Did someone forget to mention that in sub-Saharan Africa the lifetime risk of maternal death is 1 in 16, for developed nations only 1 in 2,800. Sure, not too long ago before modern obstetrics & anesthesia, women were having natural childbirths with a greater than 50% change of dying. We now have the luxury of having "natural" childbirths with the backup of OB and anesthesia available in case things go terribly wrong. get your facts right people!
@dchiem Natural Births and Dying rates have NOTHING to do with one another. The reason we had high mortality rates with children was because of giving birth in unsanitary and non-sterile areas.
@arickbarsch: No, it is more than just unsanitary conditions. I don't think making areas where women can deliver more sanitary is the only thing that has made childbirth safer. There are numerous potential complications of childbirth that can lead to death. Postpartum hemorrhage being the most common. In the situation of a life-threatening bleed after delivery, the woman will need resuscitation, blood, etc. It's ridiculous to decry modern medicine as taking away from the "birth" experience.
@dchiem It's more about having medical interventions when you don't need them at all but modern society makes it seem necessary no matter what, and they're just explaining that.
I'd like to see these women be in a state of prolonged labor for 3 days without an epidural. Epidurals do not increase risk of C-section. The women who get epidurals are the ones who tend of have prolonged labor, which DOES increase changes of getting C-section.
they are not anti epidural they are pro natural, pro womans ability to give birth without drugs. It's horrible that male doctors dominate the medical industry and have succeeded thus far in making a natural event like giving birth a medical event. Women have been giving birth naturally for centuries upon centuries and now drug labors have become the norm. That is horrible!
