Way too dangerous in my opinion. If a chain breaks you'll have a deadly projectile shooting from your car. I would keep huge distance if I'd see such a thing driving in front of me.
@Engineer9736 The chains are designed to run safely up to speeds of 30MPH and if used correctly they have been tested extensively and will not break. The Rotogrip chain system is used worldwide and when used correctly it is the safest means of traction on ice and snow pack that is available today. Deploying the chains at high rates of speeds is the only way to break the chain links. The chains should be deployed and retracted at 10 MPH or Less.
Looks like it only works on plowed surfaces. Driving on unplowed roads with snow only a few inches deep or more would keep the chains from spinning enough to get under the tire. Which would be the case in most parking lots and loading docks where these trucks eventually have to go to.
@Grey390 This is true, when the snow is as deep as the chain wheel height, 4 inches the snow will prevent the centrifugal force from lifting the chains. This will affect how chains get under the tires. Automatic chains were not designed to function in deep snow, they were designed to give you traction on ice and snow pack. This is the level that Rotogrip automatic chains perform best.
Automatic chains only function correctly when the chain wheel location is centered on the drive tire. When the chain wheel is set up correctly the vehicle simply drives over the chain- this reduces the wear on the chain wheel and drive tire; this is one of the best features of RUD's automatic chain mounting. For adjustability, RUD uses a mounting tube which allows us to move the chain wheel forward, or back to locate the chain wheel perfectly.

This is a great idea. and it's so cool that it uses the tires themself to rotate the "chain fans". No other power source needed. Seems as easy as turning on the windshield wipers.
@prabakharpeddada: The RUD Rotogrip can be used on 3/4 ton pickups and up, including ambulances. There is not enough clearance for automatic snow chains to be used on cars and SUVs.

@JanJanych There not useless, they work very well, the OKC FD uses these and they never get stuck of run off the road. With a heavy truck it works but on your volvo wagon it may not.
@Rich606 if that saddens you, then you should consider yourself fortunate that you don't have anything else to make you sad. Also it's funny how you criticize their use of "Gets," when you made an error yourself. You put the comma and period BEFORE the quotation mark, You put "Gets you there", not "Get's you there". Should say, "Gets you there," not Get's you there." If you're going to criticize, please, do it properly.
When they are used on ice and the snow pack you will feel them under the tires but the noise that they produce is low. When you reach dry pavement the noise level will increase slightly.
The key to automatic chains working correctly is center of the chain wheel to center of the drive tire.
With Onspot there is little or no adjustment and the chain wheels are color coded because they will only work correctly in one direction. RUDs wheels are not color coded because it works in reverse as well as they do in forward, and at lower speeds then Onspot! If you have any questions or concerns about RUD ROTOGRIP chains please contact a RUD representative for the correct information.
As a technician, I can tell you that if ROTOGRIP ever comes out of adjustment it is not installed correctly. There are thousands of ROTOGRIP systems running from coast to coast, so your statement is incorrect. RUD, known world-wide for its leadership in chain technology, has also been doing automatic chains for 20 yrs and the quality of the chain wheels and the adjustability of ROTOGRIP allows you to keep the chain wheel in the center of the drive tire, resulting in less wear.
Rotogrip are just plain garbage, Rotogrip constantly come out of adjustment making it a hassle to maintain.
The company You want to go with is Onspot. They have been making automatic tire chains for over 20 years, there's absolutely no flaw with there product.

It looks like a simple but great solution. Too bad it's not suitable for most standard vehicles due to lack of clearance.

At that point the chains need to be retracted.
