  • Luckily the pilot was a former glider pilot. Other pilots who tried it in simulators all crashed it.

So, I reckon all pilots should have some flying time in gliders. It can just be until 2 or 3 solo flights. Flying a glider is not the same as flying an airplane.

  • Did he really said holy cow?

  • Nice work.

  • BTW its called a side slip

  • i was born on june 7th 1983 : ) so i was over month old

  • Damn permafrost layer must have thawed. Curse you global warming

  • Wonderful job -- thanks for the effort. Recommend to Karlamon9 to heed the correct comments and make the job perfect.

To slip in a flight simulator, you must be able to work the ailerons and rudder independently. A slip is used either to lose altitude or to perform a crosswind landing. The reason you lose altitude in a slip is you increase drag by exposing your fuselage area to the airstream. An advantage of a slip over flaps in losing altitude is you can quit slipping with little delay

  • fail. based on the reports the nose gear didn't retract fully

  • btw, the front landing gear is not all the way down

  • >>"accidentally fueled up 22,300 pounds instead of 22.30kg"

you clearly don't understand metrc system too. :)

  • @zzptichka That was a typo. Sorry about that.

  • What a pilot eh!! Good job on the video!

  • It's the fuel crew in Montreal, not Ottawa they had nothing to do with this...

  • great vid! but in the real indecent, weren't there kids bike riding the length of the runway?

  • @qantas737800 - Yeah. There were three kids out there riding their bikes, being chased down by this plane as it was skidding to a stop. I've always wondered why people try to "move forward" as fast as they can and don't "jump sideways" to get out of the way immediately.

  • They could have kept the glider in Canada but why our stupid neighbors get it?

  • @SuperGulfAir -- Not all of us Americans are stupid, although I would agree that the stupid do tend to move to California in droves. The conditions are SO bad there, I really don't understand why people continue to live there. And I agree with you. Never should the Gimli Glider been moved to California. That should have stayed in Canada for the Canadians to enjoy and Americans to go visit when they go on vacation to Canada. I never would have let that thing go. Too amazing a story!

  • You forgot to slip ;-) Nice landing and nice document.

  • best mayday episode eva

  • where is the ram air turbine?

  • @lakermangmx

bottom center, behind the landing gear

  • Comment removed

  • he performed a side slip and not a forward slip

  • Actually there was also 3 boys on bikes after the racing was done( this "run way" was a runway but then is became a race way then it went back to a runway) and they had to like pedal their asses off lol um they say that they were bored out of their mind and trying to figure something out to do , then here comes the plane and they were right in the middle of the planes path . thats more ofo the story ....... oh and this stoy was on a TV show called "Urban Legends" good vid ty

  • Actually, it was a Monreal-Ottawa-Edmonton route, not Montreal-Edmonton.

  • pretty impressive considering that after the accident, they put their bets pilots in simulaters and they couldnt land like that.

  • @24preacherboy

As they say in the military "put a well trained capable man in an imminent deadly situation and the best of him will come out"

  • @Zev121 I thought they said, "Don't ask, don't tell"

  • @acoti

the saddest part is someone died to protect the constitutional right to be dumb, coward, stupid and opinionated... just to mention a few...

  • @Zev121 You don't know me...for all you know I could have been one of those men or women out there fighting for our freedom. I'm not, but for all you knew right up to this point, I could have been. I must give you credit, however, for you did not lash out like most people would in this scenario.

On two side notes: The military does say what I stated earlier, and it was, for all intents and purposes, a joke.

  • The Aircraft in this accident, what repaired and put back into service and has recantly been retired.

  • I see the 2 kids!

  • The turbine doesnt stop turning while flying!

  • Awesome video! Its very much like the real thing, but what actually happened was the the nose landing gear did'nt retract but i know that when you retract all the wheels on flight sim, all of them come out. Anyway, what airport is that? is it Gimli?

  • @BlendWngBdy26 Yes, it is Gimli and it's open as an airport again.

  • @Karlamon9 Yea, just in case another canadian screws up the fuel conversion.

  • @24preacherboy

well, if you are american, I have bad news for you!!!

Continental airlines had a plane crash (all died) because of the same stupid mistake with fuel conversion.....and ran out of gas!!!

  • @BlendWngBdy26

what a stupid question!! the plane is called "Gimli Glider" Because of this!! ..don't you get it???????????

Because it landed in the GIMLI!! DUHHHHHHHHHH

  • Nice video!!!

  • good effort , but you should have done the side slip, that was the absolute pearl !

  • @YaBaDji he did do a side slip

  • They could have landed on the trans canada hwy.

  • @UpperCanada1812 Although that might have injured people, it's a good idea.

  • Cheers to the Captain!

  • Accually at 1:52 the maneuver is called a 'side slip'... I think...

  • If the nose gear was only halfway open... then it would've been more true to the real events.

  • They didnt glide as far as one plane though...but I think it was taken out of service afterwards. So these guys get credit, if only the victims of the Avianca flight had that luck...

  • They knew they where running out of fuel though.

  • true...

  • What??? it was repaired and returned to service until 2008. C-GAUN is the registration, look it up on the internet.

  • the pilot made the plane go on its side and then last moment he got pack on corce and then landed on the drag racing strip and yes there was a gard rail that stopped it

  • the nose wheel did not completely go down

  • one of the best vidzx! that Karl has made from the Air Disaster videos... : 10/10

  • nobody was killed i watched it on Nat geo

  • @TransportBoy you crazy LOL

  • @pipidores why

  • Just another reason to use a unique measurement system, that is named International System of Units. If you do not want to change, then this kind of things happen... not intended to Canada, but to the USA, Liberia and Myanmar... Above that, the crew of the plane were real heroes to safely landing the plane

  • nice show but the jet hit the gaurd rail to stop i didnt see any guard rail in your show

  • its a flight simulator, not an air crash simulator, (I'm just saying) this is probably the best simulation you can get, you also missed out the two kids cycling around the runway,(flight simulator 2004 doesn't provide them)

  • the landing strip is fake though there is no planes so there is no guard rail

  • that is air canada 143

  • Good job on that vid sir.

    5 stars

  • The Fornt landing gear didn't come down!!!

  • Thats the point!

  • ....and it stopped their ass cold from going off the runway and overtaking two kids on bikes.

And why did those stupid ass kids try to out run the airplane? They could have just taken paths adjacent to the runway??

They survived without a scratch, that's the main thing. Scared shitless..... but they survived.

  • thats not how you drag your rudder should go right and your wings should go left and push the plane down a little and the nose gear should not go up it was stuck and no flaps LOL!!!!!!!! but nice vid rated 5 stars

  • Was Captain Bob Pearson a member of Canada's Air Cadets?

  • Both he and his First Officer were Air Cadet Glider Pilots.

  • Thank you so much..... not doubting your word.... what is the origin for this information? Thanks Again!!

A friend of mine is a past Chairman of the Board of the ACL (Air Cadet League) of Canada and I suggested the ACL do a segment on their site about these magnificent airmen.

My own nephew is currently training on the CF-18 Hornet, and is / or will be the head instructor of the "Big Red 2".

If I was in charge of PR for the ACL, I'd promote their Air Cadet roots like gangbusters!

  • It's one of those 'A friend of a friend of mine' Situations. One of my Glider Instructors was an Instructor during their time in the ACGP.

  • Thanks Again! May there always be a thermal present when you need one....

Canada's "ROYAL CANADIAN AIR CADETS" are simply the best.

I was one (an air cadet) and I'm proud as all hell of my nephew - he was one too. He always had his head in the clouds..... now he does it a Mach with his hair on fire!! Go Capt. David.... !

The Snowbirds want him to try out for the team too. This came from the team's C.O.!

    Air Force MARCH PAST anyone!

  • FORWARD SLIP! and the rudder and ailerons are opposite. full opposite rudder and enough roll to keep directionally straight. ps. i fly gliders

  • Holy Cow the cockpit was "burried" into the ground

  • I have see this on air crash investegation the pilot was amazing and i like how you do it 5/5 :) great video i like it

  • THATS NOT HOW U DO A SLIDSLIP

  • The text, style of video is almost as same as the Episode from ACI called "Deadly Glide" which featured 767 Air Canada

  • also... the Gimli Glider did go back into commercial service, it only went to winnipeg to be repaired and for an investigation to be completed... it finally, as stated in this video retired and its final flight was AC7067 to the Mohave desert in California.

  • the first office did say that they needed to divert to winnipeg, and then, when they ran out of fuel and engine power, he told ATC that they lost both engines.

FS 2004 cannot accurately recreate all aspect of this flight including the nose gear not coming down all the way.

if the pilots didnt descend the airplane would have missed the landing strip, if you remember, they were too high and too fast on approach and thats why the Captain performed the side slip

  • should have set flaps to 20

  • You forgot so many aspects of the crash. Firstly, the first officer didn't say at first what was wrong with the plane. He just said he needed to land at Winnipeg. Secondly, the front gear didnt come out properly and didnt lock. Thirdly, the pilot didnt descend, the aircraft slowly descended due to the loss of both its engines. Finally, the plane was only brought back into service for investigation at Winnipeg. Watch the show mayday on DiscoveryChannel for more info if you live in Canada. NT THO!

  • I love the show Mayday. I wonder what type of simulator they use.

  • that's not how to do a side slip

  • u should know its hard on FS2004 to perform a side slip. im making the video soon aswell check out my channel for Air Accident videos.

  • Yeah, but it's just FS. To do a side-slip, you need to point the rudder one way, and move the horizontal stabilizers the opposite way.

  • a side-slip is opposing rudder to aelorons.. in this video the aircrat is performing an uncoordinated left turn, i.e. left bank and left rudder.. a side-slip would have involved left bank right rudder

  • Yeah, people try to argue that it's just a tall tale, but the most meaningful evidence points to the fact that it did indeed happen.

  • where u download this texture???

I find this texture so long but no result...

can i teach me how to download this texture?

    thank u

  • The Gimli Glider actually departed from Montreal Dorval Intl airport not Mirabel. Proud to say I have flown on that aircraft many times before it was retired. Amazing recreation!! 5 Stars!!

  • I saw this episode.. man it was awesome!!

  • great video!

  • comments:

*During decent into Gimli: it's not a forward slip, it's called a slideslip.

*Epilogue: They didn't depart from Ottawa, they had departed from Montréal.

  • Where do you get plane, Ive seen this on tv and have it on my PC, but I cant find a plane for it, any one no where I can get one?

  • GREAT video, where do u get the plane

  • I saw the Movie Free Fall Flight 174, It's Related to The Scenario

  • hey, d17 and lutherlex just spam.

  • Well, the Gimli Gilder was Air Canada Flight 143 and it was nicknamed, The Gimli Glider but after they land at Gimli Industrial Airport, the Airport at Gimli was now famous because of Air Canada Flight 143 landed for emergency.

  • in the side slip, the ailerons are supposed to go in one direction, and the rudder goes into the other. Not both going in the same direction. other than that, it was great!

  • No chance of fire, at least!

  • nice vid! although that flaps should have been set in the landing

  • well, in their situation, they didn't have the flaps.

  • they actually did. I'm not shore what its called but it has this fan thing that comes down from the belly of the aircraft and gives it some power. Some of that power goes to the flaps.

  • they did have set flaps to 20

  • The plane was still in service for almost 25 years?! It's unbelievable!!!

  • 22,30kg???? ;)

  • If I have the powers, then I will sentence all authors to laud reading of their written subtitles. They are impossible to be followed by normal humans!!!!

  • in the real crash, the front gear didn`t deploy

  • the nose gear did deploy, but drag kept it from locking into place

  • When you Landed, You had no flaps, In the real crash, There were flaps. Nice vid though! Great work

  • Good vid but the aircraft sound sucked. DEFAULT

  • yea i watched it on air crash investigation and the ppl converted the feul in pounds rather than kilos and the plane ended up gliding on a drag strip nearly killing 2 boys!!!!

    GREAT VID bro

    keep it up

    CHECH OUT MY CHANNEL PLZ!!!!!

    apakiboi

  • The front landing gear actually didn't go down all the way since it was lighter than the back landing gear. But, I guess that's kind of hard to do on a simulation.

  • u did a great job on thos please tell me where u got the vehicals from,?

  • haha good fake of the episode of air crash investegation.

  • awesome!did you get that from flightsim?

  • thats brilliant, i knwo how hard it must have been. good job.

  • Omg , dude i dont belive that the ATC said HOLY COW to them really, in something like that they are really seriuos , and they have o get the plane down safly not say the disgusting word HOLY COW , not talking it is discriminating the Catholics and not only.

  • AC143 slipped to the right no left

  • it should be 22300kg and not 22,30kg

  • I guessit was sideslp and not forwardslip not sure and no offence lol

  • It's a side slip

  • hey how do use the ruter cuse i cant figure out how

  • okay you're front wheel wasn't down before landing? i shut be. is it was the real gimli glider, and the gimli glider can only be performed by one man, and no one can do what he did not even in flight simulator

  • Great! the front nose wheel even collapsed! One Question, how did you preform a forward slip in fs2004?

  • 61 or 66.

  • lol 69 people

  • awesome re-creation. How do you record flight sim videos anyway?

  • Use Fraps.

  • learn how to side slip. wing down into wind, opposite rudder.

  • Thank you, I was going to chew him out for that.

  • I think u we're supposed to ment 23,000 kg:)

  • that was the best recreation i saw ;) 5/5

  • you are amazing at these videos

  • air crash investigation really has a lot of amazing and feared images of what had happened in the flight industry.

  • its called a side slip not a foward slip

  • Uh...where do you hear these things? A sideslip adds airspeed while maintaining the same heading. The forward slip, which Captain Pearson performed, increases the descent rate without adding airspeed. He certainly wasn't trying to add airspeed...

  • hmm i swear i heard them say he was going to perform a side slip on the mayday episodes i never heard about the foward slip

  • Exactly, ovechkin is better playing hockey than he is at being an airline pilot. He indeed do a side slip. Rudder right and ailerons left.

  • how do u deativate one moter and not the other and what fraps are u useing? reply

  • Best recreation yet.

  • great recreation, bravo

  • You need to "patch up" your spelling and grammer.

  • It wasn't Ottawa, it was Montreal....probably Mirabel.

  • i like cows

  • Saw this on Aircrash investigations, wonderful episode, and I nice re-creation :)

  • same

  • The forward landing gear collapsed because there was no power to lock it into place. The landing gear were deployed by gravity, but there was not enough airflow to properly deploy the forward gear. Normally an airliners power comes from it's engines, but in this case only a few systems were powered via batteries. The injuries sustained were not because of the crash landing, but because of the height of the tail above the landing strip when the slides were deployed.

  • Did you know that there were 10 injuries?

  • very nice video!!! good job!!! keep 'em coming!!!!

  • how did u break the front gear?nice video

  • I edited the aircraft cfg. file and changed all the nosegear values to 0.

  • taht;s smart wht about the main gear??

  • The main gear didn't collapse on landing.
