

  • the way he rolls on the cymbals is just beautiful at 4:18

  • "We'll start with a straight ahead type thing..." blat da dat boom blat doom da dat .... holy cow.

  • Ahahaha!!! No Syncro? This is a shit video on YT.

Weckl is shit too but this is another history.

  • The resolution of this video can't keep up with this dude.

  • What makes Dave Weckl a fantastic drummer (compared to Mike Portnoy for example) is that he manages to do a brilliant drum solo without 50 toms and 3 bass drums :-) Like Mike does. He sucks compared to Dave..

  • Fml

  • As great as Dave was then, he's even better now!

  • Weckl's hair....feathered AND lethal.....

  • What drumheads is he using?

  • @Dartman85 .. REMOS.. Toms, Clear Ambassadors (toms), Coated Amb (sn), Black Amb (bs)

  • @roligarciajr Are really Ambassadors the batter heads on toms? I thought they were Emperors...

  • Comment removed

  • @roligarciajr Get it. Thank you very much for the clarification!!

  • 242 people play Trumpet...

  • IF anyone knows the name of the black metronome/sequencer machine he's got to his right, please reply here to this comment, cause i really want to know! thank you

  • @Storviksbo

It's a Yamaha RX5 drum machine. Has bass sounds in it, etc.Pretty dated by today's standards but an awesome tool back in the day.

  • Comment removed

  • fuck this

  • "Let's start with a straight ahead type of thing." Yeah. That was pretty straight forward, Dave.

  • I remember the first time I watched this I was like "zomg this guy is the best drummer ever." He really did a lot for drumming. Gave it more finesse.

  • If anyone dislikes this it's cause they don't know what good drumming is. That solo is completely smooth

  • Weckl has so much talent and class. He's so far ahead of the so-called 'list of best drummers' it's not even funny. The proof is that none of the current 'stars' in rock/thrash/whatever could get anywhere near repeating the natural beauty of Weckl's effortless, unforced, intuitive style. Best drummer in the world, no question.

  • thanks weckl, you give a lot of rythm for next generation

  • Im curious as to which drum kit Dave is playing on in this video? It reminds me of the Yamaha Birch Recording Custom in Cherry Red but then I could be wrong.

  • Anyone know what drum kit Dave is playing on in this video?

  • @kc5tng

    Yamaha Recording Custom

  • how can you say "lets start with a straight ahead type thing "and then do that !!!????

  • Franco, domani passo a prenderti alle 20:00. Non dimenticare nè la maionese nè il pane, sennò il pic-nic va a puttane.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=qdCDuTqwNuQ

  • What I like so much about this guy, is when he says that he is going to play a solo, he isn't playing a solo.

    He's playing a bloody masterpiece!

  • win

  • I am sick of all these thrash drummers out there getting all of the attention when there are guys like this who are ten times as good with next to none reccognition, I am 15 and I am realizing this.

  • @jammastertyty They're better in technical terms, but sometimes it sounds better to be less technical, and plus, people like thrash more ;p

  • @jammastertyty Every drummer knows who Weckl is and no one can deny his talent but it comes down to what people like and more people especially the youth are more interested in metal.

  • @jammastertyty Dave Weckl has tonnes of recognition. Also there are some pretty damn talented metal drummers out there. Talent knows no stylistic ideology.

  • @jammastertyty I agree! No one cares about the GOOD drummers. I bet no Travis Barker fans even know who Buddy Rich or Neil Peart are.

  • @jammastertyty Since when are thrash drummers famous? Thrash Metal is practically non-existent to the majority of the world besides the Big Four. Of course drummers like this guy blow them out of the water, but Thrash Metal drummers get very little attention paid to them, if any at all.

  • @jammastertyty You know the best drummer is the least known drummer right? Half of the making of a live as a musician is publicity, and playing with a band, not practicing all kinds of paradiddles.

  • @jammastertyty

Being a thrash drummer is demanding, there is no such thing as one better drummer than another (with the exception being people who are starting). I've seen Weckl live, I'm 15 this month. Being a great musician has nothing to do with fame. Dave Weckl performed on Buddy Rich's memorial concert. That's an honor in itself. I mean, sure, there are people who are famous for being talented, when they really suck (Lars, I'm looking at you), but playing jazz and thrash is just as hard.

  • @jammastertyty next to none reccognition? 2,038,502 views mate!!

  • @jammastertyty Agreed. I'm a (mainly) Thrash and Death metal drummer, and this guy beats the shit out of most drummers. I am also 15, realized it a long time ago. But my main point is that (depending on genre) he is one of the best drummers alive. But see it from an other point of view, he ain't the best double bass drummer in the world. (Obviously because he doesn't use them as much as George Kollias or Chris Adler. Technically, he is the best drummer in my opinion.

  • @me8t4ec technique wise i'd say jojo mayer is the strongest. i listen to my my fair share of enslaved, protest the hero, fall of troy, etc. but none of those guys can hold a stick to weckl, or vinnie colaiuta, jojo, chambers, harland, etc.

  • @jammastertyty No recognition? This is one of the most famous drummers in the world.

  • 240 baldheads being jealous ^.-

  • I was in Drum Fest. Dave is really awesome!

  • <3

  • 0:45 to 1:34 is so funktastic!

  • wait ok so jesus was apparently the son of god... i swear weckl doesnt have a son called jesus?

  • Reeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaly coooooooooooooooooooooool! ;)

  • lol "straightforward"

    yeah right dave

  • i can do that

  • @ostric145

is this some real question ?.....im pretty sure all of this was impro.....a mix of different rudiments and techniques..

  • There are flashier drummers, and a few with better groove. But I know of no other drummer with Weckl's fluidity, combinative prowess, and degree of "coordinated independence". Just amazing to watch! I feel lucky to have seen him perform live 7 times.

  • Heh... He starts off every segment with, "Okay, so..."

    I love you, Dave.

  • OH YEAH BABY, HEA'S NEW TO ME AS A FAV, I'M JUST INSANELY IN LOVE WITH THE FEEL, HE'S ONE OF ONLY A FEW I BELIEVE YOU HAS THAT bruford tight thing bUT ALSO HAS THE CLASSIC caleuita THING AS WELL.

WOA WOA WOA :).I soo wish my one was played without the two year break, I tend to have a similar sound. GLENN FLETCHER PN-NEW ZEALAND.

  • HIs tone is never annoying.. never hitting it too hard...with just the right touch....always listenable.

  • @BJrok he is not always listenable, he is always GREAT!

  • I love Weckl's use of cymbals. I love a solo with plenty of cymbal accentuation. :D.

  • what ride is he playing?

  • I was lucky enough to go to the same high school as Dave and see him play in our gymnasium Even then he was outrageous !

    What a talent

  • Mullet is the most mis-indentified hairstyle in history.

  • YouTube can be both a blessing and a curse because it lets us watch drummers who were 10 times better 20 years ago than we'll ever be in our whole life, no matter how much we practice. I mean, the Weckl of today would absolutely school this guy, make him look silly. He's that good. In fact I saw him 22 years ago with Corea and he wasn't great, he was MIND-BLOWINGLY great, simply astonishing, and it made my dick disappear like a frightened turtle. But guess who's Vinnie's favorite drummer? Ringo.

  • @owlcu Yep...you got it! Love your comment, and about ringo...many many modern drummers use to say that they'r kind of ispired by him...well i think is not pointless, ringo kind invented something new,,,i guess,,,think...hope! Just kidding, ringo is the man, if you listen to his drumming carefully, and compair him to the older drummers you can understand why He is so loved by our heros,,,couse he was our heros's hero!

  • OMG!!

  • what heads is he using on his toms? they sound awsome

  • I THINK HIS HAIRDO IS ON COKE!

  • @TouchingYou ka-ka-ka-ka YEYUH!!!!

  • @TouchingYou Hey...it was the '80's!

  • Not gonna lie... I hate your ride cymbal....

  • this era (80s 90s) was the worst for drums

  • @zzzzzzzzzz202 yeah, let´s see: Gadd, Weckl, Colaiuta, Chambers. Novak...

  • @zzzzzzzzzz202 the 80's had jeff porcaro, chambers with mclaughlin, and vinnie's playing on 'secrets.' The 90's had vinnie with Sting, and Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band. Maybe you just need to look harder for good drumming of those eras.

  • someone tell me now, is that the pearl czx? If so, thats the drumkit i just got for christmas...

  • @happyheadpopper Nop, it is a Yamaha Recording Custom, and its a great one for christmas too..

  • when does he do the "straightforward" thing??

  • @27dedrummer straigh ahead, as in straight ahead jazz, meaning the basis is the swing ride pattern used in jazz standards, as opposed to a fusion or latin jazz style.

  • @BrokenPerception just foolin mate :)

  • Sounds just fine to me, and he has a nice drum sound!

  • A jew in Z cavericcis! Dude is yoda in a mullet!

  • good ol' lethal weapon dave :P

  • i swear this looks like carter beaford copied dave weckl and added a few things to the set ahaha

  • mel gibson

  • Damn he was so much better back then before Freddy Gruber got ahold of him. Peart too!

  • i personally dont care for his style, hes a great drummer, buti just prefer a different drumming style im not hating on him, hes amazing way better then me

  • @drummer6243 we all have different styles... :D

  • sound's off

  • IN MY OPPINOIN he is to plain doesnt change the fact that hes good i jst like more up beat stuf like neil pert joey jordison bud gauh

  • oWDeTwrJwYo

  • A good drummer is about speed, independence, rhythm, power, clarity and HAIRDO.....

    The mullet kills it... :P

Talk about independence... TYPE "AKIRA JIMBO"

  • Amazing.....I like tune of his drums!

  • travis barker's as good as this guy but in different styles. just my opinion

  • @Docas633 Barker lacks the experience, one day maybe..

  • @DrumThat1 maybe he's not as experienced as this guy is but still he has a lot of experience. i mean he managed to play perfectly well with only one arm

  • @Docas633 I wouldn't say that's a tremendously hard skill, although I give him kudos for that.

  • @DrumThat1 i'm glad at least you recognize some of his talent and imagination

  • @Docas633 Travis is way overrated. He is a good drummer but you cant compare him hes just good at punk and punk isnt that hard.

  • @DrumEmaHer0 yeah ok. but i think his imagination while composing is awesome. and besides what makes a good musician is to play their music well while having fun and to be good at what you do. and travis's exactly like that

  • @Docas633 Yea he is talented and a great musician but people like to compare him with the big guys and he is good but he isnt the best or the best at what he does. But will give him some props the dude can kick my ass in drums any day so im not saying he sucks at drums either

  • @Docas633 i get your point. still i think he is one of the best punk rock drummers. different opinions

  • @Docas633 True he has good imagination and does interesting notes, but he can't compete with bobby jarzombek or bozzio

  • @sebaswildboy well i don't know those drummers so i can't give my opinion. but i get your point

  • My favorite drummer ever !!

  • which video lesson is this from?

  • @JuJuHouse24 Its from an old vhs he put out in 80s or 90s. Personally I didnt benefit that much from it. Tommy Igoe is much better at teching.

  • i love how the ride is right in his face. you dont really see that too often

  • Daves very smooth, calm..very good player.. Im sure he would appreciate drummings next big thing, MMAs ( ray3handssnow..).

Hes a freak, and changing the instrument..

  • stumbled @ 114.

  • so much flow

  • AMAZING solo

  • MULLET!

  • @Gbreinin THE KING of ALL mullets!!!....... and among the best that will ever play the instrument.

  • If you`re going to throw comments about who`s the best drummer/guitarist etc, you need to be able to recognize the genius in front of you despite the fact that he might not represent your genre.

  • "ill just start by crushing all your hopes and dreams in playing drums like me"

  • Dave is The Best.

  • "I'll start with a straight ahead type of thing that obliterates anything else ever played before. Then I'll get exponentially more advanced from there."

Was this guy born with a miniature drumset?

  • @Spectre426

Some people are born with silver spoons in their mouths, others with nothing...Dave was born with drumsticks in hand.

  • dave weckl and neil peart are my favorite drummers

  • 3.26 - 3.40...Lovely groove!!

  • ...oohh those Yamahas - the perfect media for his perfect ghost strokes

  • Every drummer should watch this.

  • @MrTeslasRevenge Lars probably is.

  • in the beginning with the supposedly "straight ahead type of thing"...its almost like he's saying "I am drum god Dave weckl. I am beyond all time signatures."

  • beginning with the "straight ahead type of thing"....time signatures are for LOSERS!!

  • curious how far from sweet spot hes holding the stick with left hand :O

  • I have that CD!!! Back to basics its awesome!

  • Lars is much better. Weckls pretty good though

  • @dwilmer7 Lars is better? What the fuck are you talking about? Are you smokin' dope?????

  • @MrTeslasRevenge Lars? Lars is just a douche bag that cant play drums for shit that just somehow happened to be a drummer for "Metallica" because his daddy knows people in the music industry. Anyone says Lars is a good drummer obviously has no background in music. They only say that because he is the drummer for their favorite band Metallica.

Dave Weckly has skill that is unmatched. I still don't know how he can get so many sounds out of one symbol or one drum at a time. Talent is Talent. : )

  • @DJSexLeopard I couldn't agree with you more Lars is a no talent hack thats what i was saying to dwilmer7 .

  • @dwilmer7 Lars is an untalented, half-ass crybaby who sucks at drums. Dave is a million time more complex than him. I guess if you were a DRUMMER, not a metallica fanboy, you would realize that. I'm not saying metallica sucks, I say Lars sucks and he's just famous for being in a famous band

  • @0intelligence0 Dude, Saying that Lars sucks is just stupid cause he's not a bad drummer. There's different levels of skill in everything in life, but you don't have to be god-like to be good. Lars is not as good as Dave, but he doesn't suck.

  • @MrMcskurk he's still the worst when you compare to any other professional drummer... can you tell me one famous drummer that's worse than him?

  • @0intelligence0 Travis barker? There you go.

  • @MrMcskurk Okay, since Lars is considered metal drummer, can you name one metal drummer that's worse than Lars?

  • @0intelligence0 If Lars is a metal drummer, then why did you compare him to Weckl in the first place? :P

  • @MrMcskurk Well, true. And since you mentioned Barker, yeah he sucks. It's not me who started the Dave-Lars comparison anyways :S But Dave is better at EVERYTHING than Lars (Even speed and double bass, which Lars sucks at)... except making money...

  • @0intelligence0

    Peter Criss?

  • Dave

  • Listening to this.. WHERE IS TIME? I know he has it.. I just hate that I can't hear it!

  • @chrismitchell45 he plays in a syncopated cut time

  • @chrismitchell45 It's only a practice mate, we all do it. Dave Weckl is allowed an off day!

  • @chrismitchell45 That's normal because someone with ultra advance skills will do things you can't understand.

Maybe some people doesn't even know the date release of that video.

    1989 VHS Tape cassette

So yeah, he was doing impressive stuff, amazing chops and nobody at this time was close to that level. Maybe Steve Smith and Peter Esrkine, but Weckl bring something totally new, not only jazz or fusion, I would say futurist sound with Chick Corea Electric Band and of course, off beat ideas.

  • @DruMmMeuR "nobody at this time was close to that level."

Check out Vinnie Colaiuta's drumming on Allan Holdsworth's album, 'Secrets'. Same year. Vinnie can hang with anybody, from any time period.

  • @chrismitchell45 That would because it's unsynchopated rhythms and off beats.

  • @chrismitchell45

at 2:54 begins a 4/4 measure and it goes on until the end.

Try to count along. It works!

  • @chrismitchell45 he's going through the barlines, if you get the videos back to basics and the next step...he explains it in further detail there :)

  • @chrismitchell45 Listen to the PULSE, not TIME. There, now you're a better musician.

  • @chrismitchell45 HE JUST PLAY IT WITH HIS OWN TIME AND SOME COMBINATIONS TOO

  • i also wanted to be the best drummer in the world too, i remember that being a goal. I hope that i actually get as ridiculous as dave, but its gonna take a lot of practise (and still i consider myself quite a demon on the drums, just nuthin compared to him).
