both these guys are pound for pound the best fighters the NHL has ever seen...
Rick Tocchet 6ft , 214lbs Wendal Clark 5'11 a, 200lbs ,,,,and they both fought the best fighters in the game and most likely ever..also Stan Jonathan should be mentioned ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,shout out to my fellow Scarborough Boy Rick Tocchet
clark smashed one of the flyers with an open ice check and tocchet jumped him. That's how this fight started. Too bad we couldn't see the entire sequence of events leading up to this.
clark was one of the hardest punchers ever in the nhl!!!! you pussies don't know what your talking about. once clark started throwing them, watch out baby...most of the time the other guy went down!!
I remember this fight and I wish they had let this video run a little longer because at the end of the fight, Tocchet gives Clark a little tap basically saying "good fight" and Clark gives a sort of head nod of respect. Gotta love hockey players. Anyway, these two guys were BOTH shorter than most enforcers. I think they were both 5'10''.
Close fight. Wished they fought again, at least two more times. This was only Clark second year I believe, probably only 20-21 years old. When Clark was in his mid 20's, 25-26 he was at his prime. Clark had a much harder punch during that time. I think he would of hurt Tocchet bad if they fought then in a rematch. It's too bad it never materialized.
tocchet with the win in this one. clark lost a lot more then what people think. clark like to get the jump on guys hardly ever faced them face to face and thats a fact.
@hal4sure mm i disagree with your comment as in a fight you should be ready to go no matter what there should be no "getting the jump" and he faced a lot of people head on i dont really know what your talking about.
@hal4sure people get this all wrong..........thats the way it was in the 80's man , if you didt come out swinging you were toast . this is an era where guys would on the regular headbutt each other when fighting ,,,dont hold some bullshit code up,,a fight is a fight period ,,,,where i am from you expect people to fight fair your brains will end up on the street
did I hear him say " tocchet was going after the guy that is supposed to be the best fighter in the business??? (0:13).....didn't know you could do play by play drunk!!
Guys, both are impact players no doubt. However, gotta give credit to Clark. He's only 5'10, 190lbs max, taking on guys much larger him. Let's see one of you pussies square off with the biggest toughest guys in the league at that size. Who can blame him for throwing his fists like a mad man. All heart to Clark.
"Unwritten rule" that's funny. How about Clark sitting on Bob Brooke (non-fighter) punching him in the face when the refs were not present.....any unwritten rule there?
Or, when Clark starts punching guys in the face before the opponent is aware they are going to fight. The fact that you think Clark is "brave" and Tocchet is "afraid" shows your knowledge. Stop embarrassing yourself PunChon....you clearly are Leaf-obsessed to make such idiotic comments.
I can't believe that more people don't see Clark hitting the majority of their opponents before they get their gloves off! He was NOTORIUS for it! He did it to McSorley, Neely, Probert, and almost everyone else! The only guy he didnt do it to was Mark Tinordi, and Mark beat him routinely! Hell, Clark even hit his own teammate Maguire in practice before he was set!
Don't get me wrong, Clark was a great player, but he was a dirty fighter. Try finding a fight where Wendel squares off cleanly!
Wendel was a good player and a great fighter....but it was dirty as hell the way he usually started the fights before his opponent had any clue they were going to scrap.
That's what people who aren't true hockey fans never get-that Wendel was a throw first fighter, and he never squared off clean! I'm a huge Bruins fan, and I love Cam Neely. There were 3 great power forwards of the era they played, and several very good ones. The great ones were Neely, Tocchet, and Clark. Neely had the best scoring touch, Clark and Neely were the most devastating hitters(as forwards), and Tocchet was the best fighter of the 3...but all 3 guys could do everything well!
I will agree that Clark started punching before his opponents, but to be fair I think that he put vasaline or something on his hands because those gloves used to just fly off in under 1 second.
...I don't know where you think you have ground to say Tinordi "routinely" beat Clark. It was a very good and competitive fight, and probably a draw. Punches were thrown on both sides. It was a back-and-forth brawl, with neither of them going down.
Clark lost on March 29th 1989. He did well early, but Tinordi took over and started hammering him.
You claim I keep bashing him when he was my 3rd favorite player in the league. I just don't think Toronto fans can take the truth. He had a reputation for punching people before they knew they were in a fight. I can name about 10 examples off the top of my head if you need help-Probert, Neely, McTavish, McSorley, Fetisov, Wilson, Savard, Bob Brooke, Brad McCrimmon, Lacroix, etc.
well we can agree to disagree. you won't change your opinion that he punched before making the opponent realise it was a fight, and I won't change where I stand by saying that he would just punch first to get the advantage.
regardless, he's truly one of a kind. there's really no other guy like him who could score, assist, hit, shoot and fight like him. every shift, he produced something.
What do you mean there were no players like him? Do you even watch hockey? Clark Gillies was a 6 time 30 goal scorer, a great hitter, and held the belt as heavyweight champ of the league. Tocchet and Clark were very comparable players, although I'd give Clark the edge at Body checking. Neely and Clark were very similar, although Cam was a much better scorer netting 50 three times. I'd give Clark the edge fighting over Cam and I'd call them the 2 best hitting forwards of their era.
How are we disagreeing? You just agreed that Clark would throw the first shot to gain an advantage. That was precisely my point, and you just conceded it to me!
yes, but you're saying it in the sense that it was cheap, when I say it in the sense that a fight is a fight, and when two men are shirt tugging and mouthing at each other, there's the brief look in the eye, and if the mouth or yes, even the eyes say that they're williing to fight, Wendel wouldn't wait for them. remember, in a fight, you gotta use everything you can to your advantage.
and having said that, there's really no point to continue this because neither of us will budge.
well yeah, he did. is this the point you're trying to get across? and so what if he would punch first? so what? good for him. he would get the advantage early.
I notice you keep replying as if you think you are adding to the conversation. You CONCEDED when you acknowledged my point that Clark had a reputation for throwing the first punch. That was my original point that you at first disagreed with, but miraculously have now conceded. Thanks for admitting you were wrong. I accept your surrender! LMAO
wow, so this whole time you're barking that he throws the first punch? so that was your only point? are you serious? so if ever you get into a fight, you will not punch first because it's cheap... gotcha!
Again, you continue to make a fool of yourself. You conceded Wendel always tried throwing the first punch to gain an advantage. I said that his reputation was so, which you conceded. I never saw Wendel once in his career square off cleanly the way I have already seen players like Georges Laraque and Milan Lucic do the majority of their fights. Nobody said throwing the first punch is cheap. However punching someone before they drop their gloves and stick IS cheap. Thanks for playing! LMAO
dude don't let this lying tool get to u....he goes by the name kidpokerleafsfan and systematically jumps into arguments he gets into with people as that alias and defends himself....just click on my sn and scroll down my comments and u will see a list of vids proving this.....as well as some of the many people that have caught on to this....i dunno whats worse, the fact that he's pretending to be canadian or the pic of the 16yr old shirltess boy he has in his profile for kidpokerleafsfan
i agree, but 80-90% of the time the person who lands the first punch wins the fight..... it is tactical to throw first. if its a cheap shot who cares, you still win?? its like saying a team that wins by scoring first is cheap????
You are comparing apples and oranges. A team that gets scored upon first isnt looking the other way when the ref drops the puck. Clark was tough and Im not trying to say he wasnt....but he had a leaguewide reputation for hitting people before they were set.
Just like in a bar fight, whoever lands first usually wins. So if I go around suckering guys in a bar and the bouncers come in and break it up, does that make me the toughest guy ever? lol hell no!
I agree and that was my point. Clark did it twice to Probert, but when they squared off cleanly, Wendel was hanging onto Probert's leg after getting pounded down to the ice!
Clark took on the toughest fighters in the league since he was a rookie... and beat them too. He could do it all: score, assist, hit, fight... he's the best. And yes, you fool, he was about 5'10", 190lbs, and he fucked with everyone. He's as brave as can be, and you're just a little Wendel hater. bye-bye
wow, 8 months later and you reply ... this signifies acknowledgment of defeat and cowardice ... you lose, sir, and you're Wendel hatred may continue however facts are facts. good day sir
replying saying that it is you who in fact loses as opposed to me is in no way a form of the slightest bit of flattery. i do apologize however to give you a great wake up call. now sit back down and enjoy some more Wendel Clark videos like a good boy.
@mcaris17 Videos where he gets his ass kicked by guys like Tocchet and Tinordi, who didnt have to jump people to win a fight? LMAO Sure will Booster! NEXT!
What this video doesnt show you is how Tocchet came right off the bench and charged at Clark, who had already been on the ice for his 40 second shift, This fight is overblown in Rick's favour, he was a great fighter but turned down Clark everytime for the rest of their career. And yes there is an "unwritten rule" about challenging a guy who's at the end of a shift and you just came off the bench.
Watch the fight without the volume and especially to not listen to those annoying bias commentators, this fight was a lot closer then u think. Id give it a draw.
"tocchet was worthless as a player".. 440 goals 512 assists... 2900 penalty minutes...and two stanley cups... You call that worthless?... his coaching skills are still to be determined... its not like he has a ton of talent to work with in tampa
Those guys were fast and furious...Tocchet could change hands without losing a beat. Wendy was a 100% righty....edge to Tocchet after Wendel proposed on one knee near the end.
Clark knocked out many guys with his left hand, do the research, Tocchet avoided the rematch for the rest of his career, I freshly remember a game in 1991 against Pittsburgh where Clark chased him all over the rink trying to get Tocchet to fight, he ran like a biatch, if you beat him once he would always come back and Tocchet pussied out on fighting Clark twice, this is FACT!
It was a close one. Tocchet may have the slightest edge because of his height and reach advantage. But to say Tocchet cleaned up Wendell is a gross exaggeration.
This was really a close fight, maybe a slight edge to Tocchet. But I think most of you get influenced by the announcers. Watch without the volume you'll see how close it really is.
lol get off the crack pipe you homer. I'm a Bruins fan, and these are 2 of my favorite players of all time, but Rick gets a clear win here as he dropped Clark in the middle of the fight.
You see him hammer punch Clark?

Clark knocked out many guys with his left hand, do the research, Tocchet avoided the rematch for the rest of his career, I freshly remember a game in 1991 against Pittsburgh where Clark chased him all over the rink trying to get Tocchet to fight, he ran like a biatch, if you beat him once he would always come back and Tocchet pussied out on fighting Clark twice, this is FACT!

I always hated Wendy. His timing for brutal hits was very good. His hard, elusive shot was better.

Ouch, Tocchet gave it to Wendel, in that scrap...

Clark went after Mark Howe of the Flyers and Tocchet came to his aid and he proceeded to wipe the ice with Clark's lifeless body.

It was a close one. Tocchet may have the slightest edge because of his height and reach advantage. But to say Tocchet cleaned up Wendell is a gross exaggeration.

When was Wendel ever the best fighter in hockey? I;m not saying he wasn't a great fighter, but he was never considered the best at any time.
