I love this movie. I know it could have been longer and better because Stalin ruled the worlds largest nation for over a quarter of a century. He had millions and millions of people killed. I just wanted to see more of Stalin!!!

The fact that its also one of the very few films about Stalin out there is also really overlooked. IMDB.com reviewers also shower the film with praise.
Ok I saw the movie. It was surprisingly very good, for what it was. It had definite historical inaccuracies, and dealt with WW2 very lightly, but otherwise, I found it pretty good.
Also I think this movie sucks! The acting is God awful and some of the events that happened aren't being portrayed right!
Robert Devual cannot portray the kind of energy that Stalin can. I'm sorry he's a good actor, but I think the role should have gone to someone more ethinic looking and rough around the edges.

Saw that Movie, it was sad. Man, anyone that could possibly have chance of taking him out was "disappeared" and anyone that could group together to fight him was destroyed in the name of the People. Just imagine, USSR had 100 million inhabitants, minus 20-25 million dead in the war that is 80 million inhabitants. For 60 million to kill 20 million people they must had to concentrate all their efforts in killing those 20 million.
Look at hitler, he built giantic concentration camps made ex-professo to kill people, he had railways and trains specially built to transport jews. He had a man killing industry, with scientist working specifically to find most efficient ways to kill people. And he was able to kill 6 million people.
Stalin didn't want to anihilate an entire culture or religion, he just wanted to remain in power as long as he could, so it wasn't really necessary to "kill people randomly" or to do all that non-confirmed (yet, not denied) things many people claim he did. Of course Stalin had prisioner camps with thousands of people there but the camps were not made to kill people, just to have them working, of which many of them died due to the inhuman conditions.
There was a famine in Ukraine where 2 million people died, is said that Stalin did it to punish the ukranians, but this is, again is not confirmed, is more plausible that the Kulaks made them to themselves, because, when stalin ordered the collectivization they burnt their crops in protest and stopped production.
I read a bunch of articles that said Stalin killed about 20 million people. Wikipedia states that the Holodomor killed between 2.6 million to 10 million an incident regarding the people of Ukraine plus other attrocities. Many articles suggest that 20 million is a gross underestimate of what stalin really killed. In "Stalin a Portrait of a Monster" it is said he killed over 60 million. I personally think that is an exaggeration, it's really hard to know the true facts from propaganda though.

And if you think about it, Stalin didn't really kill more than Hitler did if you look at it in a different way. Stalin killed 9 million people in 30 years while Hitler killed 6 million people in 12 years. If Hitler would have been dictator as long as Stalin, then Hitler would probably have killed way more than Stalin ever did.
Hitler was responsible for more than 6 million deaths (40-60 million died in WWII). Not fair to blame all of WWII on Hitler, but he gets much the blame.
If Hitler wouldn't have attacked Poland, then all those 40-60 million people would have survived. So yes, I would say it's fair to blame a little bit on Hitler.
You can't be a hero and a tyrant, at least not in the sense that Stalin was a tyrant. Do you really it was Stalin who won WW2? The Russian in spite of him. In the early stages of the Nazi invasion, millions of Soviet troops were pointlessly mowed down or captured and sent to the concentration camps because Stalin refused to let them retreat. It was only when the Wehrmacht was at the gates of Moscow that Stalin finally handed control of the war to the generals. They won it and he took the credit.
It really saddens me that so many Russians are seemingly willfully ignorant about their history. There was just too much history to cover in too little screen time. It really needed to be a 10 hour mini-series.
Stalin's ascent to absolute power after Lenin's death from 1924-29 needs about 2 hours itself. As with the purges from 1934-38, and then World War 2.

@cuttock I love it how many people here dismiss the film as being terrible for no other reason then that its a made for tv film. I watched the film a few days ago and its really good for a tv film. The fact that its also one of the very few films about Stalin out there is also really overlooked. IMDB.com reviewers also shower the film with praise.

Robert Devual cannot portray the kind of energy that Stalin can. I'm sorry he's a good actor, but I think the role should have gone to someone more ethinic looking and rough around the edges.

Saw that Movie, it was sad. Man, anyone that could possibly have chance of taking him out was "disappeared" and anyone that could group together to fight him was destroyed in the name of the People. Then he starved and killed millions for grain that he sold, and not redistributed, to other nations for money to industrialize. The guy was a monster, with more hounds then sheep. But on a lighter side he brought us a reason to trudge upon socialism and an ingenious architecture.

Another film made for idiots, even the characters have nothing to do with real ones. Beria is full of hairs, Khruschov has nothing to do with real one, Durval basically lacks of facial expression, a too tall Lenin... If you want a good movie on Stalin, I recommend you Padenie Berlina or The inner circle.

His gulags were very nasty, and he killed over 3 times as many of his people than Hitler (<6million Hitler, and <20million Stalin) Stalin was very paranoid and ordered many people who hadn't committed any crime at all to be put to death. They were both very cruel leaders the main reason Stalin wanted to free the people from Hitler's ovens is because it would have looked good for his image so he can tell his followers how compassionate he is.

Stalin didn't want to anihilate an entire culture or religion, he just wanted to remain in power as long as he could, so it wasn't really necessary to "kill people randomly" or to do all that non-confirmed (yet, not denied) things many people claim he did. He just killed every body who was against his rule, who most of them were intellectuals, politicians and military because the average people was ignorant and believed the propaganda.

I read a bunch of articles that said Stalin killed about 20 million people. Wikipedia states that the Holodomor killed between 2.6 million to 10 million an incident regarding the people of Ukraine plus other attrocities. Many articles suggest that 20 million is a gross underestimate of what stalin really killed. In "Stalin a Portrait of a Monster" it is said he killed over 60 million. I personally think that is an exaggeration, it's really hard to know the true facts from propaganda though.

There is no such thing as "only" 600-800,000 killed.
6 would have been murder, let alone 600-800,000, though when you take the Holodomor into consideration, the number of Stalin's victims is a lot higher than that. It's sad and a little bit scary that Stalin's propaganda and brainwashing are so effective some six decades after his death.

Do I prefer capitalism to communism? Yes. But I also think that capitalism needs to be reigned in from time to time by a healthy dose of socialism.
In the aftermath of the war the UK voted in a Labour (socialist) government, because that was the only way to get the country back on its feet. As a result we fine tuned the welfare state and developed the National Health Service. But *Communism* invariably leads to dictatorship - there isn't a single example when it hasn't.

And if you think about it, Stalin didn't really kill more than Hitler did if you look at it in a different way. Stalin killed 9 million people in 30 years while Hitler killed 6 million people in 12 years. If Hitler would have been dictator as long as Stalin, then Hitler would probably have killed way more than Stalin ever did.

You can't be a hero and a tyrant, at least not in the sense that Stalin was a tyrant. Do you really it was Stalin who won WW2? The Russian in spite of him. In the early stages of the Nazi invasion, millions of Soviet troops were pointlessly mowed down or captured and sent to the concentration camps because Stalin refused to let them retreat. It was only when the Wehrmacht was at the gates of Moscow that Stalin finally handed control of the war to the generals. They won it and he took the credit.
