You know, back in the late 1960s, critics would complain about avant-garde musicians who were phonies, couldn't really play, didn't know the standard tunes. With few exceptions, they didn't name names, but anybody with a lick of sense knew that Archie Shepp was one of those people they had in mind. Well, listen to these perfomances from 30 years ago; Shepp could play Charlie Parker tunes and timeless standards. Could we perhaps get some apologies, after all these years?
Personally, I never quite understood what is the use of the so called critics in arts.
Music is art, and art can only be experienced. Any type of analysis and reasoning is secondary. The critics only express their own subjective analysis, so really...it already gets close enough to useless at this point.
But for a 'professional critic' to have believed that Archie couldn't really play...wow! that takes tons of ignorance. It made me laugh in disbelief.
